appropriate paint colors with shingles & siding

Hi -

Building a house that would probably be best described as shingle style. Don't have pictures of my elevation, but posting pics here that give a rough idea of the style. Will have both lap siding and shingles on the front of the house (basically, shingle on the gabled sections; would say front elevation will be about 1/3 shingles and 2/3 lap). I had been thinking of using the same body paint color on lap and shingles, but my builder seems to think two slightly different colors is a much better idea. I've reviewed lots of pictures found online & elsewhere and I've see it done both ways.

-Does having the contrasting colors make the house style lean a bit more to Craftsman? I am going for more of an Arts & Crafts/cottage/shingle style. Hope this makes sense.

- Would a contrasting color make it look a bit too busy? I am thinking a deep gray-taupe body color, off-white trim and a dark red front door. So adding another color would be a slightly lighter gray-taupe color.

Here's a picture of my house with shingles and planks:
We were going for the craftsman look as well and I was going to paint the front door, but decided to stain it---glad I did because it looks amazing, if I say so myself! Shingle color is BM Puritan Gray and the planks are BM Boothbay Gray. Plain white trim color. I don't have a picture with the stained door just yet.

I should have told you that only the gable above the copper roof on the front, and the gable on the left in the back had been painted Puritan Gray at the time I took these pictures. I need to go take some more pictures! It's been too darn cold!!

Thanks! Your house looks great. I've reviewed colors & inspiration pictures some more, and I am leaning to having the two slightly different colors. I was concerned about it looking too Craftsman vs. the more Nantucket-shingle-style appearance I was seeking, but I think the two colors is just a better look.

Thanks! I saw your post on the Building a home site, too!! I think 2 colors is the way to go! A Nantucket appearance will be amazing! I really want to visit there someday!
Good luck with your color choices! It's a fun but often painful decision!
