Retractable Screen on Casement Window

I just came from the Pella Window showroom and wanted to share information on their option for a retractable screen on casement windows. We are going to use this option for the casements we will be installing. The screen actually rolls up into a box mounted at the top of the window. The box is hidden behind trim that can be painted or stained just like the rest of the window. The track that the screen rolls on is actually recessed into the window, so there isn't a metal screen frame visible either. The price is about $75 for their largest windows and smaller windows are less (not sure the exact price). The salesman said the retractable screen is about the same price as installing their "invisible screen" product. Hope this helps others that are in the "window-ordering" stage like we are!

I have to ask why you'd want a retractable screen on a window?

Not being snarky; I genuinely don't know. Does it make it easier, say, in winter or something?

I think the concern is that screens block the view, so if they are out of the way when the window is closed, it looks better.

Since many people install casements in hard-to-reach spots like over the sink, I question why the screen stores at the TOP of the window and not somewhere easier to reach, like the side?

jasonmi7: on a casement window, the screens are actually on the inside of the house. With the retractable option, you don't have to look at screens all the time when your windows are shut (which is the majority of the time). Maybe it's just a personal preference, but I've never had casement windows, so having screens on the inside is a bit odd to me - so I'm very excited about the retractable option!

the retractable screen option is definitely worth a look but i've read far too many complaints against pella. i don't have any personal experience with them, but jeld wen also makes windows and doors with retractable screens.
