Hi Linda...I was so happy to hear that your Mothers transition to the LTC went so well. It is hard, to move them after you had her for so many years. What a gift, that she done so well, it makes it so much better for her and you both. I am sure you can sleep nights knowing she is being well taken care of. This will lift a alot from you and now let you enjoy so much more of her life...with-out the constant care daily. I am glad it went well because I knwo you were worried. Rest easy now!!!!! Yes, the transition, tho' sudden, went without a hitch except for yesterday. She kept asking to go home. However, each time she asked was like the first time, and she really didn't understand my answer (we have to wait for you to see the doctor)...etc...
However, today was just GREAT! As soon as she saw me at lunch in the dining-room she just about burst telling me how she played a ball game with her feet (they circle the chairs/wheelchairs and have the residents kick a beach ball around, and toss it in the air. She said she was very good, and the staff said she should be their coach! ;-) After lunch she wanted to lay in bed for a while, so we "chatted", then we got her ready for High Tea, which they have each Sunday afternoon in the main dining-room. I put powder, blush and pink lipstick on her and she looked adorable (she always likes getting 'made up'...she's a Diva, really! ;-) We were served tea in lovely china cups and saucers and had a tray of sweet desserts on each table. It was so cute....Mom and her church ladies always organized grand teas and I think this brought back some lovely memories. She then declared that she wanted to go back to HER ROOM for a nap before dinner!!! Her nurse took her back and I said my good-byes "for now".

WHAT a more pleasant day!!! I just LOVE visiting with her now! We were right! With the yucky, day-to-day tasks being taken care of by others, our visits are truly precious! What a change!! Next Sunday we'll bring Tammy, our BorderCollie in to visit her! They all just love Mom there and take such gentle care of her....I keep praying it continues...

Gabby...we're both experiencing our new lives, you and I, and our hubbys...and it's really quite different, isn't it? I still expect to hear her door open, I still try to be quiet in the mornings so that she can sleep; it's almost like I'm just turning circles in the house...I don't know what to do with myself! (My hubby suggested I quilt the quilt I pieced together last year!;-)

Anyway...you're off on new adventures, travelling...and I can actually put my stereo on now in the house (her tv had to be so loud for her to hear it)....Whoda thunk it!

Again...thank you for your thoughts...I keep you and others on here in my thoughts and prayers each evening...things can change so quickly...

Lindi, Oh I am so happy for you and your dear Mother. High Tea....what a wonderful time to share and be together. It sounds like Mom is doing great and also you....it will take time to get back into your normal living routine....if there is such a thing...LOL Mom will have something new to tell you each time you visit...sounds like a wonderful,caring place. Phil, I'd be more than happy to call you when Paisley Parfait is selling for $10.00 anywhere, but I really think the devil will be wearing a parka before that happens. It's not a fast grower and I have no intentions of offering it to a Tissue Culture lab to have it mass produced. I also believe it would fail in TC due to its unstable nature. It's strictly a plant for serious collectors and hybridizers. As for the high price paid for these plants...it's to support the American Hosta Society, and I applaud the good folks who dig deep into their pockets to support one of the best plant societies in the world. hi greetings from Canada! I spoke to Linda's cuz just in the past 1/2 hour, and she didn't say anything to me (they speak everyday on the computer). i also rec'd 2 e-mails from her last week the latest one was on thursday at the latest. she probably has spring fever where she is, just like us and everyjoying it while it lasts, right now it's a tropical 44 out! -- can't believe how silly the high school kids are-- they're wearing shorts! anyways, she's probably doing a spring clean up outside, i can't here since we still have atleast 2 feet of snow on the ground! debbie

I have honed calacatta marble and I love it. There are three issues with marble that people talk about--chipping, staining and etching. But only one of them is really an issue. Chipping--while it is an issue, other natural materials chip too, so I don't think it is fair to say that chipping is an issue unique to marble. It is softer than granite but I had granite before and I had plenty of chips around my sink. I This time around I am trying harder to be careful. I have trained my husband to lower pots into the sink carefully and I keep a cutting board strategically located right above the dishwasher pulled all the way forward. Over the dishwasher is a prime place for chips. Staining--this one is a really stupid issue because it does not have to be an issue at all. Marble does not stain if you get it sealed, assuming you clean your counters daily! My counters were sealed when they were installed almost 18 months ago and still nothing stains them. Not wine, not tomato sauce. Nothing. Last evening, I found coffee and strawberry juice from the morning that I must have missed when cleaning--I wiped it up hours later and no stains. Sometimes coffee gets under the Nespresso machine. I find it days and days later and clean it without a problem. Etching is the issue. There is nothing you can do to prevent it. We had a party last year and made margaritas--there are little rings all over the area where the blender and glasses were. We use a lot of lemons and limes and there are little spots on my counters where they squirt past the cutting board. I am very careful about citrus--that is about the only thing that etches every time--but careful doesn't equal perfect. If I am juicing a bunch of lemons, I do it over the sink. I have been able to wipe up citrus within a couple of seconds with no etching. Honing helps as etching shows more on a polished surface. Only you know whether the etching will bother you too much to live with it. Does it bother me? A little. Do I wish it wouldn't etch? Yes. Am I the counter police? A bit but I am easing up over time especially because I know that lemons and limes are the real culprits so I can mostly control that. The next margarita party might see a towel put down by the blender and some extra cutting boards. To me, nothing is as beautiful as marble and I would do it again in a heartbeat. But it is not for everyone.

