new oil filters

my 2010 camry has a plastic oil filter housing. you change the filter element. any opinions on why they moved away from the traditional throw away metal canisters? good bad or no big deal? i did have to dig up a 64 mm socket though. i have a 65mm one and it slips slightly.

I don't know their reasoning, but it may have been to align that part with common oil filters in Japan. Honda motorcycles and other Japanese makes of motorcycles use a metal can with a replaceable filter element. That type has been used for at least since 1970 on 'cycles.

Both types filter well. The cartridge type is messier to change, but has the advantage of providing a look inside the filter can to get a view of what has been collecting.

I prefer the metal can over a plastic one.

In Japan, a number of engine design features were first tried on motorcycle engines before transferring to automotive engines. For example, 4 valves per cylinder first appeared in a motorcycle enigne. Yahama went as far to make a 5 valve cylinder and then settled on 4 valves. The problem of designing machinery to actuate multivalve per cylinder engines was worked out on a motorcycle engine.

my oil filter socket wrenches always seem to slip. the fact that the camry has a plastic housing is cause for concern. the cheap stamped steel sockets are tapered so they are loose to begin with. the dealer wanted $59 for a 64mm socket. and $50 for a new plastic filter housing. its easy enough to find a 65mm socket but harder to find a 64mm socket. they are online of course.

Lights don't work unless the engine is running! As mentioned, check the fuse. The crank circuit in that engine consists of the ignition switch, the brake/clutch switch, the attachment switch and the starter solenoid. There should be 12V at the B(attery) terminal of the ign. switch. When in the crank position, the S(tart) terminal of that switch receives 12V which then goes to the brake/clutch switch. The pedal must be DOWN to close those contacts. The 12V then goes to the attachment switch, which must be OFF to make contact. The 12V then goes to a small terminal on the starter solenoid, which energizes it and the engine should crank. The wire should be WHITE for that entire circuit. For an initial test, jump 12V directly to the small terminal (WHITE wire) on the starter solenoid. IF the engine cranks, the solenoid is good. Also, when you turn the Ign. switch to ON, you should hear the fuel solenoid click. IF you don't, I'd suspect the fuse.

What Bill said was my first thought too - wrong or faulty filter. Sometimes in vehicles, the old gasket sticks to the engine and when the new filter is installed over it, a catastrophic leak ensues. Don't know if this is possible with a tractor engine but the first place to look is the filter. It is possible that the correct filter properly installed could fix it, along with a new air filter (if it has a paper filter) or cleaning of a foam filter. Oil probably got to the filter, carburetor and muffler, along with the cylinder(s). If that's the case, the oil will have locked up the engine, being incompressible. Then you have to remove the spark plug(s) and spin the engine to blow it out. Once started, the engine will smoke heavily until the oil is burned out of it along with the carburetor and muffler. If all this goes well, the last thing would be a good cleaning of the whole affected area with a spray engine cleaner and hose it off. That's the best case - the other cases probably involve engine replacement. A hydraulically-locked engine will bend a connecting rod right away or send part of one through the block. Here's hoping its just a filter problem with no internal damage.

Just a follow-up to my original posts. I called the Deere dealer after not hearing from him for a week. He still doesn't know how much it will cost to fix and whether he can do it. He says the water pump and cam are shot which is not surprising at 1400 hours (especially with plastic cam parts) but he also says the crank shaft is shot which sound dubious. He said he would call me back when he knew, but when I called him back to ask how much a new tractor was, his voice brightened considerably and he had the sales rep on the phone with me in 2 minutes. Given the chimera that will result from cobbled parts, we'll probably purchase a new x720. Thanks mownie 7, I believe you had it right in that the water pump was worn and potentially leaking into the engine (I did need to top off the coolant from time to time). Who would suspect that a water pump could cause the entire engine to go (if the dealer is telling the truth). Also, a water pump failure would cause the temp gauge to rise while the engine continued to run. I still think crank shaft replacement is dubious, but he has me over a barrel and clearly wants to sell a new machine. Ultimately, I had 11 exceptional years of service from this machine. I worked it hard and it never complained. I'm still a Deere fan in spite of NYC service deficiencies.

Last week while out of town, in a one hour time span, my display on the laptop went out, my watchband on my favorite watch broke and I swallowed a gold crown. Fortunately, was able to limp by with cheap monitor from Walmart. Walmart also had my favorite watch (I got the last one they had). Bad news.... when you swallow a crown, it is not covered by anytype of insurance (should have had the wife punch me before I went to the dentist, that way I could say it was knocked out) and since I was out of town, I was not really able to look for it. Glad things happen in threes, and like Rusty, I played guitar with my buddies for 3 hours last night which always makes things better.

You should be able to find a socket at Sears for less than $50. Buy the 6 point, and not 12 point socket for best grip. Buy the Craftsman brand.

Other places where you may find suitable sockets are Autozone, NAPA, and Advance Auto Parts. NAPA may be pricery than the others. The Snap-on brand is good quality but with top price too.

If you are having trouble getting oil filters off, it may be those were put on too tight. Follow the tightening instructions on the filter carton or service manual.

For most spin-on filters, after the seal makes contact and gives a slight resistance, tighten another 1/2 to 3/4 turn. The new gasket swells upon contact with hot oil and further tightens the seal. A can with replaceable cartridge and center bolt will be different and may need a bit more tightening, but it too can be over tightened.

The torque on the cartridge style filters is generally stamped right in the filter cap. Typically it will be listed as 25N/M or about 18ft/lbs.

There are a number of reasons that the change to cartridges is being made. It reduces the oil that gets put into the garbage dumps because they are easier to drain, and many simply get incinerated. Plus we aren't throwing away a metal can with each filter, meaning less waste.

It also allows the auto manufacturers to have control over bypass valve opening pressures, and anti-drain back characteristics for quicker oil flow on cold starts.

it does use 0w-20 oil so i assume that flows pretty well when cold.
