Has anyone else noticed the diesel warnings?

When I was buying gas the other day I noticed a warning on the diesel pump. It says that's it's a low sulphur diesel and not to be used in 2007 cars or there will be engine damage. What are you suppose use instead and why bother to buy a diesel if you can't find fuel?

You're supposed to use ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel. 2007-model on-road diesel vehicles have to meet tighter emissions standards than previous diesels had to meet. A key to meeting these standards is reducing greatly the amount of sulfur in diesel fuel. Without so much sulfur, diesels can use catalytic convertors and particulate (soot) filters which high levels of sulfur would ruin. Until this year, diesel fuel sold in the U.S. was among the worst in the world. But, this fall, ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD) will hit the pumps. All on-road diesel engines can use ULSD with no problems.

Trouble is, the new sulfur standard is so low that it doesn't take much "low-sulfur" fuel to push the sulfur specification past the point where it could cause damage to these new emissions systems. Given that gasoline, "regular" diesel, and ULSD all travel the same petroleum pipelines and tanker trucks and ULSD will go into not-quite-empty diesel tanks at fuel stations, it will take a bit for fills of ULSD to sufficiently dilute the existing low-sulfur fuel. Conventional wisdom in the diesel-user's world is that three "turns" of a tank should bring the sulfur level down low enough. But, in the meantime, if you have a vehicle that requires ULSD, the warning reminds you that the fuel you're thinking of pumping doesn't qualify as ULSD yet.

It's kind of like when catalytic converters were first introduced in cars, making unleaded fuel necessary -- the warnings about the old fuel containing lead were there to warn you. In very short order, just about every diesel pump will have ULSD and we'll all be happier.

I've seen some bees, but I've never really noticed bees at this time of year in past years. I've heard that there's some sort of disease ruining their nests. Whatever is happening, I'm hoping the bees will stay because more bees = more fruits/seeds (more pollination). From what I've been told, worms will rapidly produce eggs when they feel that their lives are threatened as to keep their 'lineage' going. Praying and hoping the weather won't be too out of the ordinary. I've seed lots of birds this year...and am having regular visits from bunnies (at first they ate my tulips but now they leave even my seedlings alone and go for the weeds in the lawn instead). I have noticed lots of winged insects (flies, bees, wasps) that are flying. I saw a wasp on my iris, and wanted to sho it away so I could cut the iris, but it didn't move. It sort of eventually rolled off the flower onto the ground. Yes lots of bird eggs all over the place...I see lots of them crushed. I have an unknown white egg sitting next to my pumpkin plants but haven't touched it.

OMG. Doris, this is awesome news. We'll actually have a place where we can all relate to the same times that things sprout and how big they're getting. Ginny, we have some fat ones here to - usually they are smaller. I have to put a wire cage around the feeder and thought it would keep out the starlings but no such luck. I was going to make the cage holes smaller but the woodpeckers wouldn't be able to get in then and now the fat chickadees wouldn't be able to get in either! When we put up the feeders we planted 2 pear trees close by, now every morning we get up to see 2 dove trees with chickadees interspersed. Rosie used to chase the smaller birds but now there's bigger game - crows & ravens! Marg

Behr pain problem -- anyone else notice this?

I stand corrected. Behr now labels their Premium Plus paint as self priming. So, Behr makes Behr Ultra which they call "paint and primer in one" which is more expensive. Behr also makes Behr Premium Plus which is labeled "self priming". Go figure. According to my wife, a former Home Depot Paint Department Head, Behr Ultra is recommended by Behr for high contrast color changes such as white over black. Behr Premium Plus is recommended to cover light colors with light colors. Mainly, she's been told by Behr, it's the amount of solids in the can that makes the difference. Additionally, not all paint and primer or self priming paints are created equal, some simply dump in more titanium dioxide and call it self priming and/or paint and primer in one. The whole concept of paint and primer and self priming is a misnomer. Of course they do not have what is traditionally considered primer and paint in one can.
