Greetings all

I used to chat on The Home Site for a long time ... but haven't been involved in many home projects for a long time ....

Today I had a few moments and decided to post about my home sale remodel efforts and noticed this forum!!!!!!!!! Hoo-ray - I'll have to spend some time reading back-posts.

I was just granted guardianship of my 66 yr-old mother who was recently diagnosed with dementia. I'm going nuts trying to put things in place. And although I have learned a lot during this process, meeting many sincere and caring folks along the way, I certainly need advice and support with much of this ... so I'll do some reading of the posts here and tell you more about my delimna's soon - and maybe I'll be able to help some of ya'll too!

I have a feeling there is a wealth of information here!

Welcome to this forum. The members here are all so helpful and encouraging. And, as you suspect, there's plenty of good advice too. But the best part is just knowing that there are others going through similar circumstances and that they're willing to lend an ear.

I wish you the best. 66 is young for her to have that, poor gal. My grandmother spent the last 10 years of her life like that and it turned out it was a side effect of the heart med she had been on for a long time. I wish I had known that at the time.

Welcome ww! Don't bother trying to plant anything during the summer. Planting seasons here are early Oct and late Feb to give plants time to get established. Just use the time to observe the sun patterns and know how much sun you get on what parts of the landscape. A lot of the plants you see in the nursery may say "full fun" but here it means 'morning/partial' sun. Oh, and enjoy the pool! :-)

SAw my niece, in passing. Had overnight with brother's family, now that the pressure is off from dealing wth the reunion. Their son played a musical gig last night, another tonight in Saskatoon. They had a heavy wind and four persons were holding on to a tent for dear life - managed to keep it, but it was damaged. I'm on my way back home now. I'd hoped to meet cynic and sarksals, maybe some others in MN and Marie ND, but don't know precisely where to find Marie. She said they were rather busy with medical stuff and other things. It'll be hard to hear back from cynic and/or sparksals, etc., as it's nearing closing down time for libraries for weekends and we hadn't made plans earlier. Wish me luck for the rest of the trip. ole joyful

FOAS, I started a new thread just for what everyone cooked. :) Your meal sounds lovely. I'm trying to wrap my head around "risotto" made of pasta. How do you make that? We lost a lot of people with the change. I know I was mad at the format change because it went in right when I was stressed and exhausted and wanted to cozy up with my friends in the box. It took a lot of patience to get used to things and make it feel like "home". And I was only on GW for 7-8 years. Many go back to the beginning or soon after! Still, there were a lot of threads (including several of mine) about the cooking of parts of the meals. Hopefully people will post about their results. As you'll see, I kind of go ape over the vegetables for harvest meals (though this time of year is the barley harvest, it is Spring, so just as good an excuse. We use a lot of roots and dried fruits because traditionally they're the last of the previous year's bounty (and all there was in places where snow was still on the ground). The wheat harvest and the first fruits would be at the next harvest festival, Shavuot ("Weeks", seven weeks from now), when we traditionally eat dairy. There are some reasons for that, but none are particularly convincing. :)

My 80 yr. old mother has just entered LTC. I cared for her myself in my home for 3 1/2 yrs., my brother took care of her for just under 3 months.

This forum has been a godsend for me, but this is grim place; our wards are going to die and we are the ones who will make that eventuality as smooth and "easy" as possible.

Many of the stressful and unpleasant realities are aired here. Sometimes the things you read are really scarey. Those of us who have done the hard work of caregiving "get it" and we don't generally "sugarcoat it".

Welcome aboard... it will be an interesting journey.

I'm extending my welcome, too. My 91 year old Mom with Alzheimer's type dementia is now also in LTC. I did the in-home caregiving for 5 years and it was (and still is) something you take one day at a time.
