Breezy the dog next door

I moved here almost 2 years ago, and for that long I've been having trouble with the dog next door. I have told him repeatedly to please keep him quiet. But night time comes and he's barking alllllllllllll night long.. My husband was working in a hospital. He was given a warning that if his work didn't pick up that he would be canned.. How could he sleep listening to a dog bark all night..

Well, fast forward to today, I thought it was on account of that dog that he got fired cause he was working nights and couldn't sleep, he just couldn't do the work and got canned, but who wants to hear a dog barking ALL NIGHT LONG!!!

I had repeated talks with this guy about his dog about keeping the dog quiet, he told me he would, now the dog is still barking..

I saw him the other day, Saturday I think it was, and he was about to mow his lawn, mom was sleeping and I had to make my mad dash out the door.. But I killed some time I had to talk to him about that dog!!

He gave me some kind of story that someone tried to get into his house, while his wife and kids were home and he was at work. The dog barked and scared them away, YEAH RIGHT!! Tell me another one.. You have had that dog back there for almost 2 years that I'm living here. Your supposed to tell the HOA if ya having trouble with breakins, I don't wanna hear that story...

I told him, listen, and I started to cry, (really) my mom has gotten very sick since I moved in here, she's on oxygen now and she's got to have my FULL attention. If I'm not on the ball when I care for her something could go wrong and she could die.. I don't want her to die.. :( God willing she's going to be 86 years old this Sept...

Please, do something about that dog!!! He said ok.. He asked me if he could mow his side of the house, I said sure, do my side and ya got a deal. (I WAS KIDDING) I guess he doesn't know me yet.. He mowed my side.. Weed wacked it too.. I said to him I was kidding.. He said, I made him feel bad..

Good.. Then the tears worked :) I haven't heard that damn dog since.. At night anyway..

Hi, Sounds like you're getting to know your neighbor & that he does have a heart. The stress in our lives as caregivers gets to be so much at times that getting the rest we need is a lifesaver. Hope your relationship with the neighbor continues to be positive.

Hi Elle... Hopefully this is a turning point in your relationship with the neighbor and his understanding of the need for everyone to be able to sleep at night. Sad about your hubby losing his job. Has he been able to get a daytime job??? It sounds like you have your hands full with your precious mother. I imagine she's becoming quite frail at 86... My mother went home to be with the Lord when she was 97. I can remember well the emotional ups and downs as her condition worsened... God was FAITHFUL and gave us strength for each day. This is what I would do... Start out by getting the dog to accept you. When you are out in the back yard and the dog comes to the fence, try this; go up near the fence (5 feet or so) and stand with your side to the dog, or your back, and become a statue. Make sure your stance is powerful but calm (think, Queen Elizabeth). Do not speak to him and do not look him in the eye, at least not directly, and definitely do not give him a treat. After a few minutes, he should go into sniffing mode. This is exactly what you want. Once he does this, slowly walk back into your yard and continue your yard work. Do this several times while you are outside gardening. As he gets less fearful, move closer to the fence until you are right next to him. Once he accepts your presence at the fence without growling you should squat/sit down near the fence and allow him to sniff your hand through the chain link. Do not stick fingers through, just let him smell the back of your hand through the fence. If he is trained, you can give him some basic commands, "sit", "down". If he obeys you, you can give him a treat or tell him, "good boy". I would not give him a treat just for being quiet, so if he is untrained, just skip this step. The idea here is for the neighbor's dog to respect you as a pack leader. Once he is giving you respect, let your dogs out one at a time, on a leash, to meet the new dog. Repeat the same exercise you did solo, but with your dog at your side. Once he has accepted both dogs individually, bring them both out on leash; if all is well, unleash them. Do not let them play fence lords with the neighbor's dog as this sort of play can cause aggression to rear its ugly head again. Until you get this settled, see if you can work out a schedule with the neighbor so that your dogs and his dog are not outside at the same time. I hope this helps give you some ideas of what to try.

That's too funny housefairy. My BC Bo has to have somewhere to put the ball, too. For some reason he likes to put the ball on his bed, on a blanket, on the mat by the front door (whichever is closest to me.) Does not like to put it on the ground near me or it might "get away". I'll try the low box and wine thing next. My life has been much easier with the chuck-it - he doesn't beg, he just crouches, stares at the ball, glances at me, stares at the ball, glances at me with the stereotypical BC focus until I give in. I can tell him "leave it" and he'll go lie down, but still keep his eyes on the ball :) I have to physically put it away to end the "game". Luckily Bo has an "off" switch. (Something I made sure of before I adopted him) Those BC's without one really need an incredible amount of activity. Hang in there, it's really great your son has a safe place to leave him while he's gone.

I recently solved a problem with a guy and his barking dog that would wake me up at 5:00 am EVERY morning for a few weeks. One night my wife and I came home from work and I noticed he was moving around in his kitchen. I walked up to his back door and knocked on it. He about crapped his pants and then walked over. In a calm voice, this part was not easy due to the amount of sleep and frustration I delt with for so long, and politly explained that his dog kept waking me and my wife up at 5:00 am every morning. He appologized and said he would make it stop. Well it has been two weeks and no more barking dog! He still owns the dog, but he now waits by the door while it makes its deposits in the yard. My condo is up for sale now, but I plan on going back over there to thank him. I would try the option of approching the person first. I know I got lucky but you never know. Another solution I thought about while I was in bed awake at 5:00 am, before I had my talk with him, was to find his phone number and call him every morning at 3:00 am. :-)

LOL to you, Lavender! I found 1-800-BROWNIE instead. Leftovers from baking Sunday. The vet called this morning to say Archie's kidneys are in full failure and he's anemic with some other problems. We're going to try some at-home IV's for a couple of days to see if we can perk him up for a a few days or maybe even a week. The vet said it probably won't help at this point, but I have to try. I want his last days with me to be comfortable and full of as much love as I can give him. Thanks for your kind thoughts towards him. He has been my child for 18 years, long before I was finally able to have my own human ones. He follows me around like a dog and wants to be with me all the time. We're bonded like I've never been with an animal. This hurts! :( The insulation contractor called and scheduled install for Friday, the soonest they could do it. My guess now is that we'll be in mid-September. Little DS will have to start kindergarten before we move back. Oh, and my hood was delivered this morning! It's still crated so I didn't get to see it. If I can get DH to uncrate it tonight, I'll take a picture. Thanks guys!

My husband is looking but not finding daytime work.. :(

My mom is anything but frail, I weigh her every morning to make sure she's not gaining weight, she's been up and down.. Right now she's at 213 pounds.. Yep, she's 85 years old.. Remember though, she had colon cancer surgery before we moved, she uses that as every excuse as to why she can't move.. Oh, also, she fell the night before we moved. She's got a torn rotater cuff on her right shoulder.. So, yes I do more then my share around here..

I have to brush her hair everyday cause she can't lift her arm over her head..

It's the good thing we never had kids, just the husband and the dog and the mom is more then enough for me right now, and I'm no youngster anymore either..
