Truck Rear Window Replacement

My 01 Dakota rear window got shattered by a loosened cargo on the bed that I was carrying. A dealer is quoting me total of $700 for parts (sliding type) & labor.

Is the rear window replacement on a truck much different or more difficult than the front windshield?

I dont know about Dodge but my Ford window would unbolt fron the inside. Check with you local auto glass company. They are generally much less expensive.

OK, I will check for any bolts holding the rear window. It appeared it's only glued on.
By the way, I found a web store selling a slidingr rear wondow for only $200... hopefully a good quality one.

**Frankly IMO until a car company offers these behemoths with a hybrid engine offering close to 30 mpg , I don't think anything has changed at all . A big truck is a big truck** Ditto. I'm not so easilly impressed. Whoever invented the current engine management systems around 1980 that did away with the carburetor and precisely maintains the air fuel ratio through all conditions earns a phrase like 'changing it all'. Overhead cam has been around forever. More holes cast in the head for more valves ranks up there with drilling more holes or installing more lengths of metering rods in a carburetor to meter fuel, zzzzZZZZzzzzZZZZzzzz. The first company that comes up with the vehicle that has the same capacity as the 'push rod' engine, while getting significantly higher mpg, or better yet, doesn't use gas or diesel at all, will get my vote for 'the truck that's changing it all' title. I won't care who builds it first. Till then, we're just talking about more stuff as important as electric butt warming seats and headlights that come on and dim automatically, ect. Big deal.

I agree with Mike K, it's simply an itemization of a cost of doing business, apparently so the customer can appreciate it more. Frankly, I wouldn't care if he had a "get out of bed in the morning" charge as long as the overall price was right and I had confidence in his work. I would focus my attention on what he says he will be doing, and perhaps how, and what materials he will use, and prior customers opinions of his work and methods. I think he probably decided to break out the truck do to all the publicity of higher gas prices, perhaps hoping customers would think "oh yeah, that's gotta be expensive, all that driving around".

While the wood is rotted there and might look okay elsewhere, I would choose a window as if you were planning to replace all of the units. An unclad, builders grade, wood window is going to give out in the not to distant future. If they are 20 years old (guesstimate), you are lucky and and you won't be in 5 - 10 years. You are seeing what is referred to as a swiggle spacer seal failure and while location and exposure can speed up the process, you are going to start seeing more with each passing year. If you look at this project from a onsie - twosie standpoint, you could wind up selecting a window at a price point that you won't much like when you are faced with more. As far as the product, the Architect isn't a bad window by any stretch. I'm not a fan of roll formed cladding when there are better options, but it is still an okay unit.

I would evaluate the condition of the windows you want to put storms on. If they are poor it would not make sense to invest in a storm on them only to replace the window 5 years later. A quality storm window, especially black is not cheap to do either.You may want to live with odd looks for a few years vs dumping money into a a maybe tempory solution that you will redo in a fee years. Restoration with storms is a goood option also. Black is trendy but I don’t always see it meshing with a bungelow. you need an overall plan even though its not gonna all be done all at once.

One time I had to bash in the sliding window of one of my trucks because I got locked out in a deserted place. It was a long time ago and don't really remember what it cost but I know it didn't cost $700. I took it to harmon or one of those glass shops and watched as they took out the whole rear window then dook out the sliding part and put in a new sheet of glass. It was a lot more labor than I thougt but I know I wasn't all that upset because it wasn't much. Maybe $50-$100 somewhere in there.

My hubby was thinking of going from Ford to Dodge when he saw how cheap the inside was he decided to stay with Ford.....
