About how much to replace A/C compressor?

My daughter-in-law's Crown Vic needed a new A/C compressor when they bought it a couple of years ago. The car was used, in great shape otherwise. The seller paid for the A/C repair, and all was well until this summer, when the compressor failed.

It seems like too much of a coincidence that two compressors would fail, but the second one was an aftermarket part, so maybe that's the explanation.

In any case, I hate to see my daughter-in-law and their baby driving around in hot car. The temp has been brutal lately. Does anyone have an idea of how much a repair like this would cost?

The best place to ask is your local repair shop, one that is certified to handle and dispose of refrigerants.

Depending on the type of failure, the entire sysem may Need to be flushed to rid it of any debris. Little pieces of stuff can ruin a compressor.

If you do not know the history of the repair, that 'after market' compressor may have been a usesd one from a salvage yard. It could also have been a rebuilt or remanufactured unit. A rebuilt is that has been refurbished by replaceing the obvious failed parts to make it work again. A re-manufactured unit has been taken apart and all parts worn out of specifiaction replaced. Questionalble bearings and seals are replaced. A re-manufactured unit, on the average, is better than a rebuilt one. However, both will contain used parts and may not have the same life as a new one.

any shop owner could offer up their price here. its info. but we do not know what the shops in your area charge. and ALL the parts that may need to be changed. that can affect price. comp is 300. install is 400. so 700-800 would not surprise me. nor would 1000.

I think there is a refrigerant leak somewhere in your AC system. When the refrigerant pressure falls below a certain value, the expansion valve/control will not energize the compressor clutch. This leak could be anywhere. Often, its a seal leak on the compressor, but since this was changed out twice, the leak must be somewhere else (assuming good connections were made for the changed parts).

Yea gotta watch that lol. There is another mini split guy who likes to revive these dead threads. I look at the date first most of the time just to make sure I am not commenting on something that was probably resolved in the last decade.

There are a few points to consider. You save some money on labor by changing out all the equipment at the same time. If you change the furnaces later, then you may have to disconnect the coils from the furnace. This adds additional labor and refrigerant charges. Depending on how many years it is from now, you may not be able to find an AHRI approved match with the new furnace and the condensers you are putting in now. If you keep the current furnaces then you are restricted to getting single stage AC condensers. A 2-stage condenser will require a variable speed furnace. Finally some manufacturers offer better rebates when you purchase the furnace and AC at the same time. In addition if you move up to 95%+ efficiency furnace you may qualify for a local utility rebate. The sum of these additional rebates help offset the cost of the furnaces.

Wow! I am so glad I found this thread. I was just quoted $1100 to replace the compressor in my Trane unit outside at ground level. He said the compressor was under warranty, but the filters, freon and labor are $1100. I knew that sounded high so I told him I would think about it and get back to him. Can anyone tell me if his diagnosis was valid: The unit is cooling but not very well. The freon is full. He hooked up his gauges, closed the liquid line valves and found the pressure would not drop below 30 lbs. He says that indicates the seals in the compressor are leaking internally. The normal pressures were: Liquid: 195-200 lbs. Sug: 95-100 lbs. Does this sound legit? He said the pressure should have gone down near 0 instead of hanging at 30. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
