2004 Madza Tribute Catalytic converters

My daughters 2004 Tribute would not accelerate and brakes were not good. Brought it into the mechanic and he said it needs $3800.00 worth of Catalytic coverter work. How can it be that much. Is he ripping her off?

    Uh, yeah.
    I just did a Bing for catalytic converters for a 2004 Mazda Tribute and the prices were all under $500. You can get the pair for a V6 from Amazon for $499. The 4 cylinder cats cost even less.

    Seems like a lot for what's just a Ford Escape with a Mazda tag on it
