Yes I have a cell phone. Yes it has an alarm feature. Yes it is quite loud. Can you suggest a small, loud travel alarm clock. The ideal would be available at Walmart because it is a convenient location but online suggestions will be welcome too.

"Does ticking annoy you?" YES! Like mtn, I cannot fall asleep with ticking, or really any kind of ambient noise. I'm really stumped about a clock for my bedroom. I have to crane my neck very uncomfortably to see the time on my bedside clock and have been trying to find something that looks nice and is absolutely silent to put on my dresser--that way when I'm reading at night I can see if it's time to put the book away and turn the lights out. Right now for wake up duty I've got a digital clock/radio. Also don't like being wakened by an alarm; classical music is much more pleasant and gentle to hear first thing in the morning. And last but not least: dreaming of when I too can retire and never have to turn out that light at X-o'clock because I've got to be up for work/meetings/exercise (squeezed in before work) again!! We Have an Alaron pendulum wall clock that ticks REALLY loud. It also chimes REALLY loud. It's not a bedside clock, but if you like the ticking sound this one can be heard all over the house at night. As far as bedside clocks..we also have a Big Ben, wind up clock but it's in a drawer...never used because it's such a pain to keep it wound. I wonder if they make an electric one?

All the way back to 1960, jemdandy? That's interesting. So you do clock repair? If so, what a coincidence. I think this little "Tiffany" clock might be the real thing. Besides having the name, the made in France stamp, and a serial number (?), it also has a few of what I'd guess are repairer's marks and dates. One looks like 12/29/02. The others I can more or less read, but don't understand. The style of it makes me think of the 1980's somehow. But I'm thinking that if it has been a good enough clock for someone else to have repaired, then maybe it is still repairable. I'm actually a bit excited to think I may have found a nice piece. This is only 3" X 2.5" X 1.375" yet it weighs 24.9 ounces without its glass. A pound and a half. I did visit a clock repair person, but he wasn't able to help me with finding an alarm clock. (I had thought, as you said, that maybe someone might have abandoned their old clock.) That visit was before I found this "Tiffany" one at the thrift store, and I'll be going to him to check my find. But even if he fixes it for me, I will still look for a back-up. ......Since looking so much for alarm clocks, my eye has been caught many times by psuedo-brass rotating pendulum clocks. I keep looking to see if they, too, might be wind up, but I only see battery ones, and the pendulums are plastic. Blah. I'm nostalgic about that kind of clock, because one such was probably the most [only] elegant item in my childhood household, and it was my job to dust it and wind it.
