our exterior is hardee and according to our builder it was more expensive to install than brick would have been...

As noted, follow manufacturer's stated instructions. To do otherwise is to void any warranty and he's just trying to make you feel like an unreasonable ass when it's he who is not doing his job.

By pushing back with such a simple and correct response, you'll make it clear that it's his job to know and do things correctly.

If you haven't designed the wall system yet you can't blame the contractor for asking you to tell him what it is and how you want it installed.