Ginny...is it possible that we're married to the same man?! ;) I think...no..I know I've made up my mind! Since our appliances are new, and white, and of course our Bunn coffee maker, Keurig coffee maker and other little appliances are black, here's what I propose: We're putting in a laminate countertop because putting in granite is too costly for this place and I really don't like the noise it makes whenever I've put a plate or utensil down on it and my grip isn't as...grippy lately, so I know I'll drop things in it, too...so! Slick black laminate: it's matte with shine...a sort-of pebbly finish but NO flecks or colour in it! It'll be butted to the wall without that cuvey dooey that takes up space. I think it's called "bar cut", so it's a wider countertop. Backsplash: pure white subway tiles, with a stip insert of "Eclipse black" tile..which I can't find anywhere on here to show you! It's made up of small tiles about 1"x2", all the same size, but randomly placed, some matte black, some a shiny pebbly black, and some are mirrored black! It's shiny!! Which makes me happy. I'm not called "Glitter" for nothing! But it'll be just a 5-line strip, and filled in behind the stove, then continuing along the other piece of countertop, 2' long. So it'll run for 15', but it'll fill in behind the stove (there's a cabinet above, so there isn't a huge space there, so I didn't want to break it up) So! I can put any colour of accessories in there I please, because black and white goes with anything! I can't wait to dress it up in red for Christmas! Anyhoodles.....your thoughts, anyone? You've all been so helpful..honestly..you gave me the "push" I needed to actually get out there and find what I wanted! I fell in love with that black Exlipse tile! We're even considering putting an under-mount sink in there, too, since they can do that now with laminate. I'm thinking a black sink....sigh...which will be the same as our daughter's countertop and sink....! LOL!!! But whereas she has those glass tiles in brown tones, I'll have my black and white!! Oh, Nora....I can only hope and pray it stays this way! My hubby dropped in this morning after teaching his one morning class and they had her "playing" bingo! She needed a lot of help, but she at least understood what the game was. Yes.....I've yet to see a sour face on any of the staff, and their interactions with other patients appear to be so caring.....Wow. We are very fortunate!
It does make a big difference that she's seems so happy there....Now if I can only stop wandering around the house without any aparent purpose, I'll be fine, too.

Linda, I am so glad your Mom is doing well...it sounds like it's a wonderful place. It must really ease your mind that the staff is so caring...you are indeed fortunate to have found a place where she seems so happy. Your routine has been disrupted, but I am sure you will find other things to keep you busy. If your Mom is doing well, you will do well also...

Thank you, Patti....I called this morning and the nurse said she's such a happy person! She kept saying how everyone there is spoiling her! lol!!

Linda, Such a blessing for you that all is still going well with Mom. You talked about wondering around the house...just a suggestion....do something that you have always wanted to do but time just didn't permit....be good to you....you need to give yourself a treat. God Bless, Nora

Honestly, Nora....I'm almost feeling lost! But I had pieced together our queen-size quilt two years ago, that still has to be top-quilted (it's all pinnned together), so I might start with that. It'll be weird sewing without interruptions!
And I may actually plan and execute a REAL dinner with my hubby tomorrow!
She looked wonderful today, also....all washed and sparkly clean..;-) Still helping everyone else...

Yes, Nora...little by little I'll have to get things in order around here....but as for me...I think lunch with my girlfriends next week will be wonderful! I won't be worrying about leaving my DH alone with her (and her incontinence problem), watching my time...Heavens! I may have TWO glasses of wine! ;-D

Linda, You sound like you are doing o.k. It will just take time...lunch with the girls...sounds great. Continue to let us know how Mom is doing....helping everyone else...makes me smile to know that she is bringing joy to others. Know what you mean about not watching the time...when I do get a break...that is the one thing that I enjoy...with Mom's eating every 2 hours,meds.,bedtime,fixing meals,etc....the clock rules my life.LOL I do have help but....I am the one that makes things go around here. Linda, So happy you & your Mom are enjoying a new life. Yes, it takes time to treat ourselves. I'm still learning & working on that one without feeling guilty.

Having lunch w/friends is a great release. Tomorrow I'm doing just that & looking forward to seeing an old neighbor friend. Tonight my honey darling & I have a "date" to just be home together at 5pm. I want to make it special for him as he's recovering from an auto accident & cannot work his usual 2 days a wk altho' he's retired.

Hope today finds you having FUN!!!
