A small San Diego company is playing a big role in reducing air pollution in Beijing as China clears the air for the 2008 Olympics

IN THREE YEARS, when athletes from around the world descend on Beijing for the 2008 Olympics, they can thank a San Diego company for the cleaner air filling their lungs. The same holds true for Shanghai, host of soccers World Cup in 2010.

The cleaner air will be due in large part to a fuel additive produced by Ethos Environmental Inc., near the Mexico border in San Diego.

Ethos EnvironmentalÂs fuel reformulating products reduce emissions by burning fuel more completely, which improves fuel mileage. Exhaust is essentially unburned fuel, wasted fuel, so when the fuel is used more completely the engine delivers better mileage from every tank. Efficient fuel use also means improved engine performance, because a more complete combustion process obtains increased power from each engine revolution.

In the last decade hundreds of millions of miles in road tests have been conducted. Test after test, Ethos FR products have proven to reduce engine exhaust emissions by 30% and more, including measurable reductions in the emissions of hydrocarbons (HC), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and sooty exhaust or particulate matter (PM). All of these emissions are highly toxic. As a result, fuel mileage increases have been significant, ranging from 7% to 19% fleet we.

Ethos Environmental uses a opacity meter, a detection device for diesel vehicles that measures the percentage of opacity (light obstructed form passage through an exhaust smoke plume), to demonstrate dramatic reductions in emissions. In more that 1,000 heavy-duty diesel vehicles treated (a motor vehicle having a manufacturerÂs maximum gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) greater than 6,000 pounds), emissions were lowered by as much as 90%. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) recommended practice SAE J1667 "Snap Acceleration Smoke Test Procedure" for heavy-duty diesel powered vehicles was used. Attached are samples of opacity test sheets, taken from diesel-powered engines, contrasting the positive results after using Ethos FR.

You can get all your friends and neighbors to have this product in their cars and just like the 1,000 mile per gallon carburetor that was BANNED by the oil companies, you can thumb your nose at the local Exxon station!
This guy claims a fuel savings of 7 to 19 percent. So it's probably closer to the mid range. So we'll take the average of his claims. 13 percent savings. My Expedition gets 19 MPG on the highway. So we'll add 13% increase. WOW WEE! It'll get 21.4 MPG! My Dakota gets 14 MPG. So add 13% and I'll get 15.8! If this product sells for under $3 I might consider it. Otherwise the gas is cheaper. And if I have to add it every time I fill up.....

OK, it's easy to get excited about something when there is no apparent reason to suspect that it may be a scam. Gasoline and Diesel fuel are actually both blends of lots of different hydrocarbon chemicals. Thats just one of the reasons we have computer controls that provide instant adjustment of air fuel ratio's and timing curves. Oh, and yes today's diesels are computer contolled we simply have to wait for the fleet to age and pass before the majority of diesels are computer controlled.

IMO, no additive dumped in a fuel tank is going to make a significant improvement in the efficiency, and cleanliness of the older designs. No additive is going to improve today's automobiles.

What you described about getting people into this "investment" has all of the appearance of a classic pyramid scheme. The only guarantee's about that are a few people will get some money, and some of them will return it (or at least some of it) under the threat of prosecution. Many will lose their "investment". Pyramid schemes are illegal, and for good reason. If there was any merit to this product, they would have no short list of people (with big bucks) interested in investing, and they wouldn't be looking for the "little guy".

Hogwash. People drive the economy with demand. If people wanted cleaner more efficient America they would demand and get it. People hold the money and the big business wants it, to include the oil companies. The absolute primary reason we dont have a better option to power our world is because we demand the high performance, gas guzzling gigantic automobiles and trucks to haul our two children and all thier expensive toys. We are spoiled rotten to the core and blow energy resources like there is no tomorrow. But lawn mowers are not the way to clean air for our country and definitely not the great energy wasters of our time. America needs to learn how to go back to simpler forms of entertainment and learn contentment with fewer energy wasting toys. Get back on track with fuel efficient transportation and CLEAN UP THOSE SMOG LOVING FACTORIES! BUT what will it cost us besides money and a few toys? Well for one thing we will no longer have a problem with illegal immigrants, as there will be no more factories to leave us smog, no more jobs to fight over, and eventually no more America because we are willing and ready to keep buying products made all around the world where they dont give a tinkerers DAMN about the ecology, air polution, water and land polution, or worker safety, and especially dont give a damn about you Americans or your children! Keep on buying those cheap products specially designed to run in America, except most of us are going to be clawing around to find a way to buy food instead and only the elite rich will be buying. That is until the little guy finally gets fed up with being bottom feeders to the elite and they revolt and take their country back. Pity our poor children as we are rapidly digging them a hole they will never dig out of. America is becoming a cesspool and so many of us are not fighting it, just jumping in and swimming along with the rest of the lemmings! Good luck!

