80th Birthday Gift ideas

Posted by ginnier (My Page) on

Help... My MIL is having her 80th birthday soon ane we are trying to think of something we can give her 80 of. She's mostly home bound and had surgery plus now has an ostomy bag, but hopefully she'll regain energy and zest to go out. She has a small place and we don't want to overrun her with flowers, candy, or knickknacks. Any ideas? I was thinking of a handwritten devotion/Bible verse for her to read and reread... May be too serious, I don't know...

If she is religious, that would be a lovely gift. How about books (if you know if she prefers fiction, romance, biographies, etc., that's an added plus)? Does she have a DVD or a VCR? If so, she'd probably enjoy tapes of movies and TV series. How about a year of cable? A subscription to a favorite magazine or newspaper? Fruit of the month club?

Sometimes a whole basket of little things that one needs are helpful. Stamps, writing paper, an assortment of all-occasion greeting cards, etc., are all welcomed by the homebound.

How about putting together a photo a;bum? For my parent's 50th anniversary (they would up going almost 63 years), we bought a nice picture frame and had it engraved, and then put in pictures of all the kids, spouses, grandkids.

Put a little message in the church bulletin board or local paper that you are giving her a card shower--She will hear from people young and old. We did this for my mil 90 birthday. She heard from old neighbors and students that she had taught. It was nice because when she tired of looking, she could pick up where she left of the day before Looking at her many cards.

The basket of things like stamps and writing paper is a very good idea. Also an address book that you can copy down names and addresses, phone numbers, etc. in BIG capital letters. I am sure that at her age, her eye sight isn't the best. Get some of those larger barrel pens that have a soft grip. Does she like crossword puzzles? Get one of the books with fairly easy puzzles. Even if she is capable of doing much more difficult ones, breezing through easy ones is fun.

I know you wanted to get her 80 of something, but I couldn't think of anything. (I do like the Bible verse idea.)

How about something from 1926? I did an ebay search and saw several items. I especially liked the Ladies Home Journal from 1926! She might get a kick out of seeing what women were talking about the year she was born.

I'm sending you an email. The item closes in 5 minutes!!!

You may not have enough time to carry this idea off for 80 replies, but worth a try. I decided to collect 50 8x10 glossies with autographed good wishes for my folks 50th. Was aiming for 50 but didn't make that goal. The surprise & enjoyment factor on a daily trip to their mailbox made it worthwhile. I put all responses in an album for their party. They received several - weeks & even months later. It was fun for them. At the time I believe I wrote to Betty White, Walter Cronkite, Pat Sajak & people I knew they watched on tv or in the movies.

My mom was born in May 1923. For her birthday this year, I went on Ebay and got an old magazine called "Beauty" ,the May 1923 issue. It happens to be in good condition, wasn't real expensive (under $20 even with shipping) the pages turn without being yellow and brittle,it has lots of pictures and ads of pretty ladies from the 20's, of course. The print is very small, even with my 53-year-old eyes I can't read it easily. But I think she'll enjoy turning the pages and looking at it.

80 pictures of people she knows/comes in contact with, 80 of them smiling normally, 80 of the same people making funny faces.

Write the white house and have a card sent to her from the President. My elderly relatives really got a kick out of that. I think it is sent when they turn 80 and when a couple have been married 50 years. We contacted every relative we had about a card shower for our Mom when she turned 80. She really enjoyed that and told her mailman she was sorry for the extra work it caused him. LOL

I recently stumbled upon one of the best gift ideas ever and it's perfect for those turning 60, 70 or 80! At that age, memories and kind words from loved ones are usually so much more appreciated than any material objects.

For my Mom's 60th Birthday I used "CelebrationJar.com" to create a unique gift for her. This website allows you to create a type of memory jar for a special person, but the best part is that the memories all come from their friends and family...not just you. So, I had my mom's dearest friends send in their favorite memories and stories of my mom from the many years they have known her. What a hit! My mom was blown away when she read all of the fabulous messages. Definitely, one of the very best gifts I've ever given! She will forever know how very loved and special she is to so many people.

My aunt had her 80th birthday, and although we were invited, all our branch of the family lives in CA and none of us could make it up there.

So my DH and I collected current family photos (including pets!) and we created a banner poster. I used Powerpoint software to create the headline of "Happy Birthday, Hana!" and a simple color shading, then placed the scanned photos as .JPGs across the banner.

