Tahoe Daytime Running Lights..

Just wondering if anyone is experiencing a similar problem with the running lights on Tahoes, Suburban or similar models. Once or twice a year, a light on one side or the another burns out on our 2000 Tahoe. We notice this sometimes on other Tahoes we pass on the road. I think Chevrolet must be making a small fortune on consumers who need to replace the bulb. Curious if this is a widespread problem. Complaints to the dealer have fallen on deaf ears. Will have to complain to the higher ups and see what happens.

I have a new Chevy Colorado Pickup with daytimes that are a orange/yellow color, I think, I haven't seen one coming at me and I see only a reflection of mine. What are on the Tahoe?

If the Tahoe has a similar color running light, the problem may also appear in the Colorado. If so, I'll join in on the complaint.

I do see a lot of the daytime running lights burned out on the full-size Chevy trucks as well as the big SUVs that are built on the full-size truck platform. Maybe the lights are mounted in a way that exposes them to excessive vibration. Can you get an aftermarket bulb rather than one from the dealer? If you know the bulb number, the local auto parts store can check for it if it's not on the shelf. You may want to have them see if there is a longer life replacement bulb available.

I did that one year with transplants that I sold. It worked great. There was a very wet period when they seemed to be struggling and sickly, but they bounced back great. I did move them to 4-inch pots early on in their lives (the cell packs dry out very quickly outdoors in the sun and wind) and once they were well hardened off I began to leave them outside whenever the temperatures forecast said it would be above 47 or so. They'll be squat, strong, stocky seedlings if things go right -- much less leggy than seedlings grown indoors under lights.

Just got back from a short survey after T-storm last night - some broken branches but low and just a couple plants next to each other, I really think it's a rabbit or rodent of some kind b/c they were low branches. Tied up some more tomato plants (going crazy with foliage, maybe it IS too much N!) and picked some green beans. Still no ripe tomatoes but I've got pods (green ones)! Good-sized Hinkelhatz on more than 1 plant, some saved seed I hope are Hot Portugals (may be cross so who knows), and definitely some of those mini-sweets though the biggest one is looking almost bhut-ish so it will be interesting to taste. Flower buds now on Aji Limon and flowers ready to open on Alma Paprika. But last night's low was 56. Will be warming up this week so we should stay in the 60's overnight and 80's during the day so I hope everything (not just peppers, my cukes and melons are behind too) starts producing. I just seeded some more summer squash in the tunnel b/c the SVB is getting my zukes and I've only been picking them for a week. Funds are low (unscheduled brake repairs on truck this weekend) but I've got to get some plastic - even if it's cheap construction grade and not greenhouse grade stuff, just needs to last a couple of months this year. Mike - I was planning on selling at the East Granby market where I was last year. Maybe next week? Don't have enough to bring right now and it's $20/week plus gas money. I hope I can at least hit the last 6 weeks of market from mid-Aug to Oct 1, if the tomatoes ever start ripening.

aside from a/c running a lot..are there other issues? comfort issues? high relative humidity? high utility costs? it isn't a bad thing for the unit to run a lot, esp in a hot humid climate. long runtimes will allow the unit to dehumidify which doesn't happen when unit runs for short times off and on (short cycling) long runtimes actually cost you less utility wise running is cheap, it is start up that spikes elec usage. are your bills high? even with foam inside of concrete block..there is still a sizeable amount of the block that is just masonary. concrete block has little R-value. so if the block is 18" long then only 14-15" of it has foam insulation. the concrete that isn't insulated allows the heat to transfer through the block. this de-rates the R-value of the foam. the concrete block doesn't have a thermal barrier to stop heat/cold absorption. ideally between concrete block & stucco/plaster there would have been 1" foam sheathing. this is probably not the case in your wall structure. low-e windows should be reflecting heat back out.. but what type of frame do the windows have? metal will conduct heat, vinyl doesn't. if the low e glass is surrounded by a metal frame..it is the same as the walls..heat gain is through frames & it de-rates the performance of the low e glass. suggestions to block the heat?? plantation shutters for windows (if frames are metal) free standing shading...think of antibellum homes with shutters on porch..pergolas..awnings for west side of house.. you say that a/c has been checked out & all is fine..but did this include checking ducts for leakage? you could be losing 30% of conditioned air into attic via duct leakage. the lighter the roof...the cooler the attic. but what insulation do you have in the attic & are ducts in the attic (although I assume they are)?? is this your first summer in the house? what if any comfort issues do you have? size of house? size of hvac system? thats my 20 questions. post back & we will go from there. best of luck.

Help with my kitchen lighting plan

Here is our current (and, I think, final) kitchen plan. The kitchen is 13'x13' and has 9' ceilings. Our house is a simple sort of Victorian, circa 1918, give or take a year or two. I would really prefer that there be no recessed lights. There is going to be a small table or island somewhere in the center of the room, though I'm not sure of the exact placement. I'm figuring on under-cabinet lights under the cabinets on the right side of the photo, halogen lights in the range hood, a pendant over the sink, and maybe a simple chandelier in the center of the room. The windows over the sink are 5' wide and nearly 3' tall, and let in lots of light during the daytime. Right now, the kitchen is lit by two fluorescent shop fixtures, each of which take two 40 watt bulbs. One fixture is over the cabinet run on the right, one on the left. And that's plenty of light for me. I don't like bright light. I figured that I could either get a 5-light chandelier that takes 100-watt bulbs, which would, in and of itself, be more light than I have now. If it's not too big, I could even get a nine-light chandelier. Anyway, what do you all think? I'm just starting to think about all this, and am very open to changing what I've thought of so far. Jerry_NJ - Yes - mine are those orange/yellow lights too. I guess they just aren't built to last.

Cowboyind - it would be interesting to see if the aftermarket bulb would work. I'll have to bring up the point about the excess vibration when I give Chevy a call to complain. Probably one of those annoying design flaws they can't figure out.

I'll post when I hear some feedback. Thanks for the imput.

You can use a 4114 instead of a 3157 bulb (your owner's manual may call for a 3157). The 4114 bulb has a 4000-hour life, compared to (I think) 400 hours for the 3157. The 4114 is apparently a long-life, DRL-use replacement for the 3157.

The 3157 should be available anywhere for a couple of bucks if you want to continue using it..I'm not sure about the 4114. It might be a dealer-only bulb.

I guess the daytime running lights stay on full time when driving, I see all these parts for your daytime running lamp system (sensor,diode,module and relay) But try replacing the bulbs first because since they run full time while you drive chances are the bulbs just burnt out. Or could be a problem with the switch or the wirings. If you have no idea about it, you are free to call for a shop that could handle Chevrolet repair. There are lots of them on the high street
