Holiday Gift for Helpers

Okay, I have three women and 1 man that are paid sitters for my husband. All do a wonderful job and are paid well. I would like to give them something for a Holiday gift BUT I cant afford much.What would be appropriate but affordable? I know there are guidelines that suggest a cash gift of 1 weeks salary, NO WAY! After their hourly wages, meds, co pays, etc, I am really strapped.

I was wondering if a holiday planter and a local eatery gift certificate for around $20.-$25.00 would seem cheesy? Any thoughts? Does anyone else do something for their helpers? If so what?

Hi Sunnie! well when we had the VON's (nurses who came in) i either did give a holiday plant and because i quilt i have also made small wallh angings or crocheted angels andone year i made very small crossstitch angels and put them in a small round frame. i think whether it's a card or box of chocolates or a candle i think anyone would be happy to just be remembered. debbie

I think that would be quite alright. They understand how tight money can be. The only other thing I might suggest would be a gift certificate for a ham or turkey or even just $25.00 worth of groceries.

Thanks for the ideas. Unfortunately, cash or gift cert. is not going to work in this situation. You'll just have to trust me that I know what I'm talking about. And I don't think a "teach-y" kind of publication is the ticket either. But it's good to gather these ideas together here because who knows what will be helpful to others in the future. Keep 'em coming! Anyone have a favorite book of essays or (I don't know exactly how to describe it) "mood" or "philosophical" writing (ruminations?) about gardening. You know, something that just meanders around and goes off on tangents but is all connected by the personality of the writer and the general topic of nature/gardens/gardening. Hmm, I just remembered "A Sand County Almanac"...that might be a possibility.

Holiday gift for contractors?

Gave $25 GCs to Target and a $5 loaf of cinnamon bread from a local baker to all electricians, plumbers, cabinet workers, carpenters, and perm employees of my contractor. It ended up being about 15 people. I also give a bday gift to my two head contractors who each get a $200 bday gift and at the end of the project, a $2,000 gift of some sort. Last house I gave a GC to the Four Seasons Hotels for $2,000. This is our third or fourth house together and they work HARD for me--including not saying one word when I move an outlet or ask for the heater vent to be moved to another location. To be honest I find it a bit embarrassing that I don't give the workers more--they really go out of their way every day to make me happy. But I remember their names, greet everyone with respect and try never to talk in a demanding way, and they know that I appreciate their time and talent. If I had the budget I would give each of them $100, but I don't have that in my ability. My token gift and my everyday respect is all I can offer and I hope that it will be well received. It is given with sincerity and all of the most respectful, appreciation and intent. I always build these gifts into my total budget, so that I have enough to do this.

@Fun2BHere those plants are a great idea and I love the symbolism. @smiling that's a great list of ideas! Love the certificate for new business cards. That's something I've been bugging him about, too. @Oakley you and I are on the same wavelength - trust was the first thing I thought of but the young stylists do everything online now. He has never kept any client info on paper. @amykath I hadn't considered art but he has some framed vintage posters so that might be a possibility. Thanks all - I was coming up blank have lots of great ideas to consider now.

I don't understand the cutting people off as they become adults. A card, a small gift of a plant, flowers, cookies, no need to be spendy, but letting people know you are cheering them on as they enter adulthood seems like a nice thing to do. I truly appreciated the thoughtful gestures I was greeted with as I moved through my 20s, many visible milestones that decade, but many invisible as well. Of course I wanted for nothing, so that actually tends to make people more generous, which is perverse. Children are inherently selfish and have no idea of what the world is like outside their home. Giving them gifts is fine, but they take that for granted. Young adults, I find, could use some moral support.

we (Rusty and I) do a gift certificate and I think my sister does also, so they probbly get about $50.00 I have no idea what my Father gives them. Carolyn

I thihnk what you suggest sounds fine,Sunnie. In-home care givers have an understanding of what the family circumstances are like. You have to plan for the long-run. I would be wary of starting something you can't keep up.

Well I sat down to do the budget for the next few months and for the holiday. They will be getting either a beautiful little planter that I make out of old/dainty orphaned cream pitchers/ gravy boats and sweetheart ivy (cause they are sweethearts) or a pretty little cup and saucer with tea, stirrer and baked cookies OR a bouquet of lifesavers (cause they're our lifesavers). There just isnt any extra $$ and I hope per your comments that they understand!
