I mentioned the S-10 with the theft deterrent problem in a different post. At one point the guy wanted me to "bypass" the system. Of course I wont do that I told him, it's better to simply fix it, or else I'm done. It turns out the TSB that applied for the harness repair, and removing a resistor that someone wired in attempting to bypass the Passlock system was the final repair for the theft deterrent.

The truck also has an ABS lamp coming on, the LF wheel speed sensor is erratic. This morning was the third time we talked, during the conversation the owner talked about how he had taken this truck back to the Toyota dealer they bought the truck at, a GM dealer, and at least five other shops and none of these places were able to solve the problems his truck has. It didn't matter if they were shade tree guys that looked at it, or great techs none of them could solve the problems. I asked him if I have lived up to his expectations, by solving the trouble and then he says, "we were trying to avoid paying to have it fixed".

Or at least something along that idea.

Oh well, fixing the car right isn't good enough, I have to do it for free. Guess he won't ever bring another car in.

My sympathies, John.

It's the same when I sell a car with no warranty on it. They come back with some little problem and I have it fixed. They come back with another little problem; I try to work it out the best way I can.
It ends when they finally blow up at me for reminding them the vehicle was sold with no warranty, after they realize they want a new car at a used-car price.

A number of times, the boss will tell me to just give them their money back----you can forget it by then---He** will freze over first, after what they've put me through because the car wasn't perfect!
BTW, I ALWAYS encourage customers to have the car checked out by a reliable mechanic before they buy it...

After days like that, I dump a little Amaretto in my hot tea when I get home that night! :o)

Got you all beat. Good thing you don't live in farm country. A guy brought me a lawnmower with the carb in a plastic bag with half the parts missing. Well i put it together and used my parts. He said how much. I told him
forget it and we can do some horse trading when i need something from you. He insisted i take some money. I said fine $20.00. He then proceded to almost fall off the back of his truck with a look of shock on his face. Go figure.
Take it to the city and see what they charge you. Plus the
cost of your gas. The one thing that boggles my mind is
people out here, probably other places too, will give you
a $40.00 bottle of Whisky but pass out when you ask for $20.00 and they don't even help you drink it. I don't know.
Funny people i guess.

Well, we're getting 3/4" solids instead of engineered (at least that's the current plan) ... and the old-school wood floor installer I like best recommended something like 3 weeks of acclimation because we're in a somewhat humid niche of California .... but the job estimator from a major renovation/restoration company that Allstate sent out said four or five weeks even. You may be getting a straight answer from the installers who've had no problem before ... BUT it's certainly not by the book and this is not the kind of thing where I'd personally want to deviate from the book. (So many other things are important too like how good the installers are at lining things up and making the right decisions about where pieces of what length look best etc.)

kashka kat, Thanks for starting this conversation. I am in the same boat. Interested in a small neighborhood that has gotten hot in recent months. Red hot. This (little) market is moving so fast that properties never make it onto Trulia or Zillow or the MLS feeds. And the listing company doesn't even get a picture up on their own site, nor a sign in the yard. I have informed several agents we are cash buyers, no mortgage or appraisal contingencies, flexible on closing date, etc. Tip me on a property and you can show it to me, but if I find it myself I will deal directly with the selling agent. Last Thursday morning a realtor tipped me on a new listing but she couldn't show it to me until the next day. When I walked by there was an agent at the property fnishing a showing & willing to show it to me, but I declined out of loyalty to the agent who tipped me to it. The place went under contract that night, so I missed out. As with one a few weeks ago, I probably would have made a better offer than the llc flipper had I had the chance to see the place and make an offer. I don't see how committing (written contract) to one buyer's agent would help in this situation. Properties don't seem to get outside the listing agency before they are snapped up. A buyer's agent wouldn't know about 'in house' listings except in their own 'house', right? So that won't help. Hmmmm. I'm thinking it's best to just keep being clear with as many agents as I can what I am looking for and that I am a ready buyer. Am I missing something?

The trouble with "rules" in general is that they tend to be a little "one size fits all." They are useful to know, and I broke the ones I broke, knowingly, and after a lot of consideration. I have never understood the 15" seating overhang guideline, but it must be made for long-legged people who really like to belly up to the counter. That's not us, we measured what we have and found 12" to be plenty, even though we are not short. Some people really want to unload the dishwasher without moving their feet, so dish storage near the DW is important. We are used to a more "point of use" dish storage system, so the coffee stuff is in one place, the dinner dishes another, the breakfast dishes another (not that any are very far away.) I unload the dishwasher maybe 3 times a week, so it just isn't that big of a deal. Maybe it is if you do it twice a day, though! Our fridge is at the end of our U-shaped kitchen. With a large family or even a few kids + friends running in and out, that could be a disaster. In a retirement home for 2, it's fine. (Obstacles to easy access to the fridge for snacks are probably a good thing at this point!) Plus I don't want to see the fridge from the LR, pretty as it is. And we could have had an island instead of a peninsula, but we didn't really want it THAT open to the living area. And you can't get into the dishwasher and the freezer drawers at the same time, but that seemed to be a conflict we could live with. I am a person who has to know the details of the "why" before I will follow a rule. Then I see if I think it fits before I decide whether to follow it. The list of advice I took to heart is a much longer list, though! Much longer.

If this was its first winter, then I suspect the culprit is cold damage. You are located in an area where Japanese maples are of borderline winter hardiness, you experienced what is the equivalent of a zone 4 winter this past season and Shishigashira is not considered to be as cold tolerant as some other JM's. Most authorities only list it to zone 6. I also have some concern about the planter box. In the last photo, it looks like the planter is resting on heavy duty landscape fabric and not in direct contact with the underlying soil. Is this why the tree was planted high? Not enough depth for the rootball? And no winter mulch? This definitely could have been a contributing factor. Need more details on the planter itself before suggesting whether replanting another tree makes sense.

I just wish I knew someone around here that had your diagnostic capability.

There's a shop I go to, but I don't know any of the guys that work there. Could be different people every time I go for all I know. That being the case, I'm afraid it'll still be a crap shoot if I have some special technology related problem.

Why in the world would anyone want to steal an S-10 in the first place? Seems like a waste of electronics and your time of course. I say take him up in front of Judge Judy!
