All Gas from Same Pipe?

87 Octane is recommended for our old lemonzine and we've used it for 10 years 55K miles no problem.

Last week we got a full tank of gas in Roseburg, OR, supposedly 87 Octane, Mobile Station, (sign said Tesoro), and our 95 Crown Vic knocked under load so bad I actually feared for the pistons. Never heard an engine knock like that ever. Gas burner or Diesel. This was NOT pinging. Not only steep back road adverses but freeway driving too (Oregon is spelled h-i-l-l-s).

Well I backed way out of it and finally eased far enough along till we could get enough good "Union 76" 92 Octane into it to balance out the other which cured the problem.

Could be you just got some "bad" gas. Even with stringent requirements for maintaining underground storage tank integrity some tanks still leak. Remember too, that the concern is gas leaking OUT of the tank not water leaking INTO the tank. Condensation might also form inside the tank, adding water. If the storage tank is running low the pump might suck up some water with the gas.

If by the title of your post you're implying that there is no difference between octane selections at a given station, it could be true but it's highly illegal.

It the higher grade helped the problem, then another tank or two of good stuff couldn't hurt.

My advice is don't buy gas there again. LOL

My house has masonry fireplace (was burning wood long time ago) that has gas starter pipe. Shut off valve is on a side of fireplace and its all black pipe inside of fireplace. Now, since I donÂt have any wood but I do have a set of ceramic logs from vented gas logs I was wondering if I can put those on top of the wood burning grate (they fit very nicely) And run fireplace like that. I understand that esthetic would not be the same as in whole set of gas logs but I care more about safety then look. And then in case when I want to burn wood, just to take ceramic logs off grate and load wood logs on. Would that work and are there any safety concerns on this setup? I run fireplace no more than few times a year. Thanks for all comments and ideas.

What your tech did is to install a sediment trap or 'dirt leg' on the gas line. It is not only common, it is a Code requirement to prevent dirt or flakes of metal from the inside of the pipe from clogging the gas inlet to any appliance. This dirt leg is installed so that it can be easily removed for cleaning in the event it does become full. Do all shower pipes/controls have to be on the same wall?

It's going to be a very long shower with no doors. I meant west in my original post! we were hoping to leave the controls on the west wall and move the shower head over to the other wall. There is a nice window on the east wall and I'm not sure if pipes on an exterior wall is a good idea. The window is far enough down the wall that splashing isn't going to be an issue. Nice to know that it can be done. Thanks! Something a little different is always fun. :)

If you figure 1CF of gas per hour as equal to about 1000 BTU/h then you would need a 1" main to serve your house and a 3/4" branch to serve both the water heater and a 120,000BTU/h furnace. The range can be served by a 1/2" branch. This presumes natural gas at low pressure and using schedule 40 black iron pipe.
