My Mom is home after a fall in the hospital

My Mom is home and I hope safe...

They were really pushing for her to come home last week....

But she fell last Wed on the concrete Floor OUCH~~~~

No broken bones at 98 can you believe that...

The Dr kept her 2 more days to be sure there were no broken bones.

I bought her home Friday and the home health care nurse came Saturday to see her.

Say she will need lots of physical therapy ....

We have a commode in the bathroom and one in her room plus a shower chair.

Now next week we are getting a wheel chair and hopefully a hospital bed.

Her bottom is so sore and busied from her fall that is is hard for her to get up and down and in bed/

She is eating like a bird hard eats at all.

She is looking very old and weak.

I feel so bad for her she still wants to do all she can to help but the poor thing cant even dress herself.

Me I have finally got the rest I needed and am feeling much better.

My back is still giving me problems but the patch I wear seems to help the pain.

Imabest, these gals are sure made of stronger stuff, aren't they? ;-D
I'm happy to hear no bones were broken; my Mom fell outside two years ago and broke her bone just below her hip. Pins fixed that, but the bruises took so long to heal!
As for not eating much, do you give her something like Ensure or Boost? They're not fond of them bcause of the think consistency, so I used to put it into my blender with more milk and froth it up: she said it was like a milk-shake! Our doc even suggested those slurpie things from a convenience store! lol! 3,000 calories to fatten her up! At this point in time, a Food Guide isn't what they need, he said. Naturally the basics, but calories do count, too, and she needed them. Never did the slurpie thing, but the Ensure really helped. ;-)

You have a full plate now, don't you? I hope the physio goes well and that her appetite improves....

Kathy, Had you in my thoughts and prayers and was going to post this morning. Good to hear Mom is at home...sorry about the fall...tell her I send a big hug and to rest and eat so she will get her strength back. Good news to hear that you are feeling better....still have to take care of you....how is your weather...hope you and Mom get to enjoy your deck. God Bless, Nora

Not only no perfume, but avoid scented personal products of any sort, whether they are soaps, deodorants, skin lotions, cosmetics, hair products, the like. She should always choose the unscented version not matter how pretty the scent of the scented version is. The side benefit is that when she goes out in the evening she can put on her favorite perfume and not worry about conflicting scents getting in the way of the scent she has chosen to wear. Sometimes people wear so many contrasting perfumes they cancel each other out. BTW - my daughter took Benadryl for a while because of severe allergic reactions. I noticed she was becoming very sad. Her allergist told me that Benadryl is a beta blocker, which meant nothing to me, but apparently it can affect a person's mood. It also makes people very drowsy, so she should not drive when she is taking it. For long term use I believe there are better medications, but Benadryl is easily and conveniently available when one needs something quickly. And in an emergency, nothing is better than the Epipen. It can save a person's life and give him time to get to the hospital. I wish your mother a quick recovery and a happy return to her garden. Rosefolly

