I did it. You still wanna put something like BlueSeal around first, as the dimpled membrane isn't really for waterproofing per-say. It's more for keeping rocks and debris off your foundation waterproofing that would cause cuts or nicks, and to help protect the waterproofing when you backfill. Just make sure your backfiller is careful, because it's easy for the weight of the fill to rip the dimple right off the foundation wall.

So, is it even worth putting it? My builder put some black stuff all around the foundation.

Yes its a good practice but we often dont depending on the particular site. The more risky the site is for bulk water concerns the more important it is. I would probably include it on a block basement, even if the site seemed safe from water concerns.

It does much more than protect the damproofing during backfill. It creates a drainage matrix that can reduce hydrostatic pressure by letting accumulated water drop down to the exterior footing drain. The exterior footing drain and its details are probably more important but this product is a good form of redundancy. Another one is backfilling with permeable fill topped with a cap layer of less permeable fill that slopes away from the home.

Considering the damage and expense to repair a leaking basement, it could be the wisest investment you make for your home.

I think it is an awesome product because it drains water to the footing drains. My basement is in clay soil sitting on limestone rock so its challenging.
I have 4"EPS insulation with a dimpled membrane, footing drains and crushed concrete backfill. No other waterproofing. It is bone dry inside.
