Is there a manual?

The hood latch on our GMC pickup barely works to get the hood open. It appears that the spring mechanism on the end of the cable is shot and I will need to replace the cable.

Is there a manual that would show me how to remove the inner trim panels to get to the hood release lever so I can replace the cable?

At the auto parts stores there are many cheap manuals(Haynes, Chilton) available, these are of limited value.
Then a man can also go to the local library and do research.
I have found the GM Helms manuals to be quite good, they probably cost about $100 now.
Saving money also costs money..

If you plan on doing these types of repairs yourself, then IMHO there is no substitutue for the offical GM service/body manuals (the same references provided to the dealers.)

Another option is to find a forum dedicated to GM trucks like yours and post your question there.

I can imagine that being in any jobber biz you're eventually going to get shopped after quoting a job. In my business, we take that risk by submitting our best ideas on multimillion dollar public works projects. They may like your idea but not your price, and you spend tens, maybe hundreds of thousands in the pursuit over multiple years. Think that's just a lack of ethics that pops up across the business community. Energyrater- I've been participating in a discussion on FH's Breaktime forum. Someone putting in vinyl windows where the mfr instructions said not to foam them in. I was shocked by the number of folks who agreed that you should follow the directions and use fiberglass. I can't imagine putting windows in and not using the window/door poly foam to seal them in. dallasbill- the only thing that you'd need to wing it on is the ACH. If the house remodel is in progress, you won't really know how leaky it's going to end up. We did a blower door test before construction and then based the sizing on an estimate of how leaky it'd be after doing lots of improvements. Still have work on weatherstripping old windows/doors to do. I'd intended to get it tested again afterward, but we'll see if that actually happens. yoyoma- ideally you want to test the new system with a "duct blaster" test to see how well sealed up the ductwork is. Not as big a deal if it's all w/in the conditioned space, but most of the time it isn't. A well-installed new system will leak .05 cfm/sq ft of conditioned space. that is interesting dadoes. I did not think any of the current models would allow the user to add water in that manner beyond what I have on my SQ (holding the reset button), pre-2018 of course. I like having that flexibility, but it is kind of frustrating having to dash into the LR when the washer is on rinse to hold the reset knob when I want the extra water because I have tub filled to natural capacity. You once told me about the adjustment I could do, but I did not want the corresponding lower levels being affected.

I told the person reviewing our permit, and he said that I would have to provide manual J and S calculations. I am not sure a free online calculation will be acceptable for the code official. These free calculators usually don't conform to the Manual J requirements. You can get the homeowner's version of HVAC-Calc for $49. Here is the link: HVAC Calc You can treat the basement as it's own space. You don't need to calculate the whole house. The cooling load will be very small. I expect the heating load to also be small. The basement is mostly underground and well insulated, and it's comfortable year round even on the coldest and hottest days. I had someone check the capacity of the HVAC, and he said there's not enough to handle the extra space. I am skeptical the person who told you this information did anything to verify there is not sufficient heating capacity to heat the basement. Installing a mini split would be overkill in my opinion. I was originally going to use baseboard heating, but it required 32 total feet of baseboard heaters. How did you calculate the 32 feet of baseboard heating? I assume this electric heating which would be fine for your situation in my opinion. My recommendation would be to install electric baseboard wired to 240 V. You can buy an 8 foot 240 V baseboard heater for about $129 in Home Depot. The specification sheet says it will put out 8530 BTUs when wired on a 15 amp circuit. I think one of these should would be sufficient. You can buy two small units and put them on opposite sides of the space.

If you have a library card, phone as ask your library if they subscribe to any on-line auto repair guides. If they do, you may be able to access (by internet connection) and print pages from a decent repair manual. At the very least, you can view the pages.

Some libraries also have the print version of Mitchell's manuals in the reference section.

Is the release cable corroded or close to failing? Or, is the latch mechanism not releasing properly? My problem was the latch mechanism, not the cable, and after working grease into it, which took some time with a small brush and some tools to manually actuate/move the mechanism, my latch freed up considerably and now the hood pops right up. Just a suggestion to look into.

I do have the '94 Chevy/GMC factory manuals if I can be of help.

Go to Alldata website (Google ALLDATA) and subscribe for your particular vehicle the data base is amazing and I have found it to be well worth the $24.95 cost and is good for a year, you can download and print whatever you wish for your vehicle. A lot of times there will be a factory TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) that exactly spells out problem areas such as this and gives detailed drawings and alternative part numbers for the recommended replacement parts that will cure the problem, very useful!

I very much appreciate the different responses that I received. I don't think I will spend the $100 but I will follow up on corralling a couple of different manual options (checking library (our library doesn't have online material options) and maybe checking with the pickup forum that was suggested. I received a nice scan of manual pages that are close to what I am dealing with from a forum member and I am appreciative of that. Thank you all.

Some really good advice from formulaross.
And this info may not be "in the book"..
After determining that the cable is good, I would loosen the hood catch a little. If it was too tight, there would be too much pressure on the release.....
