LEDs don't have the same amount of light. If you need light, you should stay with the bulbs that you have. I realize that most of the time you will need the light. However, there are times when you can dim them down. This not only helps to cool off the area, but also extends the life of the bulb. LEDs are not the answer as they will not give you anywhere near the light that you now have. Not knowing the track system that you have makes it difficult to make recommendations. However, if your bulbs have a black or really silver back that pushes the light out of the front of the bulb, you can probably change to a different type of MR16 that will lessen (not much) the amount of heat being felt. If this track system was not a set (bought completely together in a package), you can check on different heads that use different type of halogen lamps. Did not touch bulbs with bare hands but used a piece of white paper towel--did that ruin the bulb? The area where the fixture is located is very difficult to reach & I did hold the wrapped bulb for more than 2 minutes on each bulb. There are no identifying numbers on the old bulbs or the new ones just the 12 volt 18 watt. But on the packing slip it states the what the bulbs are & uses the 9774 #. I googled the number and saw that there is a 9775 as well but no discription on color of light.

If these are to be left on for long periods of time, I'd tend to side with your husband. The light from xenons is very nice, but heat inevitably goes with it. It sounds as if the contents of these cabinets could be delicate and/or precious to you. You'd have to ask a conservator to know for sure what these materials can tolerate, but fluorescents would be a safer choice.

Jess, I had done a fair amount of reading about the undercabinet lighting a while back but my brain being what it is lately, I cannot remember the specifics. I did just do a search on the lighting forum for undercabinet and then one for puck and brought up many posts. I am glad you didn't have any more grief with your halogens- they scare me and I would not use them period (Even though I do remember they give off great light)--- I think that flourescents seem to be the favorite with little downside other than perhaps the cosmetics - but then again, who needs a house burning down. I did look at some LED and they were just not very bright. THings might have changed some, but that is my recollection. Keep us posted and good luck.
