96 Honda Accord A/C not working! Help!

I have a 96 Honda Accord - the air conditioning is not working.

I thought it was low on refridgerant so I added some... it didn't help, so I added more... it still didn't help. So I bought another can with a pressure gauge and found out that it was now overfilled. I released some pressure and brought it back to normal, but it's still not working.

I noticed that the compressor isn't turning on. It will click and attempt to start turning but doesn't do anything. I'm pretty sure that it's part of the problem, if not the whole problem.

I've read on your forum and on the web about "bad switches" on compressors. Is this a part I can find and replace myself? I'm pretty handy with basic tools and I'm not afraid to get my hands greasy.

Can anyone advise me on what to do? I don't want to take it to a shop to have them charge me a fortune because they know the heat and humidity will be coming soon.

You have no idea what you are doing. send it out before
you cause some serious damage. Blowing freon into the air
is a serious fine up here. To bad you don't live here. I could use the $10,000.00 bounty. The B.C.M. plays a major part of a car's A.C. If you are not into car computers you aint fixing it.

Very likely a 98 cent part failed. But why did it fail ?
you have to fix that too and make sure i doesn't fail again.

low freon will prevent the compressor from cycling on for most cars. on most cars you can disconnect battery for several minutes and than restart car and the a/c should cycle on for 10 seconds or so. if your car does this than it probably is low on freon. you can put a gauge set on the car and check systems pressures. static should be 75psi or so. if nothing works than it could be on the control side of system. most shops start by checking system pressures.

First thing, ALL 1992 Civics are fuel injected, so flooding is not the issue. Very common failure in older Hondas is the MFR (Main Fuel Relay) When the vehicle won't start, turn the ignition ON (but don't start the engine) and listen for the fuel pump. It will make a slight humming noise from underneath. If you don't hear the fuel pump, your problem is with the MFR. Other common problem that causes a Honda not to start is the distributor. Check to see if you are getting any spark. How much should you worry if the car won't start up right away?>> Personally, I wouldn't worry at all. Chances are, the problem is minor and can be fixed relatively cheap. Are there other things that are "likely" to go wrong soon just due to the car being 13 years old?>> With only 91,000 miles, I wouldn't expect anything to go wrong... but I would expect to have to put some maintenance into the vehicle. Many parts that don't last forever. These include hoses, belts, fluids, gaskets, seals, brakes, sensors, etc. These are things that you will have to have serviced on ANY vehicle. Hondas are very reliable vehicles and will generally require less than the average in repairs during their lifetime. Their 4-cylinder engines have been proven time after time to remain solid and reliable even with high mileage. With only 91,000 miles, I can assume that it has plenty of life left to give... especially considering the service it's been given throughout the last 13 years. Continue with the service you've been doing, and also keep tabs on the CV axle boots. Replace them if they've never been replaced. The boots are relatively cheap and not difficult to replace. It will be MUCH cheaper than having to replace the entire cv axle if the boot splits. If they are already split, it's too late. CV xles are about $60 each from your local Auto Parts store and any half-way decent mechanic can replace them. Sometimes the plastic radiators have a tendency to crack along the upper tank and leak. Keep tabs on the radiator every time you have the oil changed or do an inspection under the hood every 3k miles. Radiators are about $80 for your Civic. If you haven't already, get those hoses and belts replaced! Also check for oil leaks underneath. Only driving the vehicle short distances and then leaving it sit for long periods of time plays hell on the gaskets/seals. Thats about it. I've got a 1981 Honda Civic wagon nearing 70k miles than I tool around town in (bought Christmas of 04 w/ 59k miles) I did the basics, and it's been running like champ ever since. My highway commuter is a 1996 Honda Accord, which has rolled over 220,000 miles and still going stronger than ever. Good luck.

