My dear Mom is gone.....

I went to the office yesterday, but after a few hours of catching up what I had left undone last week, I went back to be with Mom. At 7:15pm she took a deep breath, and then the next one never came. It was so peaceful; she was here and then she was gone. I know her love continues because I still feel it. God is good.

Oh, Susan, my deepest sympathies are with you. I know how hard this has been, but you've been doing a wonderful job for your dear Mother. Your best memories will keep your Mother in your heart.

Sharlee, my SIL gave me this poem the day after my mom died and I felt better for reading it. My mom's mind and body were broken but in death she became whole again. The Sailing Ship I am standing on the seashore. Suddenly a ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts out for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and of strength; and I stand and I watch her until at length she is only a ribbon of white cloud just above where sea and sky mingle with each other. Feeling a little better today, Monday. I've spoken with my siblings and they understand I can't come for a visit right now, my husband is in a Rehab Hospital himself due to an exacerbation of Mulktiple Sclerosis. My brother is the Executor of the Estate. My two sisters have volunteered to help with the sorting of her belongings. I wrote my brother Bill "Billy" a long letter, thanking him for taking care of Mom for the last years since Dad died , for visiting her every day when she was hospitalized, for getting her hospice at home, and told him I will not challenge the will. I trust him, we were best pals growing up, and I know he'll do right for all of us. Mom wanted no wake or funeral; we will spread her ashes when the summer comes. Thank you for all your responses. When my dear mother passed, we had a Celebration of Life. I made bookmarks for the attendees, with her picture and this poem that I found online. Thank you everyone for all your kind expressions. We were watching a movie tonight and a couple of times I could swear I felt a nudge against the side of the chair. Bubba's favorite thing was to rub his muzzle against one side of the chair while I scratched the other side. In the morning we had to have our nuggies - he'd start at the foot of the bed, rub his muzzle, continue on around to the front, I'd scratch his head and muzzle and he'd turn around to get the other side down. Buddy, the beagle has been mopping around all day. He usually goes out doors a large number of times, but today has only been a few times. I also think the snow (at least 16 inches or more and still snowing) has something to do with that. But more so, I'm sure he misses his pal. The vet's assistant said we needed to get another dog to keep Buddy company, but no thanks. I'm sure she was half serious, but Buddy will be enough for now and for the future. To all those who said I was a good doggy daddy, thank you. There were times I was really wondering if I/we were doing the right thing, but I am now more firmly convinced that we did. Thanks KTers.

My mom, ever the teacher, donated her body to the University Med.School, so future doctors and nurses can learn...there will be no funeral. This Friday from 1:30-3:30 there will be a memorial service and celebration of her life,and your prayers and thoughts would be so appreciated. You know, I have drawn so much comfort from this group, because as caregivers we understand the swings we have all gone through with our "cared-fors", and understand the special love and bond it creates. Thank you so much for all your thoughts and prayers. The memorial celebration went so well, a bright sunny day, people wrote condolence and memories on squares of vellum we provided, those who spoke each took a rose petal from the pink roses (Mom's favorites)and held it while they shared a rememberance, then placed it in a crystal bowl. I will make sachet's for my daughters from the petals. And we sent dozens of balloons sailing up toward the mountains with our love and wishes for Mom. My granddaughter made a collage of pictures of Mom from childhood, college, early wife and mothering, as well as recent pictures, and everyone enjoyed seeing them. All in all, a loving tribute. I am glad I made myself do it for her, when all I wanted to do was go to bed and pull the covers over my head.
Little sister breezed into town for Thanksgiving...maybe after the NY trip this week, I will be able to sort out my very mixed emotions about that!

Hi Sue! What a wonderful celebration! I hope that my children will be like you when our time comes. i also think that a memorial celebration could be something happy, and i think you did that ten-fold, i'm sure your mom was smiling down at all of you! Debbie