We mailed it up to my cousin so she could 'unroll' it during the party, and it was a big hit!

Did your MIL have a close family with brothers and sisters? If so, what about different pics from different times in her life. Have copies made of the pics and take them to a studio, pick out the perfect frame and have a collage made. If her father was special to her, find a pic of just them together, or her mother and the rest of the family, her puppy or kitty or whatever.
Memories are special but they do tend to fade a bit as we age. This would bring them to life again.
Whatever you do, I know it'll be a special day for her.

I got my MIL a very large print bible for Christmas. Even with glasses her eyesight was pretty bad and she loved that she could read her scriptures again. I found an old family photo ( her deceased husband was in it) had it blown up to 8x10 and framed. She was thrilled with it cause she looked so skinny and he looked so handsome. She also LOVES anything that smells good. Maybe when the other senses start to falter, the smeller is the last to go? I don't know but she really loves anything that smells good. I also got her a journal to jot things down cause she is so afraid she will forget the important stuff about her life.

RE: 80th Birthday Gift ideas

I posted this request originally and thank everybody for their good ideas. My MIL has just had her 83rd birthday and I found the neatest little bunch of bright yello roses at WalMart yesterday. Also I have found that she just loves those little one serving cups of veggies and fruits that are sold in 3 or 6 packs. They are so convenient and there's a pretty good variety. Also she is losing weight and is glad to have smaller clothes, no more 24's for her, now she's in 16's! She's always been short, but NEVER less than a 16 since probably high school. She's one of those people that is fun to visit with...even tho she can hardly get around. She still has friends calling on the phone and sending her letters (the reverse of my cranky mom).

Thanks again for some good ideas!!!!

Have anyone ever composed or customized a song for your wife/girlfriend for their birthday or expressing your love for them? I came across this site recently and i was very interested in it. I want to buy a love song for my wife and i am asking for opinions in this. It is romantic in my opinion to do so. Anyone done it before? You can check out this site, www.my-song.ca

If you could get everyone together and share your thoughts, memories, and photos of your MIL I am sure it would be very heartfelt and unique.

Create something personalized and memorable for her, that has little monetary value but a lot of personal meaning and worth.

I did made a book at CelebrateAHero.com and invited my family and friends to join and add their wishes and photos of the person we were celebrating. They absolutely loved the gift, it was a big hit.

Celebrate A Hero gives you the option to download and print the book yourself or you can have them do the work for you and mail it to you doorstep.

I just had my 79th birthday and I tried to think what I might like to have for my 80th. I have to be honest and say that I really hope that everyone forgets how old I really am. I don't like to be reminded.

I know that not everyone feels the same way that I do, but I think that a goodly number would. Be sure that YOUR 80 years old really wants a big party, etc. before you plan it.

After realizing my mother Mildred didn't need any more "stuff" or clutter in her life, I decided to try and give her a gift of recorded messages from her family and friends.

The problem is that my mother recently moved away from many of her long-time friends, so I couldn't easily travel to their homes to make the recordings. So, to get the recordings I sent all my mother's friends and family an email asking them to call a toll-free number and record their favorite story involving them and my mother. I got the number for a fixed price from a company called LifeOnRecord. They took the recordings and made a CD.

People told stories on the CD of how Mildred had inspired them and how much Mildred meant to them.

We laughed at the stories, we cried, and it was a terrific celebration of who she is.

RE: 80th Birthday Gift ideas

My mom's 80th is coming up. We are getting her a massage chair (her request). Also I found a sort of "reverse baby book" -- for an adult daughter to fill out about her childhood with her mom. Each page has a thought to complete, like "I always thought you were so glamorous when ..." "My favorite place to play was ..." "I'm glad I listened to you when ..." and some pages are for pictures.

I think most of us like things like this best. When I turned 50, my husband got everyone he could think of to write a memory of me, and he put them in a pretty album. I treasure it. We did something like that many years ago for my parents' 40th anniversary; it sure is easier in the internet age.

My dad had Alzheimer's, so in the year or two gifts were a real challenge -- he really couldn't understand the idea of a gift anymore, but I wanted something that would give him pleasure. I came up with two good ones: for their 50th anniversary, the fruit of the month club -- they could both enjoy that -- and for his 75th birthday, when he could no longer chew solid food, a good blender.