There were some issues with some early-production 2013 Accord navigation systems. But most 2013s function normally. All Accords have an 8" screen that Honda calls the i-MID (intelligent Multi-Information Display) mounted in the center of the dash. It is the display for the Rearview Camera, trip computer, Bluetooth hands-free phone setup and settings, displays incoming text messages and several other minor features. On models with Navigation, it is also the NAV display screen and interface. There is a separate, smaller touch screen directly below the i-MID that handles all audio system funcitons. The A/C system is operated using actual buttons that are located below the audio control display. While the Accord's Navigation is perfectly functional, reliable and intuitive to use, I have one major issue with it- the price! Navigation costs $2000 on the 2013 and $1775 on the 2014. In comparable GM, Ford, Nissan, Mazda and Toyota sedans, adding Navigation only costs $560 to $795. Honda's NAV is ridiculously overpriced, costing up to 3x what it does in other mid-size sedans! Personally, that irks me. (Note- if you haven't considered the 2014 Mazda6, you owe it to yourself to do so before you make a final purchase decision!) The other issue I have with the Accord is the Honda Lane Watch feature. A tiny camera is mounted on the passenger side mirror and, when you activate your right turn signal, the i-MID screen shows a 4x larger area of the lane/area to your right. While itÃ¢ÂÂs better than just having the mirror alone, it isnÃ¢ÂÂt nearly as useful as the Blind Spot Monitor available on many other mid-size sedans. I have a 2012 Mazda CX-9 SUV and it has a Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) system. Most BSMs use sensors mounted in/under each corner of the rear bumper. When a vehicle is detected within the Ã¢ÂÂblind spotÃ¢ÂÂ range being monitored, a yellow warning symbol appears on the outside mirror on that side of the car. If you signal a lane change while a car is detected in the blind spot, a warning alarm sounds and a red warning light flashes in the instrument panel. The benefit of a BSM is that it lets you know if a vehicle is in the blind spot on either side at all times, so youÃ¢ÂÂre aware of your surroundings. Oh, no way, a failure by you, someone who's helping folks in your spare time?! No way! (I hope you were joking.) By "not a single person mentioned", I meant like installers when they came to give estimates, not anyone here. No trouble, it's all a learning experience. Yes, I had a media cabinet installed, but it was a Honeywell. I couldn't convince my installer to get the official Ruud cabinet. I wouldn't even call the condensate issue a failure necessarily by my installer, because he is right that my sump pump should work in freezing weather. Just these furnaces still aren't common in my area, so I'm surprised there aren't more words of caution out there. (In fact, my emergency handyman who came out that night cause I thought something had burst -- services rental properties as his full-time job -- turned to me and said "I haven't seen this before but your furnace is discharging water.") My installer is considering a condensate pump and there's a slight issue where the outdoor temp isn't being read. But overall, I'm super happy with my 96% Ruud and EcoNet thermostat. The thermostat tells me whether it's running high or low stage, I've been told I'm spending too much time with it. I can't thank everyone here enough. In the end, I was able to find a great HVAC team. It's been quite the adventure. I'll post pictures soon. The duct work is a masterpiece, everything was turned 90 degrees because otherwise code required I create a service opening in the wall.

Most likely your AC system is low due to a leak and the compressor is short cycling from your description. Anyhow if you really want to attempt a repair yourself you should invest in a GOOD set of R134a refrigerant guages so you can see the High side and Low side internal system pressures Purchase a automotive air conditioning repair book and read it until you completely understand all the details. With a real set of guages and some good basic knowledge you will be able to quickly and accurately diagnose/repair your R134a AC system.

his A.C. system does not have a leak. He has an electrical
problem. i bet his engine fan doesn't come on either when
the A.C. is switched on. sorry but i'm not telling you what
is wrong with this system. Some one could get hurt or the car could be damaged. Sorry.

The A/C relay on your Honda, like most vehicles today, is computer controlled. The relay will have electrical power at two terminals of the relay with the key on and power at only one terminal with the key off. If there is no electrical power present at the relay, then you have to inspect the fuses. There are two fuses for the relay. One can be found in the under dash fuse panel. It will be a 7.5 amp fuse and will be located in position #6 of the fuse panel labeled A/C clutch relay/cooling fan relay. The other fuse is located in the under hood relay and fuse box. This is a 15 amp fuse and will be in position # 34 and labeled condenser/fan. If both fuses are good and there is electrical power to two of the terminals at the A/C compressor clutch relay, then you have a control problem. It could be as simple as a bad relay or the A/C system is low in charge. The A/C system has a pressure switch that stops the operation of the A/C compressor if the charge of refrigerant in the system becomes inadequate, too low. This is done to prevent damage to the compressor. To diagnose a control problem will require more specialized equipment, higher level of training and knowledge for diagnosis. At this point I would suggest that you involve a repair facility to perform this diagnosis.

Wow, kalining, you're kind of a dick, huh?

I have a similar problem--pressure on the low side was fine when I checked it, actually a little too high. Compressor kicks on just fine, but system blows hot air. Any ideas? I know this post is almost 2 years old, but I thought I'd ask just in case someone is still listening...

I know this is an old post, but my car was having similar issues a few years ago. I replaced the relay (looks like a car fuse) which is in a corner in the hood. I have a 2003 Toyota Camry and same issues. Car was blowing only hot air and would not cool. I spent 6 hours researching online and spent $19.00 on the part and have not had a problem since.

Best of Luck.. You can always take to a repair place but don't be afraid to try.

my 1999 Accord A/C cabin fan will not blow at all until I drive about ten miles then comes on and works fine. I had only low speed so I replaced the Blower fan resistor and now I have all 4 speeds but still have this problem with fan not working at all at first. I can't understand it this Honda only has 233,000 miles on it.
