I swear by Natural Magic odor absorbing gel. (Link below). Similar products like Citrus Magic work, and I just found a new brand I've tried (Clean Air) that seems to work equally well as Nat Magic. Bought a vintage Drexel bedroom set a couple years ago, dead of winter so I couldn't air it outside. It was beautiful and pristine but the inner drawers of one dresser had a perfume odor that nearly bowled me over. I cleaned it with mild dishwashing liquid and a tad of bleach just for kicks (and I wanted to clean it anyway). Odor stuck, so I put 3 containers inside the dresser, kept the drawers cracked open a bit (air flow enhances the odor removal with these products per the label) and left them there for several weeks, rotating between all the drawers. Took awhile, but it completely removed the odor. I've used it in all kinds of scenarios for all kinds of odors (pet, smoke, mildew, rental houses when showing, cars, inside furniture, etc.) Never lets me down! You can find these products at most hardware and big box stores like H Depot and Lowes has a good selection. About $1 cheaper at big box stores vs smaller hardware and paint stores. Oh, also Gonzo odor absorbing volcanic stones. You can get them in small bags for closet size and larger for room size. I've seen those at Home Depot. Mara... I would LOVE to live off-post, but we have 3 chows ( sweetest, most friendly dogs ever ) and most places here at Hood won't let renters have "aggressive breeds" We're allowed to have them on post as long as we keep insurance on them and they don't cause any problems. When we first moved in, the backyard had those old metal poles for line drying, but no line. A few weeks later, maintenance came and took the poles out and we had to sign an agreement to not hang dry laundry to help keep up the appearance of the neighborhood. We have a back porch, but its not covered and is closed on three sides and we back up right next to the housing office haha. I supposed if this load is still stinky, I will just suck it up and them to the cleaners. I really appreciate all the suggestions you all have given me! I have gotten so much help for many problems.. who knew laundry could be so complicated?!

If returning isn't a possibility then I would cut a foot or so off one of the rolls and aggressively air and dry it to see if that changes the odor. Do you see any signs of mold colonies? If not, it may be that it was just stored in a dampish, air-less place and has acquired that smell, but not actual fungal infection. Wallpaper, even new stuff, has a stale/musty smell to me. If a lot of air improves the odor noticeably, than that's what I'd do before hanging it. One technique that is sometimes used with books that have acquired a stale smell is to close them up with a 3-5" deep layer (on the bottom of a plastic container) of non-clumping kitty litter (the clay stuff, unscented and poured in, first, not over the item). For wall paper rolls I'd use a tall container like a clean garbage can with a tight-fitting lid (or seal it up with tape.) Put the rolls on a rack above the litter and never in contact with the litter. Leave it sealed for a few weeks. (Air and dry them well first and use the litter to draw out the remaining smell.) Some recommend doing the same thing with solid air fresheners, but those smell so foul to me it's worse than stuffiness and I think you are just covering the smell up. The true source of mustiness is slight dampness which responds well to airing and dehydration. I might even go so far as to loosely unroll the paper (so air can penetrate to all layers) and keep it in a dry area, or a room with a dehu going. You might also do a test hang of your cut-off sample to see if re-wetting it with paste (wallpaper paste is famously ideal mold-food) brings the problem back. Leave it on a sample board in your intended room to see if anything awful grows on it. Two caveats: both high heat (think ironing the paper) and freezing are sometimes recommended as cures for mold on paper. Aside from the risk of potential damage to the paper itself, both treatments have the possibility that they will create a rebound affect with resting spores of the mold, bringing it back worse than ever. You know that is a bad habit so BREAK IT! Even if you plan on being a bachelor for the rest of your life, you need to made a change. Did you notice the smell in the towels or the washer? Chance it is both. A front loading washer needs to be dried out in the bottom of the gasket, even the small lip toward the back. Clean all that area with white vinegar to kill the mold, then leave the door opened for at least a day, after each load, to be sure it is dry. May I sugest using a plastic clothes basket for a hamper. It doesn't close and gives things a chance to dry. I still recommend hanging that towel to dry first. The basket gives you something for carrying those clothes to the washer and also for bring them back to the bedroom / bathroom. Yes, I was scolding you! (for your own good, of course!) 8o)
