That's a lot of miles for both the engine and transmission. It might be ok if the engine has been replaced. Yeah, it's running ok now, but ask yourself, how many more miles are left in it before a major overhaul is required. Also, before I'd buy, I would have the suspension components and brakes inspected. At this mileage, a driver has sat in the driver's seat for many hours and miles. How is the seat holding up? Do all the accessories work? What about the electric windows (if present)? Do the winshield wiper and horn work? All exterior lights? Heater/AC, etc.?

If the price is low enough, go ahead and purchase bearing mind that it may not have many miles left in it, and depending on condition, it may not be worth repairing. At this level of miles, it will be worth your while to shop further to see what else is available.

Too old , too many miles , Honda or not ! Cars like that are money pits waiting to happen , even seals give out from age , no matter how the car might have been babied . Stay away from this one , plenty of other used cars out there without a zillion miles on em !

The amount of mileage sounds excessive to me. I have a chevy with over 150K miles on it. It runs very good, but I wouldn't try to sell it to anyone at this point.

Thanks for your opinions. The high milage has me kinda scared. I read on a honda forum of other cars with this milage or better and they all seem to rave about their cars going longer. Not sure about the States but here in Canada Honda dealerships won't let a car go out that's not road worthy and of course I'd ask to see their remakes on the car. I haven't seen it yet so maybe this week end I'll have some more answers. I really want a Prelude and I've looked at a lot of "mint" cars that are far from it and other than miles this one sounds good. My present car is an 87 Prelude with 268,000KM on it and it's still going strong but I'm worried none the less about the 92.
Jasper, this car is going for $ 4800.00 not a bad price, canadian dollars of course.

your driving something 19 years old with a 167,000 miles and you want to spend $4800 on somthing 14 years and 233,000 miles? Just because its five years newer time-wise it doesn't sound like an upgrade. There has got to be somthing better available. If your car is "still going strong" then run it until it dies or replace it with something that's not at the end of its life. FWIW, I'm tired of people trying to convince me that a car with 150,000 miles is "just broken in" because its a Honda or a Toyota. Sure they have some longevity and a reasonable track record, but at that stage it is still a machine that has been pretty well-used.

Too much money!! I bought my brothers 96 Toyota Avalon with 225K miles (mostly highway) ans small front fender damage for my 16 yr. old new driver. Runs great but I only paid $300 (he did give me blue book less the fender damage). I figure I'll just junk it if it needs major repair at some point, which no doubt it will. Could go for awhile though, since he had routine maintenance. For $4800, you should be able to do better. Check the internet to get an idea.

$4800 sounds about right in Mexican Peso's. US or Canadian dollars? No way I'd pay that much. Pretty good chance you'd be buying a $4800 Honda lawn ornament. Or a $4800 start to your own Honda recycled parts store. jmo

Every car I've looked at has been from the internet and I've looked at lots of them in various shapes of " mint " condition which is a laugh really. Any Japanese car in Canada goes for twice the amount of an American car. I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything I simply wanted opinions.

"Any Japanese car in Canada goes for twice the amount of an American car." then maybe you should start looking at American cars. GM is working with Toyota and Ford is working with Mazda. There's a lot of crossover. You can probably buy the same Japanese car with an American badge.

you know...there was a time when "Made in America" was good and "Made in Japan" was not. It reversed for a while but I believe the American manufacturers are coming back in order to survive. Look at the vehicle itself and not just the "opinion of the uninformed masses" from they're experiences in the late 70's and 80's.

I have nothing against American cars, having owned and driven a few in my day. I happen to like a smaller car now [gas prices are ridiculous in Canada] and really like the design, style and shape of the Honda Prelude. The price of these cars holds it own here and $ $4800.00 was one of the cheaper ones I've found.I even spotted that year selling for 9,800. which depends on how it's been modified. I can't go out and get a $10,000 car without going into debt and that's not what I want to do. And trying to find an older car in good shape without rust is like asking for ... the moon I guess. This one sounded good at this price except for the miles. I have no idea how many miles an engine is good for so thought I'd ask what you all thought. That depends on much that is beyond your control or almost anyone's knowledge. How were those miles acquired -- by some sales rep driving across the provinces on the highway or by some kid delivering pizzas? Did the previous owner(s) change oil when they were supposed to? Did they put in the right oil? Did they try to win the dragrace at every stoplight? Or were they model owners and the car really is barely broken in? In any case, it's a 15-year-old vehicle in a northern climate; it's led quite a life no matter who was behind the wheel.

It's not just the engine, there is also the wheel bearings, struts, alternator, timing belt, starter motor, CVs, gearbox/transmission, wiring harness, electrical components, all of which start failing (or failing again) after 250-300,000 km ..... not to mention the body.
