Jeep overheating

My Jeep suddenly overheated on the highway just out of the blue. It's got 200,000 miles never overheated before coolant was fine water levels were fine til this happened. a thermostadt (new) did not help it still overheats after just 10 minutes or so of running (this after it cooled down) how likely is it the water pump?

First off, we need to know about what you got. What year is it and what motor and acessories you have?

Since it has 200,000 miles on it, for the following discussion, I am assuming it is an older Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0 Liter 6 cylinder engine. This engine has two fans: A small belt driven one and a larger electric fan. You jeep will overheat in hot weather if the fans do no work. In cooler weather, the electric fan hardly ever turns on geting enough cooling from the small belt driven fan.

The belt driven fan has a viscous clutch that is temperature controlled. By default, this fan is fully energized at startup nad if its temperature is low, i will begin to disengage with time. After about 5 minutes, it should be at idle condition if cool, that is, the fan will not be at full speed. This fan turns all the time, but when it is not needed, it runs slow. When needed, the fluid clutch comes into play and the fan comes up to speed. It is quite noisy when at speed.

If the small fan is working, at startup it should be full on and making fan noise. A few minutes later, it will quiet down if not needed. If the viscous clutch is not working and this fan is not coming on when things get hot, that may part of the problem. It supplies about 30% of air flow capacity to the radiator. The other 2/3 is supplied by the large electric fan.

The large electric fan is supposed to turn on when the coolant get hot. Does it turn on? A temperature switch controls this function. I'd have to check my manuals, but this switch may not directly operate the fan; it may signal the engine controller (computer) and the controller operates fan relay. The relay handles the subtantial current draw of this fan. There are 3 items in this chain of control: the temperature sensor/switch, the engine controller, and the relay. The item most likely to fail is the temperature switch, next is the relay, next is a fuse, and then the fan itself. The final failure parts is the engine controller.

The big fan is usually off when traveling at highway speeds except if in extreme desert like temperatrues.

The big fan comes in to play in stop and go traffic on hot days.

A clogged radiator is possible. According to your post, the problem began while traveling at highway speed. Another possibility is a collasping lower radiator hose. The hose is different in construction to the upper hose. The lower hose must contain features to prevent collaspe. Some hoses have a coiled spring wire in the hose while other contain anti-collaspe construction.

The thermostat: If the thermostat failed and closed, overheating follows quickly. You said that a new thermostat did not fix the problem. Two possibilites: the new thermostat was installed backwards. A thermostat installed upside down will not open as quickly as it should. The sensing element should face toward the hot side. Consult your manual. If the new thermostat was installed correctly, then look elsewhere (assuming the new thermostat is a good unit). Was it tested in a pan of hot water to see if it works?

How do you know that the water level was ok? Looked at the overflow bottle? The radiator can be short of water with a normal fluid level in the overflow bottle. The coolant system is 'closed' in that it is designed not admit air. Again, I make another assumption that you have a proper radiaro cap in place. it has 2 seals in it. The outer seal fits on the top of the fill neck and seals that opening from the atmosphere. The second seal is on the spring loaded pressure valve. This valve limits system pressure. When the set point pressure is exceeded, coolant forces it way past the valve and flows through a hose to the overflow bottle. After the system cools down, a partial vacuum deveops and coolant is drawn from the overflow bottle back into the radiator.

If there is an air leak anywhere between the radiator fill neck and the bottle, air is drawn into the system on cooldown instead of fluid. After a few thermal cycles, the engine coolant system is short of fluid. If the fluid level iin hte bottle si not behaving as expected, inspect the path from the bottle to the radiator for leaks. Old oveflow hoses have been known to develop splits on the underside.

A water pump is a possibility. it can fail by eroding the impeller until it is a poor pump. I have been drivng a 6 cylinder 4.0 liter jeep engine since 1993 (on my second one) and have not seen an impeller failure.

I'd check these items first:

1. Both fans.

2. Radiator cap.

3. Wind blown trash in and across the radiator core. You did remove that piece of cardboard that was put in there for winter driving? If you have an air conditioner, clean its core of trash also. It sits in front of the main radiator and can block part of the air flow.

4. Lower radiator hose.

If the temperature gauge shows overheating but everything seems nornal and an external probe measures normal engine temperature, then suspect the temperature sensor for the gage.

You could, of course, take it to a shop.

mith, Not sarcastic at all... you said "regardless of what the Kohler tech says. I can only comment based on my experience, and that of others" and I submitted that the Kohler tech is in a position to observe a far larger sampling than your test and your experience. You dismissed, out of hand and in general, the specific instructions of a tech/engineer whose job it is to make accurate tech information available to the end users of its products. So, regardless of what you say I accept what the Kohler tech says... no offense. The manuals for the GT/LT/YT tractors I've owned had specific instructions to use FULL THROTTLE whenever an attachment or accessory was engaged. My GT has a Kohler Command CH18s and an oil temp gauge. I can leave it idling all day long and the temp gauge doesn't rise above the low limit peg. After 10 minutes mowing it is at the mid green zone, about 2/3 across the gauge. I wasn't commenting on welder/generators because this is the tractor forum, and this thread is about tractors, but now that you mention it, every generator I own or have owned gave me no choice but full throttle (as determined by the governor) or off. I am aware of generators than can, and do, vary their speed according to load but I have not owned one.

