factory auto paint in a can?

Hi All,

We just bought a 1994, Ford Aspire for our teenage daughter. Except for some minor dings and scratches it is in great condition and has its orginal factory paint. Question is, is there somewhere I can buy spray paint to match the original? There are a few places I'd like to touch up. Is there even such a thing for purchase?

Yes, there are websites where you can order touch-up paint in the small bottles and also in spray cans. If you do a Google search I'm sure you can find one. I ordered some in a bottle from one of the sites some time ago but have not used it yet. Don't expect professional results with the spray, but it should come with detailed instructions to help you get the best results possible. You will need the paint code from the car.

Thanks for the tip. I broke my cardinal rule of not googleing it first!

It's an old car and dab here and there of paint will make it look a bit better.

The advantages of a factory paint job is the uniformity of the coverage, as well as the UV cured catalytic varnish topcoat which makes a modern factory finish cabinet virtually impervious to damage. Some of the more spendy lines even have "hand painted" doors if the "plastic" look of sprayed cabinets is wrong for you. THen they are covered by the clearcoat for durability. Best of both worlds, but expensive. The downside (or upside, depending on your viewpoint) of site painted cabinetry is brushstrokes and lack of durability. Site painted cabinetry also has a problem with trash getting into the finish that you don't get even from a custom cabinet maker who at least paints off site in his clean room. There is NO way I'd want a site finished cabinetry for my home. I'd at least want the better quality job done off site in a controlled environment, even if the cabinet maker didn't have the technological capability to use the catalytic varnish topcoat, at least the finish wouldn't have dust and hairs in it.

We had this problem arise with our last kitchen. We had all the cabs custom built by a local cabinetmaker; pine with a whitewashed finish on them. The color faded, yellowed and rubbed off very quickly. Over the next seven years, we talked with many experts in the fields of paint, construction, cabinetmaking,insurance claims, etc., in conjunction with the lawsuit we filed (because the cabs were falling apart and off the walls, not because of the fading, though). We were told over and over again that factory paint finishes are much harder and more durable. The experts we talked with did say that the expertise of the cabinetmaker, which clear sealer he puts over the painted finish and how many coats he puts on does impact the durbility a lot, but their opinions all still went with the factory finish as being the hardest and most durable. For this new kitchen we just had put in, there was never a question which we'd go with . . . but that was very much colored by the nightmare cabs we had before.

Thank you for your responses. Sadly there are very few people on the FPE link above near me who do this. I contacted one of the two listed painters previously and it's almost $3,000 to just paint the front door! I contacted the second person and will see how that goes. I thought it was odd more people weren't doing this but now I know why. Who is going to pay $3,000 to paint a $1200 door?? (Hopefully not me!) I know auto body shops do it but I agree that it doesn't seem like a very profitable project for them so I haven't pursued it.

My painted cabinets are in their 8th year now - only one nick from when I dropped a paring knife and the point caught the edge of a drawer (touched up and not visible now). Mine were done by a cabinet maker so not "factory finish" but they were a conversion varnish. Good quality should not peel ever, excluding extraordinary circumstances that might soak the wood (but stained cabs wouldn't stand up to that, either!) Splashes from the sink shouldn't cause that, and a habit can be made of drying the splashes with a towel once the washing is done. Neither budget quality paint nor stain will stand up to high humidity, frequent dousing with water, abrasion and so forth. One thing with a light paint though, is you will likely see food spills and splatters more than with a stain finish. This doesn't bother me, it actually made me incorporate a regular wipe down of my cabinets into my cleaning routine - better than letting the grunge build up unnoticed IMO and an easy clean up with my sponge and a little dish detergent.

Ford dealership parts department usually has it also and they can tell you some tips on how to prep and apply it.

Any autobody supply house or any body shop will make you the paint. The Factory paint. There are lots of supply houses that will put the paint in a spray can for you. First check your auto supply stores like pep boys or Napa
and bring your paint code. the ford code is two letters
like G.R. T.S. and is found in the driver door. If they don't have it your vehical has " base coat, clear coat " and has to be made for you. BRING MONEY and you had better know what you are doing because it will look like hell if
you don't prepare it properly. If the paint chip is no
bigger than half the size of a pencle eraser you could use
the touch up paint than comes in something that looks like a finger nail polish bottle. do not put the paint on too
dark because the car will look like it has the measles.
Take your time and be carefull. you should be fine. The
most important advice i can give you is make sure what you
paint is clean and dry with no sharp edges. Good luck.
