Simple remote device for television

My aunt wants to buy a big flat-screen TV, which she can afford. She needs an easy-to-use very simple remote device. Those that come with the new television sets are far too complicated for her, because she has trouble with short-term memory. Anybody have any recommendations? I've seen a few advertised but have no experience with any of them.

Don't know what buttons you'd want to keep and which to dispense with. In any event, I doubt you'll find exactly what you want anywhere.

Something I've had some luck with at our house with elderly mom with macular degeneration and some dementia. Have a big TV universal remote purchased at Radio Shack. Using card stock and tape, I've blocked out all of the buttons except the ones she knows how to use. For us, that's on/off, volume up/down, and mute.

Takes a little skill in construction of the cover because you have to put solid spacers under the surface of the cardboard to prevent pressure from unintentionally triggering a button beneath the cardboard's surface. Otherwise all materials are cheap and principals simple as can be.

You might contact the company to see if they have any other remotes avaiable. Or ask the manager (not sales) if he/she have any suggestions.

It would be a cool device. You've had me thinking on it since I read your post. It's actually quite doable if the broadcaster would feel building the query database would be profitable. That's the kind of forward thinking that makes people rich!!!The possibilities are endless if it were implemented. One of my digital to analog converters has a pause on it when even on a live broadcast, you could pause the picture. If the tv is connected to the internet then you could use your pointer, type in "persons name" or "mountain name" or point to a food dish and query "recipe". I know a lot of folks have the newer tv's that wirelessly log onto the internet. Mine has a small keyboard that slides out from under the remote. It comes in handy when doing searches on netflix or, looking at ebay, facebook, etc. real quick right from the tv. It could surely work off that same principle and evolve over time into something even more powerful....good thinking on your part!!!

thanks for the thoughts and suggestions. oaktown and writersblock, I love the idea of a projector! I hadn't even though about that. We're calling an AV person to see if they can help us with that. louisana, you're correct, the wall between the open kitchen/family/dining does not fully separate the living room, so there will be sound transfer. Actually, one of the bedrooms does not have a wall going to the ceiling so there is a lot of noise carrying around the space. Here's how the space is laid out (pre-remodel): ineffable, I'm a TV listener too. We have Sonos speakers we've installed in the house and I could be perfectly happy just listening to Pandora and watching Downton Abbey and SNL on my iPad, but my husband would be so lost without a TV of his own. tom_nwnj, thanks for the recs -- I will check them out. I like the idea of putting all the comfy seating in the formal living room and just making the den/space next to the kitchen just a "lounge" area -- for drinking wine, playing games, etc. I think it would significantly enhance our use of the house as we don't currently use the living room. That room is bathed in light most of the day and has the best views of any room in the house -- it seems like a waste not to utilize it. linelle, we were just visiting friends recently and they had a TV (LARGE ones!) in every room, including several of the bathrooms. The owners both work in the entertainment industry, but it was slightly overkill. karenseb, thanks for the nice words. In our upcoming kitchen renovation, we plan on replacing the double ovens with a pantry as we have no pantry and limited food storage space. A tv at the end of the bar is still definitely an option if we can recess it -- we're going to have an AV person come out to measure. If all else fails a TV in the master bedroom is an option, but I'm not generally a fan of TVs in bedrooms.

Sarschlos... Retrofitting can be a pain but it may be worth looking into if you really want to do it. Not everyone is comfortable taking chunks out of walls only to discover the ceiling joists run the other way. You could do some research or get an estimate. If the plan sounds like something you can do, go for it. Like I said, you can save a lot doing it yourself but also need to be willing to fix any mistakes you make. Sometimes the pros are a better choice. You could still do same set up with the components in same room, hiding the wires somewhere to come out the wall where your components are just like monkeyjac did. Worst case scenario, you can hide wires in corners of rooms. I ran a speaker wire by digging a tiny crack in corner of room. Crammed wire in and filled with caulk or joint compound. Painted and you cannot see it at all. Once I hid the wire using that plastic tube stuff and ran it along the baseboards. Monkeyjac... Thanks for adding the technical terms to the set up. My dh is the one who knows all that stuff. I just come up with the ways to hide the stuff. I am the official drywall/texture person on any project. I have become really good at fixing holes in drywall. Not necessarily because we have accidents but mostly out of having to move fixtures or such. I must say that your cost was not too bad hiring the job out. One thing we decided to do when moving tv to over the fireplace was to recognize that a potential new owner may not like the idea. So we left the original port for the components we had in the entertainment center on wall all nice and neat. We have a sofa in front of it. We figure this way any future owner could still put tv wherever they wanted. They would put a picture or mirror over fireplace and use an entertainment center or they could have tv over fireplace. They could even leave tv over fireplace and keep components in same room. Options are always a great feature when designing something. These days you really need to appeal to as many potential buyers as you can.

Thanks, Teresa. Would love to see photos of your home. I'll have to do a search later. Squirrel, it is antique pine. I do not cut directly on the counter at all. When needed, I use a cutting boards either on the island or next to the range. Don't cut directly on the granite either. We are good about wiping away water splatters after washing hands or dishes. I have never left a glass sitting on the counter overnight, so I don't know what that would do. The guys just asked me about that when they were here installing the tv cover. The pine is finished with Good Stuff for Wood which is FDA approved for food prep surfaces. I order from the below link. Have only recoated twice in 27mths. It does look as if some smart person would design a remote that had: On, Off, and numbers for the channels. A preset for the available (and desirable ) channels and a preset volumn control.

I had a aunt that left hers on day and night, same station all the time. Problem was all it showed was snow.

I really think there is as big a market for simple as there is for complex and useless.

I bought the Tek Pal device mentioned above, $27 from Amazon including shipping. Unfortunately, my aunt needs to use both the cable remote (to change channels) and the TV remote (to turn on/off TV, regulate volume, also mute button), which means the Tek Pal is of no real use because it works ONLY with the TV and won't allow her to change channels.

This cannot be an unusual circumstance. Truly irritating that we can't find a better solution. We did mark her remote with a sign to show her what button to push if the settings get out of whack. And we made a list of all available channels with the correct number for each.

For the moment that may work.
