Animals - you can't live with them-you can't live without them
Comments (36)Thanks again all: Boa is doing much better. She is eating like a horse, but still doesn't want to be left alone. I can't believe the difference in her since I stopped the antibiotics. She demands food now, and her catmilk. Her and Bear got into their first fisticuffs in a long time when I was taking too long to get the food in the dish. She got a huge dish of whipped cream yesterday (her favorite) and didn't leave a smidgen in the bowl for Apache to finish. She is back on the tapazole now for the hyperthyroidism and doesn't even know it's in her food. I am breathing a sigh of relief. I know nothing can live forever, but I can hope. Think she will be with us for a while longer. Praise God for answering my prayers. Jenny...See MoreWho has vinyl floors that look like wood? Do you like them?
Comments (45)After reading the various threads and looking at the pics, I'm sold for the basement but we're also considering it throughout the first floor. I'm concerned about resale (though it's would be decades away). The homes in our neighborhood are selling for $700,000+, and the expectation of course is high end everything. I'm considering putting this in the main living area too due to the ease of care and who knows what I'll like in 10 years? Our last home we had extensive use of hardwood. I loved the look but the constant worry, and no shoe policy was unpleasant. I want a house that we can live in. For as cheap as this stuff is, we couldn't even have the floors refinished, for what this stuff costs new. We currently have hardwood in the front foyer, front bath, dinette, kitchen, and laundry room (I wouldn't say the previous owner made a wise move on that decision). With all the remodeling though, much of the wood will be trashed anyway, so it's like we'd be starting from scratch. Are we crazy to even consider vinyl (even for a decade) when we can afford the real thing (installation and all), when the expectation is high end? It's only my husband, myself, and a little dog on a daily basis....See MoreWhat if you don’t care for your friend’s friends
Comments (14)In cases like this I always like to think "I'm probably not their cup of tea either". You might want to attend at least one party though, even if briefly. You seem to care about the host so just be honest and say you are not much on big crowds but consider her a good friend so are making an exception. Then, she probably will not expect you more than once a year. Also, sometimes when you get to know a blowhard a bit better there are some good qualities hidden below the surface. I have a friend who's SO is too embarrassing to go to dinner or public places with (we won't) but after getting to know him find him to be a very caring kind person with a heart of gold. He's simply used to places in the Bronx or with his large family where he can be loud and say anything that pops in his head. We were once almost kicked out of a restaurant if you can believe it. We do go to their house for dinner about once a year though. The woman has been a friend for years and years. Sometimes getting to know people you wouldn't normally hang with can be interesting fun once the top layer is peeled off. In your instance (someone else's party) you can always leave when you want....See MoreSayings - Do you collect them?
Comments (17)My father had a saying that I always remembered, and he would say this when we wanted someone who was driving to slow down: "Hold her Newt, she smells alfalfa." I had no idea what this mean most of my life and never wanted to ask my father for explanations because he was way too long-winded. My much younger brother once told me the meaning. Newt was a hired hand who worked for my father, and he was driving a mule (the "she") that would speed up as she approached an alfalfa field. I never knew about the mule, and I had interpreted it to mean that she smelled like alfalfa, whoever that she was. From Kierkegaard: "Boredom is the root of all evil." <Either/Or ETA: I found the source for "Hold 'er Newt", and so my father did not make it up but had picked it up from someone else. I had no idea that it was a common phrase. My father may not have had a hired hand named Newt....See Moreasolo
