You need to call and talk with your doctor ASAP. He will no doupt want to see and examine your ankle, do some xrays and see what's going on. Sounds like you will also need some professionally done physical therapy. Guidance as to the correct exercises to do, how much to do and when to do them. Swelling of your ankle is an idication of several different things and only your doctor can tell you what they are. The fact that by evening your ankle is swollen and "throbbing in pain" says that something is not right. Could be too much pressure on the ankle to soon, not the correct exercises being done, additional damage to the bones from walking to quickly on it, and it could be that some or any of the hardware is coming out of the bone. Remember that the ankle takes much of the weight of your body on it every time you stand on it. If it isn't healed enough when you put full weight on it, you can rebrake or hairline fracture the bones again. As for the plate hurting in cold weather, that's not uncommon to happen. It may be possible in a few months to a year, to have the plate removed, but it's too soone to do so right now, I would think. Talk to your doctor about all these problems ASAP, before anything gets worse. You should explain to him/her about your finances and see if your charges can be reduced. The same goes for physical therapy. There should be some arrangements you can make to lower the cost quite a bit, based on no insurance. It's worth a try, because it sounds like you will need some. I saw two bare-legged or natural colored stockings variations of this this morning. Both women were between 25 and 30, both had black boots and both were dressed in black with pretty short skirts.(several inches above the knee) 1) had a full short black skirt and an extremely voluminous 3/4 belted jacket with a very large collar and a lot of fabric. The fabric was a Japanese looking print and the cut was Japanese-inspired looking The boots were very short barely more than a shoe that was filled-in, sort of. 2) had on a short tight skirt (black) and a black tailored jacket and she had on genuine Boots that came up over the ankle a couple of inches. I think it looked fine on both of these women. But the first outfit in general would have been very unflattering on a lot of people. She had the trifecta of tall, thin and young. The second outfit was more universal, but I think it depended upon the monochromatic outfit where everything was the same color (or at least not distinctly light or lightweight on top) and I think it relied on the fair expanse of leg between the top of the boot and the hem.

I have been running for 40 years and trail running for 20 and hiking and gym and blah, blah, blah. A few years ago I was running and stepped on a pine cone, fell off and tore all the ligaments in my ankle. I went to my doctor, had x-rays and then sent me straight to physio. My kids still tease me about falling off of a pine cone. This is not the only time I have sprained an ankle. I'm coming off of a slight sprain right now from doing ladder work in the gym and then going straight into high knees over low hurdles. I screwed up the transition and went over on my foot. Went straight to my physio and he started the healing process for me. At the very least I would go to a physio if you have one. Only go to one that you trust. They can quicken the healing and give you strengthening exercises for the foot and ankle. If you don't have one then you could go to your doctor. I wouldn't bother with an Ace bandage but rather would get a small soft brace which are available at drug stores. They go under the foot and around the ankle, are velcroed and provide really good support. Wear it when you first go back into the trails and if you have walking poles or can borrow some do so for the first few times as well. Good luck - this really is a pain in the butt.
