How does stress affect you?

I have been having pain in my feet and hands and wrists...each lasting maybe a day or two, leaving behind a bit of stiffness. But it keeps coming back SOMEwhere and it does not seem to in the same spot. Last night it was at the top of my arm, almost to the shoulder, maybe a tendon??? I have trouble sleeping if I can't get comfortable. DOes this sound like stress? My DH thinks it's stress as a result of dealing with my elderly parents and their meds. appts and infirmities...there's always some sort of tangle at their house. How does stress affect YOU?

It could definitely be stress -- your muscles could be involuntarily tensing up. Have you been to the doctor?

One thing that causes this type of pain is a B12 deficency. It's rather hard to diagnose as it's a matter of eliminating everything else, then giving a round of B12 injections. If it is a deficency, improvement will be seen within a few injections. B12 by pill doesn't work as the body has have some sort of bacteria in the intestinal tract to convert it so it can be used . Ask your doctor. But, to answer your question.....yes it could be stress, but the fact that it jumps around, I would think B12.

I have 3 totems that have been outside since (and during) Hurricane Ivan (2004). The rest are still inside.My plastic softballs covered with flat marbles have been outside almost as long. They are a little rusty on the bottom because they sit on a 5-place candle holder. The red white and lt blue ones are still good. The copper windchimes are brownish--for some reason they don't turn verdigris here-just brown. The wheelbarrow tires are flat-oh well! Some of my colorful BowlingBalls that I left 'naked' have cracked from the summers heat. The orangey one on the lamp base was hit by the van that come through the fence (BB was ok). There are no new pictures on my web site--DD just can't seem to find the time to post. The fiberglass boat has lost it's wooden seats and is beginning to crack slightly. I took my metal sphere down last year to re-paint (but haven't) and now I don't know where I put the eye-bolts that hold it together. My first plate flower was plastic, and it cracked this year. The paint has also faded on the golf cart tire rims. The plastic plate that I shaped in the oven that was a butterfly 'feeder' also fell apart this year. The pvc pipe can be reused. I have made some new totems (9) and some teacup birdfeeders(23) and patio light wine bottles (10) and have sold some, but have NOT put anything new in the garden lately. I do a lot of one pot dishes, meat and potatoes, stroganof, bean soup with ham, spagetti, etc., then after working to make lovely (and very high calorie food) I grind it all up in a food processor. No matter what the food, it always appears to be something gray with butter in the end (or red if it's spagetti). So I wanted lots of counter space for prep, a huge range to cook in and on, and somewhere to keep the food processor busy while grinding and cooking. Then I package it all up in 6oz packages and freeze it. This is all for DS...I don't normally cook our family meals (DH is a fabulous cook). I never envisioned myself grinding and freezing food LOL if anyone knew I'd lose my "Amatuer chef of the year" award from the mid 80's...I wonder if I could grind up a cheesecake...heh heh DH does all of the cooking when we entertain and for our family dinners. We planned the kitchen so that he could work efficiently, with a stainless counter run between the main sink and stove. That huge stove, with appropriate hood so he can stirfry, and prep space behind him to work on vegis while meat is happening on the stainless side. On the other side of the island we have a sink, and two counters. They're sort of "my" zone when we entertain, for appetizer prep, salad prep, and landing zones for dishes between courses. Our sink and DW are lined up with the main dish/silver storage, so that some day, when DS becomes useful, he can put away dishes or set the table without being in DH's way. The fridge is between the two zones so that we can both access it easily. So far it flows very well. We made our isles bigger than they were (they were about 29" wide prior) and planned appliances that don't fill the isles when open. Dish and food storage is planned based on when it's used and how, so that they're close to the functions that make sense (ie wine glasses and decanters are close to the dining room door since we tend to use a lot of them during parties). But no matter how well we planned...we couldn't increase the size of the kitchen, so after a dinner party for six...it all looks pretty much like this LOL: I was half way through cleaning up when I took those pics LOL we really do make a mess, and having lots of counters to toss it on between courses was a big deal to us.