Debbie I am sorry for the loss of your mother. I know how you feel. I lost my mother 2 1/2 years ago and it took me some time to get over her. I am not an attorney, so I cannot give you advise. I am sure your attorney will be able to give you the advise you are looking for. My mother was 60 years old and September 24th was the day her and my father were married. My mother had kidney failure, strokes, high blood pressure and diabetes. I remember her telling me a few months before she passed that she was tired of suffering and wanted to move onto to the next life. I cried with her and told her that we needed her and I did not want her talking like that. A friend of mine told me that if I were in her shoes what would I want? I then decided that I was being selfish and I would not want to live my life that way. My mother had a living will and she made the choice for us to not have her on a ventilator. That was easier for us. We were all in the room encouraging her to move on to the next life and believe me it was tough. Tears are running down my eyes as I am writing this to you. I miss her and love her so much. Set up a shrine somewhere in your home and decorate with things she enjoyed in her life. My pain was shifted about 2 1/2 months ago, Dec. 1st, 2006, when my 20 year old son was killed in a construction accident. Dominick was my baby boy. He was my Christmas baby, because he was born on Christmas. This past Christmas he was to turn 21 and boy was he excited about that. I ask the Lord every day why he took my son and not me? Again, there is a reason for why things happen and we never expect it to happen to us. Keep your father occupied and bring the family closer with weekend gatherings. Glad there's a diagnois on it. My big concern here was dehydration. With people or critters I get very concerned about that these days. I've been dehydrated a few times in the past 5 years or so and let me tell you, that is no fun. Really does strange things to you. Was hospitalized for it a year ago. It can happen quickly and easily. Vomiting and diarrhea will zap your fluid levels quickly even if you're trying to drink fluids. Here's wishing all of you the best. Keep drinking plenty of fluids and hope she has a speedy recovery. After a couple liters of fluid It can make a world of difference in how you feel. Oh and when I had the CT Scan I had to drink that junk. Talk about repulsive. I asked if they at least had some brandy to mix with it. Not sure if it would help but sure wouldn't have hurt. And BTW Jasdip, feel free to stop by for a butt-kicking anytime! Boy there's a joke here that writes itself but I'll refrain! :)

Back to the design question (and I'm super sorry your foot got in the way of the falling tile!), I like to work with something OTHER than wood-look in bathrooms. Only if the ENTIRE HOME is covered (or a large section) in the same wood-look tile, would I recommend using wood look in a bathroom. Why? Because it LIMITS the REST of your space. Imagine if you put in wood look tile in ONE bathroom. And then 7 years later you decide to update the entire home and decide you want "wood" (don't care what product...you just want the look). Oh dear! You ALREADY have a small space filled with wood-look stuff. Oh no. There goes the REST of the plan. All because a 35sf bathroom already has something that looks like wood. It is a design faux pas to put one "wood" product up against another "wood" product. So I vote for another form of tile. I also vote for "shower conversion" if, and ONLY IF, you already have a bath tub somewhere else. So long as your home has ONE tub, all the rest of the bathrooms can either be showers or powder rooms. And let me tell you, a BEAUTIFULLY DONE shower is MUCH MORE valuable that a cramped bathroom with a tub taking up 1/2 the space. But to convert the tub to shower, you need to have the full $20K ready to go (and that's a LOW BALL estimate....the average cost to renovate a bathroom = $30K). Have a look at your budget. You might find that a tub-to-shower conversion isn't in the cards (or the bank account).

Hi Kathy... So sorry to hear about your mother's fall. She probably hurts as bad as if she had broken something. (Thank God she didn't...) It's good to hear that you are rested and feeling better; also, that the patch is helping... My mother was 97, so I can relate to your dear mom... I'll be praying for her. ~breezy

Hey there, Kathy. SOOO glad she is home and know you are too. "Tis always good to get them back in their "slots", no matter the work. I hope you can make good use of the help and eqpt and spare your back some. Bet you will have her perked up and eating better in no time, if it can be done. You have obviously taken such good care of her this far.

Oh, I'm so glad to hear that she didn't hurt more in that fall--it could have been bad! My Mother is 95, and I know that if she just bumps against the wall, she gets a major bruise. And yes, whatever it takes to give them some calories.

WHo gave the hint about the Ensure in the blender with milk? Great idea! I'll see if that helps.

But, Ima, it must be good to have her home. Here's a hug from me for you, specially!

Ensure, and other things like it, can be very helpful. However, not all of the flavors are appealing. I, personally, think that the Vanilla flavored ones with as little almond, rum or sherry extract added are the best. Almond extract seems to be especially good for cutting that heavy, cloying 'sweet' taste. About 1/2 to 1 teaspoon to a can.

PeeBee, besides adding milk to tone down the consistency, I have added banana flavouring to the vanilla, and she enjoyed that, too! Whatever it takes, right? ;-D
