I would wait before I did textured wall...all I can think of is popcorn which is so often disliked. Instead if you want to do something permanent now, think about how you might use wood and a mantel and a surround or an overmantel to make the fireplace stand out. Stone, tile, etc. for the surround.

The gypsum wall panels look like waves. I can try and post a pic of it. It's stunning.

I recommend a smaller strip or rectangle, I have heard its hard to keep dusted and clean.

Hmm I didn't think of that. Good point! I'm trying to persuade him to wait to accent the wall until we decorate and at least have furniture.

You could always add a textured effect later with anaglypta. And it would be more removable if you decided you didn't like it.
