jack wheel

is there any place that sells small ball bearings for various applications? my swivel wheel on floor jack has lost most of the balls from the bearing assembly. the jack works fine but the rear swivel wheel is a little sketchy. new swivel wheels are $35 approx. i could get 2 so they match. or buy a $20 toy jack at autostore and reuse rear swivel wheels and throw jack away. or put it in car trunk to use in emergency?

I need a steel wheel. Max height of mounting pad is 2.5" or so. Sure, lots of cute little rubber wheels. No small steel wheels.

Between 2005 -2007 Hustler had major problems with wheel motors especially on the right side for some reason when they were used on hilly terrain. The bad ones are. White CE 18 part number 782383. In 2007 they were replaced by.. White RC 18 CCW" part number 601220.

To install tubes in the tires, you'll have to break the side-walls away from the rims. to do this, it can be done with large C-clamps, by tightening the clamp against both side walls, and turning it in until they pull away from the rims. To get it all the way off, lubricate the tire bead and rim with oil or grease, and carefully pry the tire off the rim. After cleaning and priming/ painting the inside of the rim, and its' dry, lube the inner bead of the tire, and force it onto the rim, using a rubber hammer. Now, with the one bead inside the rim, and the other bead not, spread the tire out and stuff the inner tube inside, spreading it out all around the rim. Stick the valve out thru its hole, and tie a string to it. Before installing the tube, you should pump the tube up enough to get the wrinkles out of it, then let the air back out of it!, and install it, as above. Then, after its inside the tire, carefully get the other bead of the tire onto the rim! Be careful the valve doesn't slip into the rim!(The string) Now, pump the tire up to seat it on the rim, watching that no part of the tube is caught between tire and rim! Then leave the air back out until it has gone down well. Using the rubber hammer, pound on the tire so any wrinkles in the tube will be gone, then reinflate it, and you should be good to go! (With the rim off the machine, we used to bounce it on the pavement) All of the preceding is a tried and perfected method of replacing tires and tubes, as taught to me by The Gulf Oil company service station schools, way back in 1946! We had no fancy tire repair machines, nor tubeless tires, no Flat-fix, Slime, nothing except hard work! HTH: Rustyj

There are several other places where it is called the same The Conestoga Wagon could carry 8 tons of freight. The long held belief was that the stems on the outside were more vulnerable to damage so they were installed inside. That may have been true in the old tube days where it didn't take much pull on a valve stem to rip the tube. With the onset of tubeless tires that doesn't seem to be a problem and if it does happen replacing a tubeless stem is far easier than repairing or replacing a tube. Most front wheels are symmetrical and can easily be flipped stem out or stem in. Just make sure you pay close attention to exactly how the E clip is installed cause there's a sharp and a rounded edge. Sharp edge of the E clip faces out toward the end of the axle and it does make a difference. L&G front wheels ride on bushings (metal or plastic) or caged ball bearings. You can routinely pull the wheels, check for recessive play, and lightly grease the axles and bushings. Caged bearings are usually sealed and require no attention unless they fail. Always check for wear on the stub axles when checking the bushings.

Try looking for replacement bearings in catalogs of suppliers dealing in bearings. Try contacting the manufacturer of the jack for replacement parts.

A selection of casters is shown in the link below. These are supplied by Grainger. One caveat however, Grainger is an industrial supplier and you will need a tax number to buy from them. This site was given as an example of what is availble. They supply wheels made in iron, ductile iron, and forged steel. A forged caster cost hundreds of dollars, ductile iron is less, with cast iron the lowest cost. To create the list in the link below, I filtered to show only casters with load ratings of 250 and 450 lbs.

I do not recommend you go buy a 'toy' product and use those wheels unless you know the rating. Wheel load rating is very important for this application. You do not want to be under a vehicle or have your hands in the works when a wheel collaspes. Never depend on a jack. Hydraulic jacks have been known to suddently drop their loads. Support the vehicle with jack stands or with other appropriate means.

The wheel/caster load rating must ne more than 1/4 the load rating of the jack because the wheels are not equally loaded, and the load changes on the wheels as the jack is extended. The load center shifts as the jack extends. Also,the loading can be shifted on uneven terrain. A conservative rating is for each wheel to be equal to the jack rating. A lesser amount might be 1/2 of this but is not recommended.

Again, your best bet is to contact the maker of the jack. They should have repair parts.

I cut apart some old bearings. My jack wheel balls are .070 diameter. The donor balls are .093 or so? Old wheel had 3 balls. I need about 12 or so. The swivel fits together fairly well so balls are retained securely. The race area is pretty sloppy. Not exactly a semi- circular groove for balls. Mostly a flat raceway. The $20 mini-jacks have small swivel wheels. Probably 3/4 scale? I would assume for their liability issues, the wheels are good. Jack is rated for 2 tons.
