Where is my Fuel Pump Relay Located?

Can someone tell me where the fuel pump relay is located on a '92 Pontiac Grand Am with a 3.3 liter (V-6) engine? I know the car has one because replacement relays are sold in the part stores, but none of the employees can tell me where it is on the car.Thanks.

A repair manual could be very helpful.

The fuel pump relay could be in a veriety of places. One popular place for relays is in the power control panel/box under the hood. Pop the lid open and look. It will have fuses and relays. On many car models, the relays are labeled, if not on the panel itself, maybe on a label in the lid of the box.

Because of your location and relatively mild winters, I would recommend a split system. High eff heat pump-minimum 15 SEER with backup nat gas furnace-2 stage var speed 80% efficient. How would you describe the insulation properties of your older home? You could leave the baseboard electric heat in place as a backup or have it removed all together. Ductwork system should have a comprehensive evaluation as to size, insulation properties, adequate return, leak test, etc. Average winter temp for your location is around 40 degrees. IMO

There are two balance points, temperature and economic. A lot of these calculations depend first on an accurate Man J calculation which is rare and the software necessary to produce each of these reports. Of course you must have accurate rates and efficiency. Most dealers don't know how to do this or have the software and time to produce these calculations. But it is available. Frankly I think good dealers should be able to provide this at a reasonable cost with the amount deducted from the cost of an installed system. All these manufacterer residential experts on staff at the respective distributors can do these reports. This is both a knowledge and time issue. Of course you and I know that the COP is reduced as the temp drops and these intersecting lines will vary from home to home. But you have to go on what you do know. I would never be concerned about the economic balance point when oil and propane are the backups. You just run the heat pump as low as it can go and/or comfort issues come into play. Nat gas though is where knowing the economic balance point could prove to be handy if you want to be operationally efficient as possible with fuel choice. Not my strong suit and I don't have the time to waste on this without being reimbursed. And that's always an issue in the HVAC business. Keep in mind most of the people who contribute to this forum do have an outside life. Sometimes these posters forget that. Everyone wanting your knowledge for nothing. It is generally accepted that COP begins to really take a hit around freezing. Of course lower for the GreenSpeeds and higher for low end junk that unfortunately there is plenty of supply. "The COP that you used in your fuel cost comparison - 2.47 - would suggest an outside temp in the 40s or 50s I would have thought. A COP around 30 degrees anbient temp would seemingly be down in the 1-1.25 range for many regular HPs." As I said I used 2.75 COP in this thread which may be conservative but I believe is fair. And you are correct that this COP is based on mid 40s outside temp. But as I have said previously, you must go on what you know. And I always preface these results to be used as a guide only. I would not agree with you that at freezing COP would be in the range of 1-1.25 for a high quality HP system. TD

Thank you all for your replies. I did download the installation manual, and after mapping out all the wiring, I found out why the pump was always defrosting and corrected it, along with some other wiring mistakes, and I replaced his wires twisted around the relay terminals with proper spade connectors. I also found a dip switch on the thermostat that was causing the 2 minute delay. However, I couldn't find an exterior thermostat as ziggyhere mentioned, but the heat pump's wiring diagram shows a temperature sensor; could the old system have used that as the outdoor thermostat? If not, my parents are on a dual rate from their power company: they get a discounted rate as long as the outside temp stays above -12 degrees Celsius or around 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The power company installs a temp sensor in a housing that mounts between the meter pan and the meter itself, with 24 VAC present at the furnace when the temperature is above the setpoint of 10 degrees. Could the old system have been using the signal from the POCO sensor to shut off the heat pump and switch to oil? Also, when the temperature outside was around 16 degrees Fahrenheit, sometimes the oil burner would come on for a couple minutes (and the heat pump would shut off), and it doesn't do that anymore; could that be a feature of the old system, or could it be a feature of the heat pump itself? Also, with the old system if we raised the thermostat's setpoint even by a few degrees, the oil burner would kick in until the desired temperature is reached, but the new system doesn't do that; is it typical of dual heat systems, or was it just a feature of the old system and I shouldn't worry too much about it? Finally, I have heard and read several times that below a certain temperature, heat pumps lose their efficiency and there was indeed a chart in the heat pump cover, but after 21 years out there, it isn't legible anymore. It's an ICP 2-ton unit, if that matters. Because the system would often rely on the oil burner past the 16 degree mark, I assume that is where that particular heat pump starts losing its efficiency. Is it putting more strain on the compressor to let it run below that threshold? Thanks again for taking time to help me, and have a nice day!

And auto shops are on every corner. If you wanted your question answered, you didn’t do it in an optimal way. You didn’t even Google it, I’d bet. I can Google “disconnect wiring from Saturn fuse box” and get over a million hits. And I’m 75. You’re acting all 105, and never seen a computer before. My 95 year old mother isn’t that old and knows what Google is, and now to use it. Don’t have a clue which GM thought the “rebel” division of Saturn should use for their wiring connections. I know which Corvette uses. And the old GM trucks. And the old Volvo’s. And Mercedes. And I have broken my share when I guessed wrong on something else. Thanks jemdandy and bob_k for replying to my question. But, I can't find any power control panel/box or any rely block under the hood. The only thing in the upper center of my firewall is a duct running from my heater blower to the inside under dash area.

I've found a diagram that shows the fuel pump relay to be mounted on the upper firewall right beside the power brake booster, but when I look there it isn't anywhere to be found.

I've never had a problem like this when trying to locate a switch/relay on a car and it's getting a little frustrating. But, I know it has to be somewhere and sooner, or later, I'll find it.

Anybody else have any insight?

Try this location:

Driver side, near battery, May have fan relay and fuses also.

It's on the relay bracket, at the center of the cowl, rear of the engine bay. The fuel pump relay is the closest one to the power brake booster.

I found a slender black box about center of the firewall that had 5 unmarked relays in it. I tried the new relay in each socket one at a time but no joy. Either the relay isn't one of these, or the problem is somewhere else. I've got power through the fuel pump fuse, but none to the pump and the gas hand goes past full and stays there when I turn the ignition switch on.

There is a relay behind the battery, but it's an oval shaped one and the relay I have is square.

I'm about to go back out and check the circuit to the tank again. I'll post back later. If anybody has any other ideas about what might be the cause of my problems please let me know.

Lots of ideas about what is wrong, but the answer lies in testing the system correctly. Behind the LF strut there is a gray connector with a red wire that does not appear to connect to anything. Take a test light and connect it to the battery positive terminal, and to that connector. The relay when turned off actually closes that connection and that feeds the fuel pump and is called a fuel pump priming connector. If the test light does not turn on the circuit is open or has excessive resistance. When you turn the key on without cranking the engine the relay will be turned on for about two seconds and then turn back off. The testlight should turn off, for that two seconds and then turn back on.

Tell us what happened with this test, and then I'll tell you what to do next.

After checking out the fuel pump plug connections at the rear of the gas tank I found out that the pump itself had quit working. I installed another pump and the car started right up.

Thanks for the tip john_g. I've printed out your instructions in case I need them in the future. I've noticed that loose connector there before but I never really gave much thought to it. It's good to know that it can be used for diagnostics.

I'm still somewhat perplexed about not knowing the location of this relay, but now that I've got the car going again I can kinda take my time and find out where it is. I might take it by a Pontiac dealer this week and see if they can show it to me.