I bought a 1995 Acura Legend in 1998 with 32,000 miles on it. It was a 36-month lease turn-in and was literally in PERFECT condition. It sat unsold on the Acura dealerâs used lot because it was the least expensive model, the L 4-door, with cloth interior and 5-speed manual transmission. But it was exactly what I wanted, White with Taupe interior, Bose stereo, Power seats with memory and (the best part) the sweetest 200hp 3.2L V6 Iâve ever experienced! I paid $26,000 out-the-door, which felt like a fortune at the time (I was 23). I drove it 40-50k miles per year until I was t-boned by a commercial truck in August 2005. It had just turned 329,000 miles at the time and didnât burn a drop of oil (synthetic), the clutch had only been replaced once and the transmission shifted like new. Other than scheduled maintenance, the only thing I ever had to replace was the A/C compressor and two ABS sensors. The impact was so hard the passenger-side door panel ended up breaking my right hand and forearm (it was in the middle of the car). The rearview mirror broke loose during the crash and hit me in the head just above my right ear. It left most of the glass mirror fragments in my head and took 38 staples to close the wound! I also had damage to two discs in my cervical spine that required a 3-level c-spine fusion the following year. But I was able to recover from all of those injuries, which was pretty amazing considering how bad my poor Legend looked. I bought a 2006 Mazda3 Hatchback to replace it in December 2005. Eight years later, Iâm just past 190,000 miles and going strong!

"Depends" Jerry. Decel fuel cut-off is a very common strategy that even existed in carbureted cars (First one I can think of was Ford Escort 1980). When all we had were carbs, decel caused an extremely rich air/fuel ratio and wasted a lot of fuel while simply releasing most of it to the atmosphere right through the engines tailpipe. So they added fuel cut solenoids to shut the idle circuit down during deceleration. Once we had fuel injection interrupting the injector circuit operation was easy to reduce decel fuel waste, and that is standard across the board with every manufacturer. It's use allows for better catalytic convertor operation as well. Very rich fuel ratios deplete the catalyst of stored O2 and in effect turn them off. Combine that with an additional clutch in the transmission that allows for reduced, if not eliminated engine braking when in overdrive and the engineers are attempting to out gain the benefits of even coasting in neutral and not from just a fuel mileage consideration, but an emissions consideration as well. Today's hybrid vehicles are noted for not having any engine braking at all on certain models. In fact once they go into regenerative braking, and if the battery is sufficiently charged they will rely totally on the mechanical brakes to slow the car down unless "B mode" is used. "B mode" is known as mountain braking and uses the electric motors to fight each other to produce the effect of engine braking. You have to study engine control dynamics to see exactly what compression numbers occur during different engine operating conditions, but as far as the argument that you are burning fuel during a strong decel, "There isn't enough compression to properly burn any fuel that gets into the cylinders" once the manifold vacuum reaches a high enough value. So most of the fuel getting to the cylinders simply gets pumped to the exhaust, which quite often would resulted in a pretty loud backfire. Use the lack of such an occurrance, that cars don't back fire out the exhaust like they used to as part of the proof.

eld, a few reactions to your comment. First, if you don't drive much in traffic or with stop and go conditions, it won't do much for you. Many people do drive in situations like that, especially those who commute to work in urban locations. Cars burn gas when idling so whatever is saved is more than nothing. It's low hanging fruit, the feature is cheap and will help and can't hurt. Second, it was developed in Europe, where auto engineers have been focused for years on wringing more performance and more efficiency out of engines. I have a few year old, not small German car with an engine that's maybe half the size of what was put in the same model a dozen years ago. It gets amazing mileage, in the high 20s in town and mid to high 30s on flat highways (at highway speeds). With a turbocharger, it's very fast and responsive at lower speeds. When I lived in Europe a few decades ago, I remember that when stopped for other than a short interval - a draw bridge, a level train crossing, a long signal- drivers turned off their engines. The start stop feature does that automatically for those who, like you and me, appreciate not having to think about it. It's not a big deal but I think it's a thoughtful one.

And it contains mis-statements. Take for example the quote below:

Exhaust of a properly running engine is pricipally the products of burned fuel, a small amount of unburned fuel and hot air, a lot of hot air. Most of the small amount of unburned fuel get oxidized in the catalytic converter, so at the tail pipe, there's not much unburned fuel.

It's ashame people have to push unproven merchandise. Anyway, for those that want to just discuss fuel savings including saving gas at the pump, I found an interesting fuel savings talk forum. It looks like its new, but has a lot of fuel talk categories. They aren't selling anything, only a message board as we used to call them.
