Simple remote device for television

My aunt wants to buy a big flat-screen TV, which she can afford. She needs an easy-to-use very simple remote device. Those that come with the new television sets are far too complicated for her, because she has trouble with short-term memory. Anybody have any recommendations? I've seen a few advertised but have no experience with any of them.

Don't know what buttons you'd want to keep and which to dispense with. In any event, I doubt you'll find exactly what you want anywhere.

Something I've had some luck with at our house with elderly mom with macular degeneration and some dementia. Have a big TV universal remote purchased at Radio Shack. Using card stock and tape, I've blocked out all of the buttons except the ones she knows how to use. For us, that's on/off, volume up/down, and mute.

Takes a little skill in construction of the cover because you have to put solid spacers under the surface of the cardboard to prevent pressure from unintentionally triggering a button beneath the cardboard's surface. Otherwise all materials are cheap and principals simple as can be.

You might contact the company to see if they have any other remotes avaiable. Or ask the manager (not sales) if he/she have any suggestions.

Here is a link to the only such device I have found. I haven't purchased it yet so I have no information on how well it works. Since it is my understanding that they are relatively expensive, I suspect the manufacturer rep can provide info on sales or customer feedback. You could consider a cheaper although somewhat of a hacked together solution using this. Lutron Maestro IR 600 Watt Single Pole Digital Dimmer - White I have this in my basement to dim the lights from my couch. It relies on IF so it is line of sight but it works easily across my basement and would work easy in a bedroom. It has both dimming and on and off. So if you kept the remote by the bed stand, you could switch the lamp on and off without getting up and the switch would still work. It would allow you to do a single pole switch instead of a 3-way so long as the outlet you are controlling is the switched outlet. For $40, it's a very reasonable solution in my opinion. Just another thought...and on a side, I have been using mine for about 3 years now and love it. I even programmed my harmony remote to control the lights so my TV remote replaced the included remote! EDIT: Did just think about the above posters comment on a dimmable receptacle so this may not work, but there may be a corresponding on/off version. We have a Roku ... the company I work for has a wireless chip inside so a number of us at the office were given the Roku as a Christmas present a couple years ago. The Roku is very, very easy to use. Setup probably took all of five minutes. When Netflix was not charging to stream videos, it was a very good deal but now they charge $8 for mail order DVDs and $8 for streaming. Old movies aren't all that hard to find in regular programming with the cable service we have but I love watching documentaries, which are harder to come by, so streaming is good for that. What do you mean your old DVD player "won't work?" Does it require a connection your current TV does not have? Does it say on the screen that it cannot play the DVD you selected? Need more info. Sometimes DVD players will permit you to change the "region" so that DVDs made for the US and other parts of N.America won't work in other parts of the world. Make sure you haven't accidentally switched the region for your player.

I don't know if they have anything, but check Radio Shack. AT least they are helpful there.

It does look as if some smart person would design a remote that had: On, Off, and numbers for the channels. A preset for the available (and desirable ) channels and a preset volumn control.

I had a aunt that left hers on day and night, same station all the time. Problem was all it showed was snow.

I really think there is as big a market for simple as there is for complex and useless.

I bought the Tek Pal device mentioned above, $27 from Amazon including shipping. Unfortunately, my aunt needs to use both the cable remote (to change channels) and the TV remote (to turn on/off TV, regulate volume, also mute button), which means the Tek Pal is of no real use because it works ONLY with the TV and won't allow her to change channels.

This cannot be an unusual circumstance. Truly irritating that we can't find a better solution. We did mark her remote with a sign to show her what button to push if the settings get out of whack. And we made a list of all available channels with the correct number for each.

For the moment that may work.