I went with the plain glass, i.e., not low E. I'm a happy camper. It's like having a new window. The light in my room is so utterly changed that I'll walk into the living room and think I've left the door wide open. It's everything I hoped it would be. I do have a conventional screen door that's always in place, since I like to open my door for fresh air when it's warm enough to do so. So the screen somewhat effects the light, but one's eyes adjust to that. I've ordered a custom roller shade, as I need the privacy at night. Currently I have a long piece of craft paper that I hang with blue tape every night and take down in the morning. Yesterday it was almost 100 here and the late afternoon sun was brutal. I was too lazy to put the faux shade up. Here's the difference. It will really make a difference in the winter when it's too cold to have the door open. The screen door is all screen, no glass. herbflavor, We bought the place because it was all that we could afford at the time without a mortgage, and the housing crisis of 2008 was still fresh on my mind and I absolutely did not want a mortgage, and still don't. We could have qualified for one but we didn't want one. Our next house will also be paid for in cash but it's going to be our "forever" home and we are projecting that its going to cost 200k. DH owns a business, and now I also own a business. Both our businesses do well. We are not rich. We are middle class. But we will not get a mortgage; we are very debt-averse. -------------------------- homechef59: "I'm going to continue with the wall extension for the refrigerator. You said the refrigerator would be too big and stick out. So, frame the wall with an L-shape into the dining room just far enough to make the refrigerator sit flush with the line of cabinets. Just trying to keep a lid on costs and get you some improvements." We believe debt is something you do when things are more certain, and given the state of the economy and world affairs we are very far away from the kind of comfort level that would draw us to a mortgage. I suppose that wraps up this particular thread. I'll post a new one with a much more accurate to-scale sketch of the kitchen, dining and laundry floorplan so it can be hashed out better. Ginnier, stress can either exacerbate a problem you have or it can cause problems. For me, it always affects me as pain, either in my muscles or tendons or joints, or all three; mainly in my lower back, hips and legs. It also affects my sleep, which in turn, causes more pain. The less stress I have, the better I feel physically. The best way I deal with stress is with exercise, but there are times that I am so stressed that I'm too exhausted to exercise, so it's kind of a vicious cycle. I hope you can find a way to de-stress and feel better,

Well, i think everyone knows that i get migraines! the kind where i get so sick it's not even funny and i literally sleep on an ice blanket! i can't sleep sometimes and i also get soreness, or i get so tired i sleep all day! but i still have to get up and give insulin and meds. i'm still gieving over our little one "Buddy" and i'm so short with everyone here that i want to just be left alone, which is not like me, i also don't have any interest in my hobbies lately. Al's sister came by yesterday and she got him depressed and stressed too, he was not impressed by not being included in packing up his mother's belongings, e said he lost his legs not his mind or anythinh else, he was also stressed that his sister only brought over 2 dinner bells and a fancy tea pot, even though he said he didn't want anything. he also found out that the sisters put their mothers things in storage, no reason why this was done, he figured they are going to have a yard sale come spring to pay for her funeral. he also made the rude comment, when this is all over, we don't have to bother with any of them anymore. i know they are not close, but coming from his mouth i knew he was so hurt to be excluded and he never gets mad at anyone, infact i think i've heard him only yell once, so because of this he has not slept and has sprayed himself with alot of nitro spray.

stress affects each of us in different ways...

sleeplessness, appetite issues, muscle tension, headaches, tummy troubles, arthritic symptoms...

in general, stress is just that. more weight on a system that's already running at capacity.

and your wandering ache sounds about par for the course- mine wandered from old injury to old injury while my dad was sick- it was like I was reliving every sprained ankle and ear infection of my childhood.

in your case, the B vitamin shot doesn't sound like a bad idea, as well as doing some experimenting with heat and cold packs to see which works best on your roving joint pain (heat works for me 85% of the time)

I've had some luck with hot pepper oil added to my regular massage balm (but I'm ok with experimenting on myself) and then wrapping the ouchy spot in a towel to hold the heat int while I rest.

and resting is important. not just sleep, but the stretching kind as well.

If you take into account the holistic approach to health problems and healing them, you might want to get a book or two from the library about this. Some suggested authors are Louise Hay, Caroline Myss and of course that wonderful ob/gyn Dr. Christiane Northrup who combines her formal medical training with a holistic approach to what is causing problems. I'm not suggesting for one moment anything can be substituted for medical treatment by a doctor; however I think conventional medicine can work hand in glove with a different approach as to why these parts of the body act up. As in why is it hands/feet/wrists and not knees/elbows? I think our bodies reflect our emotions and find this information fascinating. Certainly working with this helped me to alleviate a long-standing back problem that came up when caring for my elderly mother (as in "carrying the world on your shoulders").

The thinking is that feet represent fear of moving forward, and insecurity about being where you are. Also, thereÂs the feeling that too many demands are being made on you. As in "itÂs time to stand on your own two feet" mentally.

Hands can either hold on or let go; a sore thumb represents worry and the inability to hold on to joy.

Wrists represent ease and movement.

Numbness can mean you feel "dead" mentally.

Stiffness represents rigid thinking.

I woke up one morning with peculiar chest pains, like a shadow passing over. Ran to pharmacy & bought a bottle of aspirin before I took mom on appointments.Next day I did go to Dr. where I broke down in tears at EKG- not a heart attack. She diagnosed an anxiety attack. I don't quite buy it so did go see the cardiologist she recommended. He did another EKG but seems normal. So I've been started on Lexapro. Since that original chest pain, dad has fallen once where paramedics were called, mom has phlebitis in foot & dh's EKG indicates he has had a heart attack. His TKR is Feb 21, but I guess we can say that is subject to change.