I doubt that you smell the caliper- its mostly metal - but the brake pads can stink. Often, new pads give off an oder during the break-in period. The pads get hot when the brakes are applied and the fresh binder outgasses. It may smell like hot phenolic. This oder goes away after break-in. It will return should the brakes become overheated. I do not know who replaced your caliper. If it was done by a professional brake shop, I'd expect they would have made sure that the caliper was free to slide on its pins. If the pins show signs of corrosion, most brake shops would replace the pins. But if this was not the case, and the calipers were replaced without paying attention to the pins or the proper lubrication of these pins, the caliper can stick and cause uneven wear between the inner and outer pads. Also, rotor problems may develop since most of the braking effort is happening one side of the rotor; the rotor is being forced from one side and it may flex a small amount. Excessive brake drag can occur if the fluid pressure is not relieved or the piston seals are sticking and not allowing the pads to retract. There are no return springs in the caliper piston. A small amount of relief is obtained by the flex action of the seal. With the brakes off, the pad do rub gently on the rotors and may release completely by the return action of the piston seals. I assume that when the calipers were replaced, a complete caliper with pistons and new seals installed were used. And I assume the brake lines were bled. If all these bases have been covered and the brakes still have excessive drag, look elsewhere for the problem. Find out why excessive brake fluid pressure exists with the brakes off. Make sure the brake fluid is of the proper type and free of contaminamts. Brake fluid will readily absorb moisture from the atmosphere. Water in brake fluid can cause big problems with a potentail of brake lockup under hard prolonged braking. Moisture can flash to steam when the calipers go above the boiling point of water.

I don't think you should automatically take it to another shop. You're already into it for $300 with these guys who thought they fixed it but didn't. Don't know what your engine looks like or what they did for sure so I don't have an opinion as to if $300 was reasonable or not. Could have happened like this. Your vehicle had a coolant leak and overheated for whatever reason. They fill it up and pressure test. Find that leak, repair it. Pressure test again, no leaks. Run it for a while, gets to normal temp and holds there. They conclude...maybe falsely, the leak was the only problem, that it overheated because because the coolant level was too low because of that leak they repaired. Under what conditions does it overheat and how long does it take? Idleing in traffic, or cruising down the road? AC on or off? Only when it's hot outside, or does it matter? Overheating usually isn't that tough to diagnose if given enough details. The coolant going away due to a leak would certainly be one of the causes. Other possibilities would be the thermostat not working, electric cooling fan(s) or fan clutch not working will do it. Radiator plugged up inside or a bunch of junk restricting air flow on the outside will do it. Even the cap not holding pressure can cause it. The shop you took it to is guilty at most of not being thorough enough. That would be easy to do if you came in and said something like you were just driving along and all of a sudden it overheated. jmo Glad to see you back earthworm. Well if it was really only that easy. I repaired a Jeep Cherokee that had bounced around between 5 shops/techs. The problem surfaced alledgedly right after a major transmission replacement. The symptom was a surging/high idle speed, missfire/cutout when driving. The AC was inoperative, the clutch would not engage. The customer had already tried adding refrigerant with sealer himself, without gages. Plus the 4WD display was blank. The soultion was the computer had failed, but before the computer could be replaced, every possible reason that something on the car could be causing the computers microprocessor to continually reset had to be explored, and proven to NOT exist. Plus I also had to be sure that something else on the data bus on the car was not causing the reset to occur. There are no training manuals anywhere, nor is there service information/repair manuals written at this level. Guys like me are totally on our own with this stuff, and we often spend two times as much time studying the system at home to make each diagnostic move faster, and in analyzing the results to make sure we haven't overlooked something which would result in a customer potentially buying a part they do not need. I had well over eight hours time in this car, and ultimately billed three. The result had everything working, and I did notice some belt squeal, it was a newer, and properly tightened (within tension specs) serpentine belt. Now do you think this guy appreciated what I did? I did not sell any unneeded parts or service and I even cut him a significant break on the real amount of time required to do that. For my trouble I can tell you that I have 80% of the fuel injection wiring diagram memorized for a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee. That's how close I had to study this system to be positive I was making the correct call. He went out to the Jeep after paying his bill, five minutes later he came back in and wanted me to go outside and hear something. He was concerned about the belt "chirping" when the AC was turned on. He was complaining that it did not do it before, well of course it didn't, the AC had not worked in the month and a half they had been fighting this. I told him shut the engine off, and went inside and got my laptop, and my belt tension gage. I showed him the spec, then I measured the tension on the belt and showed him it was in spec. The I showed him how the belt that was on the Jeep was one of the discount aftermarket replacement ones, that does not actually fit the pulleys correctly. He still insisted that I do something, and at that point I said fine, I'll take it to the maximum tension allowed on the spec, for a fee. At that point he balked, and said it's not adjustable, it has a spring tensioner, which I really got a laugh out of, because I asked him to show it to me. Then I showed him how the belt adjusted with the idler that is just below and inside of the power steering pump. I then asked him, who put this belt on? He said it was another shop he had dealt with recently, and I asked him why not go back to them and have them deal with it? His reply? Because he didn't pay them for it. I didn't press him for details at this point, but one way or another he managed to coerce them into doing it for free, or flat out managed to rip them off somehow. In the end, he paid me to adjust the belt. I refused to touch the rest of the AC system at all, because the sealers that he added have the potential of damaging my AC recovery/recharge equipment, and I'm not ready to have to spend another $4,000 on a new one. I also told him to the best that I could be sure, the transmission shop had nothing to do with the failure of the computer. Three days later the transmission shop involved called me up. He had not seen this guy and was glad that I had straightened his Jeep out. He was having trouble with a Ford tranny he had rebuilt and needed me to help him figure out what was wrong. He had one dissapointing thing to say. No matter what the outcome was, this guy with the Jeep would bad mouth me about fixing his car. It's just the way the guy is..........
