Would you or Wouldn't you?

One of the TV news problems last night had a report on the new advances in detecting those people that are prone to have Alzheimers ahead of time. I have a family history of AD and I think I would like to know so that my family and I would know what to watch for and what to do to enable me to function better. In some ways I think it would ease my mind to know that, Yes, it's going to happen, rather than wondering if it will. What is your feeling about it? Would you want to know or not?

Good question and I dont know my answer. My kids are getting it (both my and their father's families have a high incidents of ad) from both sides of our family and Im not sitting in such a good place either! I dont know what I will do.

I would. Early intervention can significantly add to the good years and may even delay the onset of the disease.

I am curious, however, how they will be able to determine who will contract AlzheimerÂs when scientists are still trying to determine the nature of the disease and what causes it. Seems like theyÂd have to know what it is to determine whoÂs going to catch it.

Not much learning curve. You'll love the convection once you have a chance to use it. You can lessen the time it takes something to bake/roast by 25%. Preheat with convection always, even if you aren't using it to bake something like a delicate cake. (My oven preheats using convection in 12-15 minutes, depending on how high I need it to be.) Don't use convection if you're baking bacon, or your oven is dirty when you want to high heat roast. It's not true that everything bakes more evenly. You still have to check and turn your sheet pans for even baking/roasting, depending on where they are positioned in your oven. Go for it. You may decide you don't like stainless after having to clean the front of it for a while, and this would be the thing to try it on. It will still blend in with the rest of your kitchen. I suspect you're gonna LOVE the oven, once you get acquainted with it!

A mitzvah...guess that's what I did. And if they come this way again...I will do the same thing again. But this time I will expect the rather ungracious behavior. These people are not day laborers... at least 2 of them have responsible jobs where they deal with other people, they are 2 of them over 50 and one very near that, so the excuse of "their mother never taught them" doesn't hold water. They were kind, language was good, English wasn't too bad they said they loved the meal and how nice it was of me to feed them when they were planning on taking me out....but just don't know that a note after a meal is nice. Even my very good friends who I feel comfortable saying.."I made a pot of soup...come on over and help me eat it"...will send a thank you email. But It amuses me becausew hen they first contacted me...I sent a copy of the email to my kids, saying "Guess who emailed me!" and they both replied you're NOT going to have them spend the night are you??? And later...."why not just meet then somewhere for coffee or a glass of wine." They took pictures which they promised tos end to me....maybe they're waiting to have the film processed....wink wink! And I am pretty sure that if I were in their neighbor hood they would welcome me and treat me the best they know how....and not expect me to write a thank you note. Well...it has been said if you don't want to be a door mat, don't lie down on the floor But I guess everyone has to do door mat duty now and then. And I did it fairly willingly....so I'll shut up now!!LOL! Linda C

guaralady, The Quilts of Valor Foundation accepts both "quilt-toppers" and "long-armers". They bring together people who wish to make a quilt top with those who have the ability to machine quilt quickly (NOT cheaply!). You are making a wonderful quilt top. You don't need to quilt it if this is not your talent or desire. The QoV Foundation will provide you with a long-arm quilter, if you wish. You mail it and the quilter will quilt it, and then send it back to you for binding and a label. You should name the quilter on the label, of course. Many of the long-arm quilters that provide their services to this cause have won awards at major quilting shows, so don't be worried about how your top will be treated. If you go this route, it is truly a joint effort. Just go to the website, and they will hook you up with someone willing to do the quilting. You do need to pay attention to what the long-armer wants in the way of backing fabric. Backings are bigger than the quilt tops! We do need our margins, LOL. Mary

Here's something to keep in mind. When you counter offered they didn't come back with anything. If I were the potential buyer and really interested in your house I would have come back with something between your counter offer and what I had offered, unless I was at the maximum offer I was willing to go. Having sold a house in the past six months and understanding the reality of trying to sell I would take the 228k without any hesitation. If this doesn't work out in 6 months you'll really wish you had too. Keep in mind housing prices are due to drop up to another 11 percent in the next couple of years. I'm not sure. My mother had AD, and it was awful watching her decline. What a terrible way for a kind, decent, intelligent life to end, to forget and be forgotten. I think if i knew I would have it, I'd probably take an early death.

I don't normally look at this forum, but felt compelled to respond. Absolutely YES I'd want to know- just the same as if it were cancer, diabetes- any major disease. This is, to me, one situation where ignorance is not bliss. My mother had it (AD), as well as a host of other diseases and health issues. She turned into an absolutely unbearable person, and that was hard on my dad - who suffered a massive stroke after several years of being her 24-hour a day caregiver (he refused any outside help, and it nearly cost him his life). I will always love her, but personally, if I'M the one deteriorating, I want to know so I (and my family) can plan ahead. Frankly, I can't see why anyone would NOT want to know they have this life altering disease - knowledge is power - power to plan, power to lessen the effects on your loved ones, and yourself.
