Briggs are good tuff engines if they are serviced or stored properly. When you get to checking the spark it will be interesting if it is electronic ignition or Magneto (with points/condenser). I lost track in the late 70s, early 80s and converted some mag to electronic in that span. Neat, due to the good fire and oil blow-by from wear not affecting the eliminated points.

I had my pool renovated by Pool Works and I would use them again. They do new builds as well as renovations. They are on the NW side of town and I am far north. Up here, Wise Pools and Texas Pools have been longtime solid companies, but there area dozens if not hundreds of newer companies that run the gamut so get recs as well as bids. Most will go anywhere in the area. I know you said you don't want to be talked out of saltwater but I am wondering why you are so committed to the idea. I used to want to switch, but I have heard from many sources that the saltwater equipment doesn't hold up in our humid weather. We were ready to switch over more than once, but we kept hearing the same thing -- even after waiting and thinking the equipment would get better. Seems the only thing that has changed over the last 15 years is that folks are cooling to saltwater pools in humid climates. The cells deteriorate in this weather and they are more prone to problems and expensive repairs than standard chlorinators. The advice now is to use a smaller amount of salt to soften your water but not to generate the chlorine for sanitizing. You do realize that you are still using chlorine to sanitize the pool -- you just have a cell that generates most of the chlorine from the salt? You will pay more to build it, maintain it and repair it and those who won't even try to question your choice are looking out for their wallet rather than your long term satisfaction. If you want it, there is someone who will sell it to you, but my repair guy, my neighbors and the supply shops around here all report the same thing -- it will probably be great for the first 2-3 years but will have more problems and expensive repairs down the road. I don't know anyone who has been happy with a home saltwater pool long term in this climate. There might be a reason reputable builders are questioning your preferences.

Isn't Sienna Plantation in the jurisdiction of Missouri City? If so, their permitting and inspections process is very long and somewhat arbitrary in nature. I just finished building one in Missouri City and it was problematic with the city at every step. They would make up requirements that were not published anywhere. I have built pools in a lot of places and never had so many silly requirements. They are nice folks at the city, but I doubt I would ever build there again. One thing these cities forget in their attempt to govern construction in their city is that it costs you the homeowner a lot more money to get a pool there than elsewhere. Pearland is fine...they have permitting and inspections but they publish their requirements and the inspectors do not stray from them. Anyway, if Sienna Plantation is in Missouri City, permits and inspections should have been obtained by your PB.

It's easy to say "Buy American" but how many of you would pay double for an item to do that? I do. All the time. A jeweler once admonished me to use local talent - otherwise someday when I needed something it wouldn't be there. I have taken this to heart. We're all responsible for how other people are treated. We're all responsible for the things we buy. Shamefully most of the electronics we use Coltan - which is (generally) obtained in deeply unethical ways requiring a price in life and blood that if most people knew about would look in askance at our throwaway culture of electronics. But for most other stuff you can generally find a way to not buy the thing that requires an other person live in misery. My avoidance of things made in China isn't born of racism. The Chinese are as capable of putting out an amazing work of art/carpet/tile/sink (or in this case plate) as anyone else in the world. I don't (currently) trust their business practices and I don't like the way their workers are treated. When you buy something from the US or Italy or France or Germany or someplace with actual labor laws you are (in part) paying for the fact that the man/woman who made it lives a pretty good life and has access to clean water. The factory where it was made does not throw out lead into the environment. I also don't buy carpets made in Pakistan or India because I don't think it is possible to buy carpets made there without taking part child slavery. If you can't afford the things you want in life without asking for someone else to suffer for them, maybe you should reevaluate what it is you want and what you actually need. Do you really think crack-addicted rednecks in American factories are more skilled than Chinese workers? If they're addicted to anything it's Oxy and Meth. Get your drug addictions straight. And you tell me: it's 2 AM, you're in some bigbox store because it's put all the other stores in the area out of business (and no sane proprietor would stay open to 2AM) and you need to buy a Thermos. They are both the same size, both will do the job, both are the same price. One is made in China - the other in the US. Which to you buy? If you use the fact that one was made in China and the other in the US - why? If you're saying that the "rednecks" do a worse job then I suppose you buy the one from China. Otherwise you already have your answer.
