:) I was a CNA right out of high school, and went from nursing home work to private duty because I couldn't deal with nursing home administrators who defined 'quality of life' by their own convenience rather than their client's previous lives. we also went through a run of aides, helpers, companions, and whatnot with my grandmother (7 strokes in 2 years, not much left of a dame made of spring steel by then) part of it is what your insurance is willing to work with/what you can afford. I've been in situations where a 16 year old foster kid with dreams of becoming a geriatric nurse was infinately preferrable over any trained aide we found...skills can be acquired, but the instinct for healing is just that, an instinct, and while that didn't last as long as we would have liked (she would have stayed with us past graduation, but her mom sobered up long enough to regain custody, and we had to give her up) the agency I worked for the longest was Bayada, but I don't know if they're national...but they took their job seriously, and expected us to take OUR job seriously... I loved the admin team, and they were totally willing to play to my talents, and steer me where I could do the most good. you might also want to ask your doctor- especially the older ones very often have a collection of folks who pay off their bills by 'doing for' other patients (which makes more sense to me that all the health insurance in the world)

We hired professional cleaning company to clean before we moved in. I was here while they cleaned to make sure everything was done to my standards. I'm a clean freak, so I have high standards. They had a special package for cleaning an empty house. In addition to the usual cleaning, they cleaned inside of all (empty) cabinets, inside all kitchen appliances. Had carpets that were staying downstairs professionally cleaned. All upstairs wall to wall carpet was replaced. DH is allergic to cats and the POs had a cat. Had entire inside of house painted (had to put clean on all the walls :-)). I think I just ran the dishwasher on hottest setting. DH cleaned the inside of the washing machine. I opened it and declared it had to be replaced immediately. It was just gross. He scrubbed it. I don't remember what he used, but after he was done it sparkled and I agreed to not replace it. Replace all toilet seats. A cheap and easy way to ensure it's clean! This was 14 years ago, I cannot think of anything else we did.

I did live-in health care back when I was in my 20's, I was a CNA and did not only do patient care but also light housekeeping, cooking and shopping. I worked for a private agency then.. the clients all paid out-of-pocket. Fast forward to a few years ago, my CNA liscense had expired but I took a job as a home health aide. Very, very different. I could not do any patient care.. only cleaning, laundry and shopping. During my training I was shocked to see that most of the aides did very little and spent most of the time visiting with the clients. One of my first days alone I cleaned a lady's refrigerator for over 2 hours. Things had been spilled in there I'm guessing several months earlier and although HHA's had been there 2 times every week.. no one cleaned it up. I also had clients that told me to go ahead and leave when I was done although my time wasn't up (so there is a lot of that going on). I only kept that job a couple weeks... it wasn't at all what I had expected. Good info Lisa!!

there is a plant propogation book i have wherein the author describes his own mist system. that author has a large black coil of hose in the roof of his greenhouse so that water can be heated before reaching the mist nozzles. that's at least one vote for using warm water and keeping the cuttings reasonably warm as they root. just thought i would toss that in! lol. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted by: mosaic z8 LA (My Page) on Sun, May 11, 03 at 11:59 With such a setup you could probably root roses under mist all winter here in Louisiana. I believe the idea behind the pattern was/is actually to help prevent water run-off when doing overhead watering by allowing the water to soak in between the on phases. I bought this particular timer though because when I looked at it my mind said "Ah! Mist!" (heh), even though the reason I bought it at the time was to keep a new patch of zoysia sod watered until it rooted in. My batteries did last all season last year, but it was only opening that valve 4x a day for 3 weeks, and then 1x every 4 days for a couple of months. And even though I had a pressure regulator on there, I kept having a problem with the heads blowing off! (Their drippers work perfectly by the way so it's nothing against the company) I ordered foggers from Misty Mate this year and they put out a super fine fog. Perfect for propagation. They are a litte more expensive than the ones from Dripworks but worth it. And if you ask they will ship the misting heads for $1.50. I went to HD and bought a 10-24 tap and drill set (3.00) and drilled holes in my 1/2" cvpvc and the heads just screwed right in! I bought a Melnor timer at HD for $39 and it has 1 minute spray options so I've got it set for 1 minute every 10 minutes. Can't remember the model number but it's not the one on the HD website. I hope to finish my new propagation box soon. I built one on a stand this year so I can move it around easily. Wouldn't you know, HD has plastic sheeting made just for greenhouses that I used! It's not the real thick heavy stuff either. It's only 4mil and is crystal clear see-thru! Hopefully I'll be finished this week!
