help me design this area (mud room)

I'm narrowing down our floor plan and would like some help laying out the mud room. The space is roughly 7'x24' and we would like washer/dryer, some built-ins and a closet.

If you can provide information on where each one of those doorways lead to, it'd be helpful to imagine the flow and make better suggestions.

The left side is the kitchen with the lower left being an office. The right is the garage, and the door on the bottom is the "non visitor" entry. I just put a door in the back for kicks.

Sounds like you'd like to have benches and storage right next to the garage entry into the mudroom en route to the kitchen (lower left).

If you can move W/D to the lower end of the short wall dividing the space and take out the exit door towards the backyard, then you could fit in a powder room in that upper portion of the room. In addition you might be able to squeeze in a closet for coats etc. along the long wall.

The garage doesn't look right, what little is shown. Since it is adjacent to the mud room, it's fair game for us.

There is considerable space to the left of the garage door. While four feet is nice, can you give one or two foot of that up to the mud room? It would help.

BTW, that partially shown 32' dimension line is a bit confusing, since at first glance it makes it look as if that part of the building is 32' deep.

Well, the garage is set at 24x24. That's what I have now, and wouldn't want to go any smaller really. I posted a larger view for you to get a better picture of the space. I'm open to any configuration even adjusting the current opening into the kitchen if that meant getting a larger pantry space.

Our mudroom is about the same width and a few feet shorter. Our garage door is where your private entrance is and our private entrance is where your garage door is. At the other end we have a powder room. We have a coat closet on the "right" wall. and are in the process of putting in a bench with shelves on the "left" wall. Between the closet and the door on the "right" wall is a space which will be our mail sorting station/message center. If I were you I would widen the mudroom by a few feet if you can. We discovered it was too narrow too late into the build. I think 10 feet wide works better. Our ceilings are 11 foot high so it appears more spacious than it would if we had standard height ceilings.

here are some pics(excuse the mess!)

The powder room is at the end of the hall. On the right is the closet and mail sorting station. We will be installing cabinets with a pullout for the shredder and trash can there.

As you can see, we could use a few more feet in width to make the passage to the powder room more spacious. In your case I think it would more important to have a wider passage as you will be hauling laundry baskets and hampers through there. I would also make sure that back door in the laundry area is wide enough to accommodate the washer and dryer in case you need to replace them in the future. If you widen the space as well you will have room for cabinets or a closet in the laundry room for extra storage.

Hope that helps!

RE: help me design this area (mud room)-another suggestion

Another thought... you may want to consider moving the closet in the kitchen up next to your cabinets and move your doorway to the mudroom from the kitchen down so it is directly opposite the door to the garage. It makes it easier when you are moving things from the garage into the house and gives you more uninterrupted wall space to use for your closet or built-ins.

Did a quick mock up for you. I did widen the mudroom to 9 feet to make it more spacious. I moved the pantry up to the cabs. It is almost 5 feet long. I moved the door down and I shortened the laundry room. I also added a utility sink and closet/cabs to the laundry. The built in bench is 6 feet long. The mail center is about 42". I would put cabinets w/pull out trash and paper recycling bins there. Also can put some drawers for mailing supplies as well. You can coordinate it's countertop with your kitchen if desired.

If you can't widen the room- then you can put a shorter closet and bench(48") on the right wall and move the laundry room doorway to the left and get rid of the cabs in the laundry and move the mail center to the corner between the garage and private doors (reversing the hinges on the doors)

HTH!
