Help! Beam issues

So tonight my husband was going over our plans and discovered something we missed prior to approval. We currently have one row of block with a poured basement floor at the site.

Apparently we have two beams running through our kitchen....with one of them a few inches in front of our cabinets. I'll post pics of the plan and the cutaway in the next post. In this pic, look for the two red circles in the kitchen. Any suggestions? Can this beam be moved? If not, how can we make it look right?

Just in case the engineer doesn't have a way to change it, could you.... Build a soffit around the beam and then put your cabinets beneath the soffit. Maybe even make the uppers the same depth as the base cabinets? I don't know. Sorry I'm not much help.

Jdez....you're on the same train of thought as my husband. He just came in and suggested the same thing. Not a perfect solution, but it will definitely be better than the beams! Thanks!

I would trim out the whole ceiling and make them look intentional

Michelle-we had the same thing - huge beam that supported the whole house - no moving it. I freaked. I honestly don't notice it now. Can you see it?

I thought I had a pic....hang on I'll snap one with my iphone and post another message.

Personally I love the soffit above the cabinets because it adds a pop of color right next to the white (or stain, whichever you choose). When white cabinets go to normal ceiling they meet what is usually white trim or white ceiling. So no POP. I'd soffit!

Michelle-just be sure you mention it and show it to your kd. He thought he could easily work around it and made sure the crown and cabinet heights were pretty close to covering the gap. He completely put my fears to rest. If I stand way back at the furthest point in the dining room I can see a teeny gap but it looks kind of like a shadow and I think it's more than fine. So in the pic I posted above that darker line above the crown up and to the left of the MW is my 'gap'. No biggie.

Just an FYI, we have 9' ceilings. And I thought that same exact thing - wahhhh, we have a BULK HEAD in a 2014 new build when everyone else is tearing them out. You can't be serious! Ugh! ;) Doesn't bother me in the slightest now.
