My upstairs hall will be carpet, but that's because there are only kids rooms up there and our stairs going up are carpeted. If the master were up and/or the stairs were wood, I would do wood floors.

I prefer carpet in bedrooms, but real estate agents will tell you to do hardwood.

so we have carpet in the bedrooms in the new house
our previous home had hardwoods everywhere (porcelain in bath, kitchen and utility) and i liked that for cleaning (i could actually see how clean it was vs assuming the vacuum is picking everything up)
the look of carpet doesn't bother me and we have not pets or children at home....

Some of the happiest days of my life were the ones on which I got to pull out stinky, dust mite (and god knows what else) laden carpet and replace it with hardwood floors. Give me carpets that can be rolled up and sent out for actual effective cleaning any day.

The preference is regional too. People who live in the north view carpet more favorably than people who live in the south. I think that carpet does get stinky in the south due to heat and humidity, and that isn't much of a problem in the north. Beyond that, I prefer carpet on the second floor because of noise--you will hear people walking upstairs more with HW than carpet. Also, if your kids' bedrooms are upstairs, the carpet will help deaden the sound of music, etc.

Thanks everyone for your input! I think we will go with carpet for noise and cost reasons. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something that is "out of style".

Numbers, you might very well NEED to do carpet too, since it is all connected to stairs, and there are step rise considerations... You can't just change the flooring on the last "step" (floor).

I like carpet in the sleeping spaces. So, I think your choice is fine!
