Timing Belt

I have a 2001 Toyota Sienna,that I bought new,it now has 88,000 miles,on it.I have kept up with the maintance and kept a log in the owner manual,since new.The only thing I have had done was have the fluids change,no real problems,still runs good,my question is the maintance book says to change the timing belt at 90,000 should I have the belt change or not,if not would it cause serious damage to the engine.This is the first time the maintance cause for this.I have a friend that has a 98 model he has change his three times,his book shows to change it at 60,00 miles.Any thoughts.

if it goes, it will trash the top end of the engine, big bucks!! now if your willing to gamble, most likely you can get another 20 to 30 thousand miles from it. now me i would let it go, but after 100k i dont care, i`ll just buy another car. so if buying another car is no big deal, gamble and let it go, if not, you better replace it. your call.

Take a look at the belt if there is a area you can see it from the cover being in the way?Use a light to see the condition if there are any cracks better replace it.I passed up a chance at a used Ford Ranger pickup truck awhile back after noticing cracks in the belt.

I think something is awry if you had a failure in such a short time. If the blades were loose enough to strike - off goes your timing right there. The tensioning part really isn't difficult in itself. After I set tension, I roll the spindles around a few times and loosen the tensioner pulley a turn and make sure the tension is correct - then resecure the nut. The barrel like guide should be in place and facing the correct way. If you watch the rotation of the deck- are the blades on the proper sides? Is there reason to suspect wear on the slide area or the cone? It sounds like you are saying that someone else did the work prior. Loosen the idler as far as you have to to roll a spindle inside the belt to get it back in time and then follow your bulletin and all should be fine if the rest looks as it should. Use the JD parts look up as a guide.

A couple years ago JD made the belts stronger. I doubt anyone else would offer such a belt as they are not a high volume item. The belt is designed to be the fuse in the system, so it does break before something more expensive else gets bent, like the deck shell. Honestly, mowing a 4-acre field with rocks is beyond what an LT155 with a Freedom was designed to do. An LT155 is a 1.5 acre max machine, and the Freedom 42 is for manicured lawns only. Just not the best fit there. The only downside of the Freedom 42 is that early on JD and dealers didn't do the best job of qualifying what customers should or shouldn't have them. There may be some of those first gen LT's starting to die out there now, so keep your eyes open for a used 38" deck from a LT133 or LT155. That might work well for you.

On older cars it is not as much but the newer cars are built so that half of the parts under the hood have to come out. 1995 Pontiac Grand Am water pump replacement, $847.00. If the belt breaks it will make $1000.00 look cheap.

Thanks for the response. Are you talking about the "Timing Belt" - which is the belt that you cannot see. Or are you talking about the Air Conditioner and Alternator Belts, which are the ones you can see. If you are talking about the Timing Belt, do we have to take out all the parts again, to readjust the tension? THANKS

Replace the timing belt - Don't gamble on this.

If you decide to trade the vehicle at 100,000 miles, it will be worth more with a replaced belt than trying to sell it with a trashed engine.

[A few overhead cam engines are free turning - pistons won't hit the valves if the belt breaks. I don't take a chance on this until I know for sure; Always assume the pistons will hit the valves until proven otherwise.]

The boys are giving you some good advice, if the engine is one with a certain clearence setup and the timing belt goes it will definitely trash the valve system and who knows what else on the engine, the repair will cost big bucks, replacing the timing belt is a smart move.
