Axle Ration ?

What does the axle ration (differential ration) mean.
For example on the Chevy Colorado Pickup it has either
3.42 or 3.7x, foret the last digit after 7. Does this mean, for example that with the first the engine rotates 3.42 times for each revolution of the axle, and it is thus a hight gear (lower RPM -> better gas mileage) than the 3.7x (but not by much)?
I do recall small changes in the axle ration make big changes in the engine RPM, thus load carrying capacity.
