Whining after new Power Steering Hose Installed

1990 Nissan Maxima had a leak in the power steering hose. Ever since I had a new power steering hose put in by my mechanic, I have heard a continuous whining sound, which changes pitch when turning the steering wheel (even if stopped with engine running). It doesn't seem to affect anything but is annoying. The hose was not from Nissan (which cost about 3 times more) but one from an auto parts store. I think it looked to be a bit smaller diameter hose than the original.

Check the belt and check to see that all the air has been purged from the system.
When the man does this job, he should check things completely(or the best he can) and make notes on the paperwork and discuss these things with the owner.

Another thing I note, aftermarket parts are so much cheaper.
This should not be, IMO.
Of course high quality must be more expensive, but three times the cost ???

BTW, check the price of a 15 amp outlet and compare that to a 20 amp outlet(they almost look to be identical, but I know they are not).

I'm guessing that the original hose was good for 15 years(excellent) and that the cheap, thinner hose may last but 5 years, which is probably acceptable as well.
Cars do seem to last, a Buick should do as well.

Check the fluid level in the power steering reservoir. Low fluid level can allow air to be stirred into the pump which can cause a whinning noise.

If the fluid is not low, then the new hose may be radiating or transmitting more noise than the older hose.

Butch, I'm no JD expert but I'm willing to guess that the 420 has hydraulic lift for the mower deck and auxilliary hydraulic circuits also. If so, then it will be equipped with a hydraulic pump to look after all these things, including the power steering. The hydrostatic pump will be used exclusively to drive the tractor in forward and reverse and has nothing to do with the other hydraulic circuits. In order to put power steering on your Massey, you will have to add a pump. The easiest way to do this would be to install a belt driven pump from a car. Connecting it all up isn't very difficult. The hydrostatic control module that you will be fitting your steering wheel to, should have four connections on the bottom of it. One connection goes to the pressure side of the power steering pump and the other one to the return side. The other two lines go to the steering cylinder. If the tractor turns left when you turn the wheel right, just switch the two steering cylinder lines at the control module. BTW, what did all of that cost you?

Safety Issue After Sears Installation

Last August, we had a new pair of Kenmore front-loading washer/dryers installed by the Sears deliverymen. When finished, they gave me a plastic bag of owners manuals and what I thought were extra, un-needed parts. By that day I had over a week of dirty laundry waiting to be washed, so I stupidly stored away the bag and started the laundry. Two weeks later while doing more laundry, I heard the sound of gushing water. I ran into the laundry room to see the drain hose twisting around in the air, spurting out water. (Which ended up in my basement, ruining a spare computer). Apparently, the delivery people failed to secure the drain hose with the plastic part that was still in that plastic bag! I wish the guys would have at least mentioned to me about the part, but they said nothing. Since I signed off on the delivery, Sears would not even re-imburse my $65 delivery fee. So, beware and be wary of any delivery/installation.

I would recommend getting a mold expert in there - it's nothing to mess around with. Too many builders take shortcuts with flashing and drainage planes. Your house is just about the right age for these things to start rearing their ugly heads. We had to tear the entire exterior of our house off due to water intrusion - and it wasn't even done being built! What we found under the siding was lots of mold trapped between the Tyvek and the sheathing and dry rotted studs. A mold expert can help you figure it out. Don't delay - if let go too long it could end up costing more than the house is worth to fix. I know many people who have had to move out of their homes due to mold. It was even recommended to us that we burn our house down (we got a second opinion on that one). No, keep the air gap because it's safer from a sanitation perspective than using a high loop. Do you see the tube (or spout) coming off of the garbage disposal in your photo? It's just above the waste drain coming off of your garbage disposal. That hose from the air gap should connect to that tube (or spout) coming off of the garbage disposal. Just make sure you unplug the electric cord for the garbage disposal and then use a hammer and a long screw driver and tap, tap, tap.....knock out the plug inside of the tube so the water from the dishwasher can flow into the garbage disposal. After you knock out the metal plug, then double check to make sure you unplugged the power to the garbage disposal before you reach your hand in and pull out the metal plug that you knocked out of the tube. It's very easy to do and not a big deal. Then connect the hose so it runs from the air gap to that tube on the garbage disposal and use a hose clamp to tighten the hose to the tube. That's how I have mine set up and it works fine. I installed my own air gap and also installed my garbage disposal and, as part of that process, I had to go to a plumbing supply store to pick up the right size hose to run from the air gap to the tube coming off of the garbage disposal. Maybe the hose you already have coming off of the air gap will work fine though. Did you take it back to your mechanic and let him listen to it? If so what did he think the problem was? If the system is low on fluid it could burn the pump. Is the new hose laying up against something that would transmit the sound you are hearing? Those hoses will move when there is pressure applied to them. And if they are touching shields, sheet metal, brake lines etc. They will moan and groan.

Bumping! When I had a problem with the power steering hose, I never had the chance to fix it or bring it to the dealer.. just replaced it.. it cost me much.. But it would be great to have manuals for that.. I hope it wont happen again..
