Putting up a "poly tunnel" now is like locking the door after the burgler is inside! :-) It sounds to me like it's either an animal, like a rabbit or birds, or cut worms. For animals I would try Repels- All. For cutworms, you can put cardboard collars around plants to keep them away, but for radishes, that is impossible. If you are going to replants, I would put some Rotonone in a spray bottle, and spray only those seedlings from emergence until they are a few inches tall. The little holes in the leaves are probally flea beetles. While unsightly, the little holes are unlikely to hurt the plants overall health or damage youe crop. I would just leave that be! I wouldn't do it Lucy. As far as I can see all the mentions of this concoction come from one source and are being repeated by others raher than being based on experience. I am a pretty gungho gardener regarding various scares but foxglove is a plant I wouldn't play about with. It can have serious effects, not just a bit of a tummy upset. I grow them and look at them and that's all. I find that sawfly doesn't come every year. How many bushes do you have? I only have 4 albeit large ones and I have found that vigilance and hand picking work. Another idea I read is to spread a white sheet under the bush and shake it vigorously.

You may have better luck in searching landscape history archives in the US, particularly those relating to his projects that you mention. He doesn't seem to be known here.

Good to hear from you. Yes it is the hardest for my dear sweet Dad. He has not been feeling well...the heat and his blood pressure has been low...it is usually high...taking him for doctors visit and try to get him doing better. He is staying in out of this heat. Glad to hear your violets are doing well.
