Front bearings

If I need front bearings is it a god idea to wait until my next brake job? I'd hate to do them now and in a year a need new ones because I know I'm gonna need new rotors next brake job I do.

Hi Tim..

What kind of car? What kind of bearings does it have? Are they the adjustable cones such as the one's a rear wheel drive car (or light truck) has had since cars were first made? Are they a hub bearing that is pressed into the knuckle? Are they a hub assembly that bolts to the knuckle? Does the vehicle have Anti-lock brakes? Are you having a problem with the bearings and/or the brakes right now?

It is on a 02 mazda B2300 2WD. (Same as Ranger). The front left seems to have a little bit of play when I grab the tire and move it. No play in the ball joints or anything. There is nothing wrong with the brakes right now, but it'll need new rotors next time I do the brakes, maybe 6 months to a year from now. I put 1200 kms on it a week.

I don't think i have ever heard of something failing from too much chassis grease. Too much engine oil, or an over-filled transmission, but not chassis grease. When it is full of grease, it will probably ooze out! If you don't think the things are getting enough grease-then take them apart, stuff the cavities full of grease, and put it all back together! Automobile wheel bearings, to wit, turn at high speeds. Tractor bearings don't turn fast enough to heat up if not enough grease. So, squirt a bunch in there, and try it. If you see smoke coming out of the bearing, you didn't stuff enough in it. now, last month, i had to replace both spindle assemblies on a Craftsman tractor, because nobody ever greased them and they wore half-way thru the axle shafts and the vertical parts, too. When i jacked it up, i thought the wheels were going to fall off by themselves!

I have a troy built horse sr. no. 442047. I noticed the transmission drive shaft lattrel motion was moving back and forward probably as much as an inch, as I moved from forward to reverse. This is far more than shimming could account for. The only other factor determining shaft latteral motion that I see would be the placement of the front inner bearing cone on the shaft. On removing the shaft I mesured the distance from the sholder just behind the inner cone to the rear of same as 9/32. This inner race was not loose on the shaft but may have slipped. Does anyone know the distance from eather the shaft sholder or the front end of the shaft to the bearing. Baring that where might such info be obtained. Thanks for any knowlege you would be willing to share.

I just replaced the wheel bearings in my LX178, I guess they are only good for about 14-15 years : ( Hope I this set lasts as long. It is a very cheap upgrade and I would suggest anyone with bushings that plans on keeping their tractor for more than 2-3 years throw a set on. I also must admit that I get a warm fuzzy by having greasable bearings and prefer them to sealed.

If you "hammered" the old bearings out to remove them and they went crooked you may have damaged the bore. Always "press out" a bearing and "press in" the bearing only press on the fitted race (as mowie describes) and it takes "very little" grease. At this point I would take the wheels and bearings (old and new) to the dealer that sold you the bearings, if every thing is OK they will probably press the new bearings in for you (very little charge), if something is now damaged they will supply whith new (and that could be a charge). A little play in the bearings, and this is a learned feel BTW is normal, and not an indication that they need serviced. You have to be careful when adjusting them that you do not overtighten them. So in short, they are the adjustable cone type bearings that we have had for decades. If 4WD, the adjustment nut and retainer is different and a PITA, but again very serviceable as long as they haven't been damaged.
