Running rich?

01 Taurus, Vulcan motor.owned for 4 months. Ran ok till I got flashing CEL light. Felt a misfire too. Plug gap was huge. New plugs fixed miss. 1 month later, cel is back. Misfire. I put on new coil pack. Miss is gone. But now I get code for bank 1-2 rich condition. Motor runs fine. I clear code, it comes back daily. Well, for the last 2 days. Not like I drive a lot. Never had rich code issue on this car. What did I touch? Or is it just 1 in a long line of issues with this car?

You'll need to look at a good repair manual for this car to get an idea what might be amiss. I can only guess. The code might be associated with an oxygen sensor that has is sending a false code of "too rich". Most automotive systems will ignore an oxygen sensor if its signals are out of the ordinary and use a default setting. A default setting may be on the rich side.

Yep, flooding. Be sure to turn the fuel off just a few minutes before finishing so it empties the fuel bowl, at least until you get it fixed. The flooding carb could contaminate the oil. If I were you I would cut to the chase and put a new carb on it. Then you can tinker with the old one at your leisure, maybe rebuild it and put it away for later. Sounds like a bad float.

Well, I had a few minutes to check a few things over last night. Gotta love these things, engine shroud off, removed carb, float bowl....tools used, 1 screwdriver.. :-) So..float bowl was clean and crud-free, so signs of gunk in the needle valve, moves freely, etc. Cork float is all in one piece, and once the surface gas dried upp it doesn't seem saturated. The air vane moves freely, spring not broken. Throttle is held wide open, vane will close throttle, spring back to wide open, seems fine. I blew through the ports I could with the carb off....did NOT touch mixture screw (I assume it's the brass one sticking straight up behind the throttle through-shaft?) The mixture screw has not been touched at all (as long as I've had the mower, and it worked well since I've had it). Exhaust port is clear. Pulled the plug out, cleaned it up, a fair amount of wet sludge (from running so rich)..cleaned it up like new, reinstalled. So, that all checks out.....put everything back together, same issue. It's running rich to the point that you can tell it's sputtering when you move the air vane...it should rev up but it sputters instead, like it's way too rich. It ran a few minutes while I tried each direction on the click wheel (it changes the idle speed but it remains rich and doesn't want to rev up...sputters instead), and it left a big oily spot on the lawn under the exhaust port....so..yeah, rich... Also, it's spitting gas out the intake. Not a huge amount, but enough that it gets the air filter wet, and will fire drops into your eyes if you stick your head down there with the air filter off. LOL I didn't fiddle with the mixture screw. (Any time I fiddled with carb mixtures in the past ended with a trip to the small engine shop to have them fix what I screwed up.) If someone can confirm how many turns from bottom it should be, I'll pull it out in case there's a piece of dirt or something in it... As for the adjustment..it 'should' be good..it was never changed... So...recapping::: rich, will idle not too bad, but as soon as you cut any grass it just slows right down and stalls. Will not rev up any significant amount when moving the air vane..it wants to but just loads up with fuel and sputters instead. The issue came on slowly over 2-3 mowing sessions..it wasn't there all of a sudden...it came on slowly and got worse and worse over time. Feel free to toss the hints at me....thanks in advance!!

I think the pusher was the 22270. It is the only Lawn-Boy that has had the GSV190. Actually, the Toro 22156 deck looks like the Lawn-Boy because the Lawn-Boy came first. As I said, the 22156 Toro is the same - same deck casting, engine, wheels, just painted red and white. It was a confusing time - Toro was phasing out Lawn-Boy but LB had come out with an aluminum-deck 'Insight' with Honda GCV160 engine (10797). I guess they decided to use that as a base and make the commercial model with the GSV190 to see if it sold. It was $1000. Whatever, Toro decided in 2008 to re-brand it to Toro. As far as I know, those are still the only two mowers to have that engine, but admittedly I haven't searched all the brands for it in some time. I know I'm very happy that I found mine in April, 2008 at Wise Equipment for $795. It's a full-commercial mower and the wheels have replaceable tires and sealed bearings. The engine has an iron cylinder sleeve, HD crank with ball-bearing mains, larger gas tank and cast aluminum cam cover. For the average homeowner it's pretty much a lifetime mower. here's mine along with my LB 10684 'Insight'.

I would first suspect the carb is still gummed up. Get it running and raise the throttle and spary carb. cleaner directly into the carb venturi. It will only take about 1 or 2 second blast and the engine will lug down, let it gain rpms and do it again and again. I would also try to find the bowl vent and spray some carb. cleaner down that so it gets pulled through the carb. some. As for the valves I don't know if it a overhead valve engine or a flat head. If it overhead valve engine check the lash adjustment. if its a flat head remove the head and decarbonize the comb chamber or chambers.

0172-0175, bank 1 and bank 2 rich. i dont know if there is a sensor in each exhaust manifold AND a 3rd sensor after y-pipe? i only had initial misfire issue 3 months ago with the worn plugs. car drove fine till last week and the coil issue. i have not changed the plug wires. perhaps the bad coil was caused by worn plugs which also factored into the questionable plug wires?

Mass Air Flow sensor. Check the air filter and if it is a type that uses oil (K&N for example) change it our to one that doesn't use oil. Clean the MAF sensor.

Vacuum leak. Check all of the vacuum hoses and the PCV.

Fuel pressure. Lines (leaks), pump, regulator and pressure at the rails.

I thought vac leak usually results in lean condition? I cleaned maf. I can drive 30miles, no cel, than I idle and I get code. It's usually 1 current code, 1 history code. Idle is hi vac condition. Which should show up as lean issue.

i put some e85 in car, its flex fuel car, and code is gone. tried varying blends, e40, e60, and so on. am back to e10 now and code has not come back. found out the fuel blend sensor is $450 dollars. whew. glad i did not buy it. car does not have fuel pressure regulator. it varies pressure by sensing blend and varying fuel pump speed. it does have a fuel pressure sensor though.
