Mike, "I don't give a kumquat whether we are warming or cooling..." I am offended by your implication that there is anything negative about kumquats. They are great. I grew up with a tree that bore way more fruit than I could ever eat, and the extras served as excellent ammunition for throwing at my friends--especially the green ones b/c they are much harder. :) It is pretty funny with this current cold weather how much people on both sides of the debate cite it as evidence in their direction. As if one piece of datum out of context can lead to any kind of significant conclusion. Whenever winter rolls around gardenweb seems to slow down, which I find annoying considering I live NorCal where we don't have much of a winter. So I appreciate discussion topics that I find interesting regardless of how "on topic" they are for the various forums. I'm writing this from my computer that had the problem; so far so good. The dust was cleaned out it, fans were also cleaned, and the modem was replaced. We started with the cheapest part first. I really hope it is just the modem!! Like I said before: "...I rebooted and all seemed okay,that is until I tried to dial up the internet again. Boom, blue screen again. ...I got out the books and started checking the diagnostic lights, and any other troubleshooting guidance they provided. All appeared to be fine." A year ago when I had hard drive problems the diagnostic lights on the back were correct for the problem it had. I know, you're laughing at me now, those are probably like dummy lights on a dashboard and only tell you what the problem is when it is too late. But this didn't act like it did a year ago and then I only got one or two bootups in before it completely died. I'll keep everything backed up and pay close attention to anything weird and hopefully I won't see the bsod again! You are all great and I've saved all your comments and the links to both my computers! I'll let you know if this saga continues.

In my eMachine, in the Bios I can check the temperature, have you done this? Below is what I posted earlier. If your computer is getting hot it will cut off to protect the PC. If I had your computer I would want to know if your problem is in the hard drive or some were else. If you put your hard drive into another computer as a slave you can do 2 things. Error Checking and Copy your files to a CD. You can buy a hard drive enclosure for about $40.00 or less that will plug into a USB. This will allow you to remove your files. I'm not sure about running Error Checking from an enclosure. Ask someone. I bought one for mine for $20.00 from eMachine. --------------------------------------------------- If you can get an extra hard drive (Remove the old one) and use the eMachine Install CD (that you mention) the first thing your computer will want you to do is go online and Register it. You won't be allowed to use the computer except to Register. Just let the computer set and run, if it doesn't cut off than I would say the problem is in your hard drive.
