Tell Us About Your Rocking Chair
Comments (17)We have had recliners that rocked for years, a regular "2 x 4" type set of furniture that had a couch, chair and rocker, in the early 80's, and the maple rocker my parents bought us when I was pregnant with DD. I still have recliner rockers and the maple rocker. I have inherited a rocker from an aunt who got it from a great aunt. We don't know, and uncle (late husband to the aunt) didn't know, when they cleaned out great aunt's house, if it had belonged to our side of the family or great uncle's side. But it is a family piece and will be kept. No one is allowed to sit in it, as it isn't in very good shape, but still treasured. Even Damien isn't allowed to sit in it. It would probably hold him fine, but he wiggles too much!!! Tami...See MoreMy dog is a ROCK eater!!
Comments (13)This should not be too hard, but you need to supervise your dog while it is near the gravel for a bit. Bring a couple of toys with you, when you tell her NO, Leave it, just do it in a firm deepest voice you have, you dont need to yell (dogs have great hearing) when she looks at you, show her the toy/stuff animal/empty kong whatever it is (no food) and give her a command in a high sqeeky fun voice to play with the toy - toss the toy away from the gravel or just hold it, and and constantly talk to her in the high voice. You might have to be patient and do this awile. Ths idea is to replace what you dont want her to play with, with something you do. Remeber puppys learn the world through their mouths, we do when we are little, but once stuff starts tasting bad, and mom comes down on us too many times, we learn to use our hands more. Your puppy will naturally explore with its mouth. Since it has a propensity to pick up things it is not suppose to, keep a sharp eye out during walks. Especially on garbage day.I brought a tiny travel sized toothpaste with me to put a tiny amount on my dogs tongue to keephim from picking up anything he isnt suppose to. We had a dog poisoned while growing up and I never want to deal with that again. Most dogs hate the taste of toothpaste, some like it, use tobasco sauce if the toothpaste does not work. Now some people have come down on me for using toothpaste saying you are not suppose to swallow it. I would rather dose my dogs four times with toothpaste then have to spend it life worry about it picking up someting toxic. Good luck...See MoreLooking for rocking chair for nursery
Comments (28)Just wanted to let all of you know their decision. We tried out all kinds. She liked a lot of them, but they both liked the Joya best for their room. The size and style fits them and it is a little firmer than many of the others which she liked as well. They are getting it in navy. Mtn, in re your comment about the child's rocker, there was one chair at Crate and Barrel that she tried out and her feet did not touch the floor. She looked liked Lily Tomlin as Edith Ann. I thought of you! Ha. So, thank you all for your ideas, suggestions, and kind words. It gave the search some direction, so she wasn't overwhelmed with way too many possibilities-they all seem to blur into a mishmash after a while, don't they? It was also such fun to read all your posts. What a generous group you all are!...See MoreTrying to make a perennial rock garden.Do I really need to amend soil?
Comments (23)The vast majority of reading I have done recommends either a no-dig amendment method or tilling/digging and amending to about 10-12 inches. I looked through all my garden books and can't find anything recommending digging to three feet of depth! My soil has some clay content, so when I have built a new bed, I have generally chosen to hand dig and mix in my favorite bagged compost to improve the soil. The one time I rented a tiller, I found it didn't work as well as my trusty shovel and hand mixing. (In fact, the perennials in that particular bed have been the slowest growing!) However, I then tried layering with cardboard and mulch last fall for yet another bed, and frankly, that bed has been an absolute delight - hardly any effort and the soil is lovely, well draining, and easy to plant in. I will definitely use no-dig methods if I have time to wait patiently for my next new bed! For a rock garden, with plants that need even better drainage, I understand why you might add gravel, grit, or sand along with the compost, but regardless of what you amend the soil with, I can't fathom digging to three feet - I have planted trees without digging that deep. I think, maybe, the guys that installed my deck might have buried the concrete supports that deep, but other than that, I can't think of a reason to disturb the soil to that level....See Moregwarstong
